Escaped lion shot dead in Turkey after attacking worker
ISTANBUL: A lion that escaped a theme park near the Turkish resort of Antalya was shot dead Sunday after attacking a man, the local governor and media reports said. The lion, reportedly named Zeus, escaped his enclosure at the Land of Lions animal theme park in Manavgat, some 60 kilometres west of Antalya in the early hours of the morning, the local governor said in a statement.
According to BirGun newspaper, the lion then attacked an agricultural worker called Suleiman Kir who was asleep in a pistachio field with his wife. Kir then tussled with the lion before it ran off. He was injured but not badly and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
'We were covered with blankets to protect ourselves from mosquitoes and when the prayer call sounded, I tried to stand up but I couldn't,' he told the newspaper.
'Suddenly I felt something touch my left foot and when I eventually managed to get up, I saw it was something huge—I thought it was a dog.' In a video posted online, he described the moments wrestling with the lion. 'We called for help but there was no-one around. As the lion was biting my calf and my neck, I grabbed him around the neck and began to squeeze, and he backed off. At that moment, the security forces came,' he said.
'If I had not been strong, I wouldn't be here right now.' Antalya's governor said in a statement that the lion had been tracked down and shot dead. 'It was not possible to catch the escaped lion alive because it posed a danger to people and the environment so it was shot,' he said, indicating that an investigation had been opened into the incident. BirGun newspaper said there were around 30 big cats at the Land of Lions. – AFP

DHAKA: Sirens wailed as ambulances delivered charred bodies of children to a Dhaka hospital on Monday, victims of a military jet crash that killed at least 19 people, most of them young students. In Bangladesh's deadliest aviation accident in decades, a training aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into a school campus in the northwestern part of its bustling capital Dhaka. 'We have two playgrounds, one for the senior students and one for the juniors,' said Shafiur Rahman Shafi, 18, who is enrolled at the school. 'We were on the playground for the seniors. There were two fighter planes... Suddenly one of the two planes crashed here (in the junior playground),' he told AFP. 'It created a boom, and it felt like a quake. Then it caught fire, and the army reached the spot later.' The Dhaka hospital's joint director, Mohammad Maruf Islam, said most of the injured were aged between eight and 14. Of the 51 brought to the facility, at least 20 were critically hurt, he said. Monsur Helal, 46, waited grimly as his wife Mahrin—a coordinator in the school -- lay unconscious on life support. 'Mahrin was helping the children out of the classroom when the plane suddenly crashed near her,' he said. 'She was able to speak with me briefly, but now she is unresponsive.' Outside the hospital's intensive care unit, grieving and tearful mothers comforted one another, sharing harrowing stories of how they found their children. Dozens of volunteers lined up at the hospital, ready to donate blood. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus announced a day of national mourning on Tuesday. The crash was the worst aviation accident in the country in several decades. UK police arrest scores of Palestine Action supporters

Some 55 people were held at a demonstration in London's Parliament Square under the Terrorism Act 2000 for displaying signs supporting Palestine Action, the Metropolitan Police said. The protesters held up placards reading: 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.' Another nine were detained at a separate London march, and a further eight were held in Truro in Cornwall. Other protests were held in northwestern Manchester where 16 people were detained, in western Bristol where another 17 were arrested, and in the Scottish capital Edinburgh, police said. The rallies were organized by campaign group Defend Our Juries, which had said they were intended to 'defy' the ban. Since the Palestine Action ban kicked in on July 5, police have warned that expressing support for the group was now a crime, after a last-ditch High Court challenge failed to stop its proscription becoming law. The government announced plans for the ban under the 2000 Terrorism Act days after activists from the group claimed to be behind a break-in at an air force base in southern England. Two aircraft there were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated £7 million ($9.55 million) in damage. Four people charged in relation to the incident remain in custody. Six local officials detained over Iraq deadly mall fire

The blaze, which broke out late Wednesday in a newly opened shopping mall in the eastern city of Kut, is the latest fatal disaster in a country where safety regulations are often ignored. After an initial investigation, the interior ministry said 'there was clear negligence among several officials and employees' in Kut, located around 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. It added that three local officials, including the head of civil defense in Kut, had been detained, and 17 employees suspended from work until further notice. The Commission of Integrity, an anti-graft body, said later that security forces had detained three more officials 'over the violations that led to the fire' at the Corniche Hypermarket Mall, including the head of the violations department at Kut's municipality. Officials say their investigation is ongoing, and the number of detainees may change. Safety standards in Iraq's construction sector are often ignored, and the country—its infrastructure weakened by decades of conflict—frequently experiences fatal fires and accidents.
