
STEM Dreams Cut Short: 59 percent Girls Blame Financial Barriers
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], April 29: A new report, Unlocking Potential: Financial Aid as a Catalyst for Girls' STEM Success, reveals that 59% of girls cite financial constraints as the primary reason for not pursuing STEM education beyond secondary school. The study conducted by Sattva Consulting in collaboration with AISECT, highlights how the high cost of science education, limited scholarship accessibility, and lack of female role models prevent millions of girls in India from entering STEM fields.
The study employed a mixed-methods research approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to understand the financial barriers preventing girls from pursuing STEM education. A total of 4,763 girls from government schools across four states--Rajasthan, Punjab, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh were surveyed for the study. In addition to student surveys, the research incorporated interviews with teachers, parents, school principals, STEM experts, and policymakers to assess the broader systemic challenges.
Despite 80% of future jobs requiring STEM skills, only 39% of girls graduate from higher secondary education in science disciplines. The report highlights stark regional disparities, with over 60% of girls in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh opting for STEM subjects, while in states like Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jharkhand, participation remains critically low at less than 25%. Owing to the low percentage of girls passing grade 12th in science streams, these states were chosen as the study area, with Madhya Pradesh being the only outlier despite being in a similar geography.
Siddharth Chaturvedi, Director of AISECT, emphasised the importance of addressing these challenges. "We commissioned this report to better understand the systemic barriers preventing girls from entering STEM fields. While discussions around gender equality in education have gained momentum, financial constraints remain an overlooked challenge. By identifying key gaps, we hope this report will drive meaningful interventions that ensure STEM education is accessible for all girls."
The study also highlights the significant gap in scholarship utilization. While Rs. 651.9 crores were allocated across 143 scholarship schemes in 2023-24, 55% of funds remain unspent due to low awareness, complex application processes, and eligibility criteria that exclude economically marginalized students.
The report challenges the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to financial aid and introduces a persona-driven model that maps financial needs to girls' competencies and aspirations. It identifies four distinct beneficiary profiles--Trailblazers, Sustainers, Aspirers, and Disengaged--each requiring tailored financial interventions. High-potential Trailblazers need sustained support to pursue STEM degrees, while Aspirers may benefit more from vocational pathways aligned with STEM careers. Based on this framework, the financial investment required ranges from Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 1,50,000 per girl per year, depending on the pathway and persona. Through this approach, the study makes a case for result-based funding where the financial support is cognizant of the financial needs of different kinds of students.
Additionally, the lack of female role models in STEM further exacerbates the issue, with only 13% of the surveyed schools having female science teachers. Beyond financial aid, the report points to the absence of structured career guidance and vocational pathways for girls to enter the STEM workforce. Many students are unaware of alternative STEM careers beyond engineering and medicine, limiting their aspirations. Without targeted interventions, these barriers will continue to deter young women from pursuing science education and careers.
Dr. Shweta Gaur, Principal Researcher at Sattva Consulting, stressed the need for systemic reform to support girls in STEM. "STEM education is not just about tuition fees. The financial burden extends to coaching, study materials, lab access, and even transport, making it an unattainable goal for many. If we want to bridge the gender gap in STEM, we need solutions that go beyond scholarships. Schools, policymakers, and the private sector must work together to provide sustained financial aid with a long-term commitment, accessible career guidance, and mentorship programs that keep girls engaged in science education."
Rathish Balakrishnan, Co-founder & Partner at Sattva Consulting, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a shift in financial aid structures. "The solution lies in rethinking the design of financial aid for girls. Funders need to double down on their efforts in the needy states, be patient funders, and invest in girls based on their needs and provide targeted, result-based funding, enabling girls to enter the STEM workforce. He also emphasised the use of technology to scale the reach of the financial support.
The report urges state and national education policymakers to reassess financial aid structures and increase awareness of existing scholarships. It also highlights the role of CSR and philanthropic organizations in bridging the gap through long-term investments in vocational STEM pathways, digital skilling initiatives, and teacher training programs.

