Mets listed as trade deadline winner after several blockbuster moves

The New York Mets enter the month of August leading the National League East by a half-game over the Philadelphia Phillies. They made several key moves at the trade deadline to boost their chances of a postseason run. The Mets were busy in upgrading their bullpen, landing Tyler Rogers, Ryan Helsley and Gregory Soto. They also acquired Cedric Mullins to boost their outfield. The rest of the season looks promising for New York as they try to maintain their lead in the NL East over the Phillies. They'll hope for a deeper run after their NLCS loss last October. Will Leitch of listed six winners of the trade deadline, and the Mets were among them. "The Mets, for all their talent and all that payroll, had clear holes: The bullpen, center field, the back of the rotation. They didn't help out the rotation much, but they took care of the other two quite nicely," Leitch wrote. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp The Mets were certainly very busy at the deadline this year. Their biggest moves were the ones they made to beef up the bullpen. They now have three high-leverage arms that can serve in the closer's role if need be and also have a strong set up option in Soto. They certainly have built a roster capable of winning a World Series title. Mullins should help them out in center field as well. The NL East will be a tight race down the stretch. It will certainly be interesting to see if the Mets can pull away from the rest of the pack in the division and potentially even secure home field advantage through the playoffs. More MLB:

Padres Shock National League, Claim Best Record in Post-Deadline Playoff Predictions

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The trade deadline has officially passed, and teams are gearing up for the final two months of the regular season plus the playoffs. With moves made and rosters bolstered, it's time to predict how the postseason picture will look when October rolls around. Exact records will not be predicted, but instead it will just be the top six teams in National League with their positions in the playoff picture. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 21: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on July 21, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 21: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on July 21, 2025 in Arlington, Winners: 1. San Diego Padres -- N.L. West Key Additions: RP Mason Miller, INF Ryan O'Hearn, SP Nestor Cortes The Padres had one of the best trade deadlines by shocking the baseball world with grabbing Miller from the Athletics. A.J. Preller did a tremendous job of adding to an already talented roster while holding onto Robert Suárez and Dylan Cease. San Diego could easily steal the division away from the Dodgers. 2. New York Mets -- N.L. East Key Additions: RP Tyler Rogers, RP Ryan Helsley, OF Cedric Mullins The Mets had two big needs heading into the deadline: relievers and a center fielder. They got both and two of the best relievers on the market. With a back-end trio of Rogers, Helsley and Edwin Diaz, the Mets are well on their way to winning the division this season. 3. Chicago Cubs -- N.L. Central Key Additions: RP Taylor Rogers, INF Willi Castro The Cubs ideally should've added a starting pitcher at the trade deadline, but they couldn't get the deal done. In the meantime, Castro's versatility will help the organization in the short term and long term. He can slot in at third for now and then anywhere in the infield minus first base if Matt Shaw finds his stride. Wild Card 1: Los Angeles Dodgers -- N.L. West Key Additions: RP Brock Stewart, OF Alex Call The Dodgers did just enough to get by at the deadline as they did not want to overpay for players. Bringing in Stewart will help solidify the bullpen while Call's production can lead to him taking Michael Conforto's spot in left field. However, Los Angeles did far from enough to win the division. Wild Card 2: Philadelphia Phillies -- N.L. East Key Additions: RP Jhoan Duran, OF Harrison Bader Just like the Mets, the Phillies needed bullpen and outfield help. Duran is their big prize as he was arguably the best reliever available. Dave Dombrowski did well there to get him. Bader will be an upgrade over Max Kepler, but it still may not be enough to complement Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Wild Card 3: Milwaukee Brewers -- N.L. Central Key Additions: RP Shelby Miller, SP Jordan Montgomery The Brewers are going to rely on much of their current team to get into the playoffs. Miller will help in the bullpen, and Montgomery can be utilized as needed. Getting Brandon Woodruff back recently is almost like an internal addition, but the organization did just enough to secure a playoff berth. BALTIMORE, MD - JULY 29: Seranthony Dominguez #48 of the Toronto Blue Jays pitches against the Baltimore Orioles during the seventh inning in game two of a split doubleheader at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on July 29, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland. MoreDivision Winners: 1. Toronto Blue Jays -- A.L. East Key Additions: RP Seranthony Domínguez, SP Shane Bieber, INF Ty France The Blue Jays have one of the hottest lineups in baseball right now led by Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Adding to the pitching staff was the biggest need for Toronto to continue its own path, and the organization did just that. As long as the Blue Jays avoid a multi-week slump, they can easily finish with the best record in the American League. 2. Houston Astros -- A.L. West Key Additions: INF Carlos Correa, INF Ramón Urías, OF Jesús Sánchez The Astros knew they needed to bring in bats at the trade deadline, and that's exactly what they did. They brought back Correa as well as added two additional hitters. Had they managed to get the deal finalized for Dylan Cease, they would've been at the top of the A.L. If their pitching can get healthy quickly, they could very easily challenge the Blue Jays. 3. Detroit Tigers -- A.L. Central Key Additions: RP Kyle Finnegan, SP Chris Paddack, SP Charlie Morton The Tigers needed pitching, and they got a lot of it with the highlight being closer Kyle Finnegan. Detroit knew it needed a shutdown reliever to have any chance of success. Outside of the three names mentioned, none of the acquisitions move the needle much, resulting in a third place finish for the Tigers. Wild Card 1: Seattle Mariners -- A.L. West Key Additions: INF Josh Naylor, INF Eugenio Suárez, RP Caleb Ferguson Seattle grabbed two of the best bats on the market at the deadline in two separate deals, and very few teams had a better deadline than the Mariners. This was a pitching-heavy roster, and Jerry Dipoto went out and got strong bats. If the lineup gets hot, the Mariners could challenge the Astros for the A.L. West crown. Wild Card 2: New York Yankees -- A.L. East Key Additions: RP David Bednar, INF Ryan McMahon, RP Camilo Doval This is the first year the Yankees had multiple needs at the trade deadline, and the Bronx Bombers brought in multiple relievers. However, they took the quantity over quality approach aside from David Bednar, and it's tough to be sold on McMahon over at third base. The glove plays well, but the bat is questionable. Wild Card 3: Boston Red Sox -- A.L. East Key Additions: SP Dustin May, LHP Steven Matz The Red Sox sneak into the playoffs in this scenario for one reason and one reason only: starting pitching. A front three of Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello and Dustin May will put the team in position to win almost every time they take the hill. As a result, Boston will secure the final wildcard spot within the final days of the regular season. More MLB: Astros Reportedly Continue Push for All-Star Infielder Carlos Correa
