KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — A new workers' anthem, Solidariti Perjuangan, took centre stage at the National Labour Day 2025 celebration today, drawing praise from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Penned by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong and inspired by the classic 1913 union song Solidarity Forever, the Malay-language version struck an emotional chord with the Prime Minister and the 10,000-strong crowd gathered at the event.
In his speech, Anwar called for the song to be played not only at the Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) but across all government ministries to uplift and inspire the nation's workforce.
'This is more than just a song, it speaks to the soul. It stirs the spirit of workers and reminds us of the sincerity and dignity of labour. I want this song to resonate in every ministry,' he said.
The song, performed by the Kesuma choir, received thunderous applause and cheers from workers representing both the public and private sectors.
Meanwhile, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that all local television and radio stations have been instructed to play Solidariti Perjuangan as a tribute to Malaysian workers.
'I've issued a directive for all TV and radio stations to play Solidariti Perjuangan, the song we heard just now.
'This isn't a song glorifying any football club — it's a song that honours the struggle of workers,' he said.
According to a fact sheet shared with the media, the song Solidariti Perjuangan encapsulates the spirit of unity, sacrifice, and strength of workers throughout the nation.
The original English version, Solidarity Forever was composed amid the struggles of workers fighting for their rights. Written in 1913 by Ralph Chaplin, the song was inspired by the unwavering resolve of coal miners and their families during the Paint Creek–Cabin Creek strike in West Virginia, United States.
Moved by the song's powerful message, Sim felt compelled to translate its spirit into the Malay language.
'More than 113 years later, Solidarity Forever now has a Malay version titled Solidariti Perjuangan, expressing the determination of Malaysia's trade union movement in defending the rights of workers in this country,' the statement said.
The Malay lyrics highlight workers' struggles in a locally relatable way, underscoring unity and the strength of organised labour. — Bernama

Deputy Digital Minister Calls For AI Legislation To Be Expedited

SHAH ALAM, June 28 (Bernama) -- Specific legislation governing artificial intelligence (AI) must be expedited due to the growing negative impact of the technology, particularly in fraud-related crimes. Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said he was informed that between 2020 and 2024, AI-related crimes have resulted in an estimated global loss of around RM5 billion. 'I expect the AI legislation to be tabled this year so that we can tighten control and outline appropriate penalties for those who misuse this technology,' he said when met at the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 celebration, here today. He was responding to questions regarding the misuse of AI technology, including incidents involving high-ranking government officials including former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Johor Police Chief Datuk M Kumar S Muthuvelu. Acryl Sani and M Kumar had previously denied appearing in separate viral videos circulating on social media, which showed individuals resembling both of them allegedly receiving aid from a person bearing the title 'Datuk'. He said in response to this matter, his ministry is actively conducting awareness campaigns through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme to engage and educate the public, especially in rural areas, so that they do not fall victim to AI-related fraud. 'I have gone to Sabah, the interior of Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to raise awareness among rural communities about the latest tactics and modus operandi of these criminals,' he said. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo was previously reported as saying that a full report on the proposed regulations and the possible enactment of specific legislation for AI would be submitted to his ministry by the end of this month. -- BERNAMA

Rafizi's criticisms dragging PKR backwards, says report

Rafizi Ramli had resigned from the Cabinet after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the post of PKR deputy president. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The accusations levelled by former economy minister Rafizi Ramli at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim are dragging PKR backward, says Berita Harian group editor Zulkifli Jalil. In a recent opinion piece, Zulkifli said that Rafizi, since resigning from the Cabinet, had seemed to be 'burning the mosquito net to kill the mosquito', using a Malay idiom to describe how the former minister's criticisms will harm the party's image. 'On Friday (June 20), Rafizi started his first podcast, 'Yang Berhenti Menteri', after his exit from the Cabinet. 'He is still making accusations. He likes to make his own conclusions and point fingers at the prime minister,' he said. Zulkifli criticised Rafizi for publicly going against PKR, pointing out that the party took 25 years to reach where it is today. 'Why burn the mosquito net to kill a mosquito? Rafizi's actions seem to be dragging PKR backward,' he said. Rafizi had resigned from the Cabinet after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the post of PKR deputy president. In his podcast, he said it was better for him to resign than to become a 'lame duck' minister or a 'yes man'. Rafizi claimed it was clear he had lost the prime minister's confidence, making it impossible to carry out reforms effectively. However, Zulkifli said Rafizi had been rash to resign, as he still had the support of the public despite losing party support. He pointed out that Rafizi had not been asked or pressured to resign, and the prime minister himself had asked him to stay. Zulkifli said there was no need for a minister to hold a party post, and that Rafizi had a good track record as economy minister with initiatives such as the People's Income Initiative, Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and the 13th Malaysia Plan. He added that Rafizi should have calmed down and asked himself if resigning would have benefited the party. Zulkifli said winning and losing is common in politics. 'Politics is very dynamic. One cannot be petty in politics. A politician must resist criticism. He cannot be thin-skinned (telinga nipis),' he added.

Kaamatan, Gawai Festivals Bolster Bornean Unity

PENAMPANG, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Kaamatan and Gawai festivals are not mere celebrations of gratitude because they also serve as a platform to enhance the cultural bond between the people of Sabah and Sarawak, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the close ties between the two states must be preserved, as they constitute the core of unity and harmony among the multiracial communities in East Malaysia. 'Sabah and Sarawak not only share borders but also a Bornean identity steeped in culture, customs, and traditions. We must enhance this bond for our progress and well-being,' he said in a speech at the Kaamatan-Gawai 2025 gala dinner here tonight.