Delhi to conduct cloud seeding trials in September to curb air pollution
Delhi will witness its first cloud-seeding trial in the first two weeks of September in a bid to trigger artificial rain and reduce air pollution levels, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on trials, earlier planned for early July, were postponed after inputs from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), IIT-Kanpur, and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, indicated that weather conditions in July were not conducive for effective revised window was chosen to coincide with the retreating monsoon, which offers more suitable cloud conditions. The Delhi government has allocated Rs 3.21 crore for this pilot project, which is being led by the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted operational clearance for the trials. The aircraft has been equipped with cloud-seeding instrumentation, and its crew holds all the required licenses and clarified that the aircraft will avoid prohibited areas and no aerial photography will be conducted during the operation in strict adherence to aviation safety norms."We have taken all the necessary permissions, and the aircraft is fully ready. The cloud seeding will now take place in the first and second weeks of September," the minister said, adding that "the instrumentation work on the aircraft has been completed by IIT-Kanpur, and we are fully prepared."The trials, which will be conducted using a Cessna 206-H aircraft (VT-IIT), will consist of five sorties over pollution-prone regions in north Delhi, including Rohini, Bawana, Alipur and Burari, as well as parts of adjoining Uttar Pradesh, such as Loni and the sorties, the aircraft will fly below the cloud base and release hygroscopic particles - such as sodium chloride and other aerosols - into the clouds to stimulate precipitation. This weather modification technique is aimed at inducing artificial rain that could help wash out airborne pollutants.'This is a scientific intervention to combat air pollution. Opinion: India's Space Odyssey Under PM Narendra Modi
Last Updated: India's space missions symbolise our determination to push boundaries and be at the forefront of space exploration India's space programme achieved a historic milestone with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's participation in Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), marking a significant step in the nation's human spaceflight journey. Shukla, a 39-year-old Indian Air Force (IAF) test pilot, became the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) and the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma. This achievement, 41 years after Sharma's flight, underscores India's growing prowess in space exploration and its strategic use of international partnerships to advance its ambitions, under the aegis of the Modi government. Selected as one of the four astronauts for ISRO's Gaganyaan mission, India's first indigenous human spaceflight programme, Shukla underwent rigorous training at Russia's Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. During his 18-day stay on the ISS, Shukla conducted over 60 scientific experiments, including seven designated by ISRO. A key experiment, Myogenesis, conducted at the Life Sciences Glovebox, explored skeletal muscle degradation in microgravity, aiming to develop therapies for astronauts and patients with muscle-degenerative diseases on Earth. These experiments will bolster India's microgravity research ecosystem, enhancing its scientific capabilities. Shukla also engaged in public outreach, including a live videoconference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ham radio sessions with students, inspiring the next generation to pursue STEM fields. For India, Ax-4 was a strategic step toward the Gaganyaan mission, scheduled for 2027, which aims to send Indian astronauts into low Earth orbit using indigenous technology. The Ax-4 mission, costing approximately Rs 548 crore, solidified India's position as an emerging space power, inspiring millions and paving the way for future endeavors, including a planned space station by 2035 and a lunar mission by 2040. Remember, even before the Axiom mission, India witnessed history being created on August 23, 2023, as part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. With the soft landing on the lunar south pole, on the dark side of the moon, India became the 1st country to land on the lunar south pole and only the 4th country in the world, after the United States, Russia, and China, to have achieved the magnificent feat of landing on the moon. India's Space economy is expected to be worth over $13 billion by 2025, endorsing PM Modi's ambitious Space-oriented plans. The Chandrayaan-2 mission cost India Rs 978 crore. But the Chandrayaan-3 project cost was much lower at Rs 615 crore. Again, India's first solar mission, Aditya-L1, came at a cost of merely Rs 378 crore, to study the photosphere, chromosphere, and the outermost layers of the Sun (the corona). In 2017, ISRO launched a record 104 satellites aboard PSLV-C37 from Sriharikota, of which 101 belonged to international customers, signifying India's increasing presence in the global Space industry. There was a time when India was denied cryogenic rocket technology. But the scientists of India not only developed indigenous technology but today with its help, dozens of satellites are being sent to Space simultaneously. Space, the final frontier, has captivated our imagination since time immemorial. The call of the cosmos and the curiosity to know more about our origin, is the driving force for Space explorations. But venturing into Space is costly and dangerous. India's Chandrayaan-2 mission encountered a setback in 2019 when the lander Vikram failed to achieve a soft landing on the moon's surface. However, from this failure, India learned valuable lessons. PM Modi did not flinch even for a moment and like a true leader, he stood in solidarity with India's scientific community. The Chandrayaan-2 mission served as a catalyst for innovation, prompting the scientific community to analyse and rectify the challenges faced. In fact, it is the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2 which has been providing key inputs in real-time, to help its successor Chandrayaan-3 which eventually made a flawless landing on the moon on August 23, 2023. Indian Space forays under the Modi government are helping in sectors such as agriculture, railways, smart cities, water-mapping, robotic surgery and defence. PM Modi's unwavering support for ISRO and his endorsement of cost-effective Space missions aligns with the nation's ethos of frugality, allowing India to achieve remarkable feats without burdening its economy. Moreover, Modi's emphasis on the practical applications of Space technology in agriculture, disaster management and national security underscore his commitment to harnessing Space capabilities for the betterment of Indian society. India's space missions symbolise our determination to push boundaries and be at the forefront of space exploration. ISRO operates on a modest budget; the Mars orbiter, Mangalyaan, for example, had a price tag of just $75 million, less than the cost of an average Hollywood blockbuster like say Interstellar which had a far higher budget of $165 million. As India continues its journey into the unknown, exploring the moon and beyond, it inspires and instills hope for a brighter future. Well, India's tryst with the dark side of the moon showcases how a leap of faith is sometimes, all that it takes to leapfrog a million years ahead. India has launched about 557 satellites, including 431 foreign satellites for 34 countries as of July 30, 2023, primarily through ISRO's commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), formerly Antrix. This includes a record-breaking launch of 104 satellites in a single mission in 2017, with 101 being foreign satellites. Total satellites launched under the aegis of PM Modi are 450, both Indian and foreign. Out of the 431 foreign satellites launched by India until 2023, over 389 were launched between 2014 and 2023 itself, endorsing that a significant portion of foreign launches occurred under Modi's leadership. ISRO, for instance, conducted 58 launch vehicle missions between 2014 and 2025, a 38% increase from the 42 missions before 2014. Clearly, India's Space Odyssey under the Modi government is set to conquer many milestones, with the just concluded Axiom Mission 4, being just the tip of the iceberg. In its latest placement cycle, IIT Kharagpur secured an impressive 1,800 job offers, which included 409 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 25 international opportunities. Notably, nine students landed packages exceeding Rs 1 crore annually, with the highest offer reaching Rs 2.14 crore per annum. These remarkable placements were extended by leading global tech companies, highlighting the robust industry connections and growing demand for talent from the institute's Computer Science and Engineering department. There are various departments, like applied mathematics and scientific computing, architecture and planning, biosciences and bioengineering, and chemical engineering, apart from regular BTech courses like CSE, ECE, among others. The Institute has some unique courses, also like department of hydrology, earthquake engineering, paper technology, water resources development and management and management studies. IIT Guwahati offers a comprehensive range of departments and interdisciplinary centres that span engineering, sciences, design, and humanities. Key engineering branches include Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. The placement season for 2023–24 witnessed participation from 466 registered companies. A total of 229 Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) were extended to students. The highest salary offered stood at an impressive Rs 2.05 crore per annum (CTC). Notably, 102 students secured packages of Rs 50 LPA or more. The Core and Tech sectors emerged as the top recruiters, continuing to dominate the placement landscape. Furthermore, 14 Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also participated. The Electronics and Electrical Engineering discipline recorded a strong placement performance during the 2023–24 placement season. Out of 64 registered students, 54 were successfully placed, resulting in an impressive placement percentage of 84%. IIT Hyderabad offers a range of undergraduate programmes like BTech, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and more. Additionally, it offers a Bachelor of Design (BDes). The placement season saw 74.90% of students successfully placed across various sectors. The highest annual package reached Rs 63.78 LPA, while the average package stood at a strong Rs 20.07 LPA. A total of 335 companies participated in the placement drive, offering 621 job offers in total. 570 students secured placements, indicating a highly successful hiring season. Pre-placement offers (PPOs) were also significant, with 104 PPOs extended to students based on their internship performances. This is the only NIT in the list of top 10 where IITs have dominated. The Institute has left IIT BHU behind in the list. NIT Trichy is home to various courses like ECE, CSE, CE, among others. Other courses that make the Institute appear different from NITs are Energy and Environment, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Mathematics, Production Engineering and others. In the placement records for ECE for the duration 2020-21, the latest uploaded on the official website, 72 students were placed. Making the ECE placement reach 73.46 per cent and that too with the highest package of Rs 43.31 LPA. Among the core engineering courses, other courses offered y IIT BHU are Mining Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, Materials Science and Technology, and NC Jain School of Decision Science and Engineering. Some of the recruiters are Google, Goldman Sachs, Rakuten, PayPal, Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon, Samsung, Walmart, Unilever, Dream11, Intel, Cipla, Yubi, Jio, Mathworks, Zomato, and Optum and others.
