Safety fears over lack of parent and child parking spaces
Mid and East Antrim Council is one of only five local authorities in Northern Ireland with parent and child spaces at its council-run car parks. This does not include facilities at leisures centres.But Ms Gray said the number of family-friendly spaces was "lacking" in the council's car parks."Modern life doesn't really blend well with our existing town infrastructure because our towns are quite old," she said.She said increasing the number of bays would "ease stress for local families and carers" who need to get toddlers, babies and prams out of their cars."We need to make our town centre more accessible if we want people to come and shop and spend time here," she added."Not only is this a real safety issue for parents and carers, it really is a combined effort to get everybody into the town centre so that we can continue to grow and increase our footfall."
'Cars are bigger, spaces aren't'
Amy Moore from Whitehead, County Antrim, agreed, saying it was "definitely hard getting out of a normal car parking space with two children"."Anywhere that we go to park we need both doors open to get them out," she said."We've got the baby bag and all of the things to get out of the car so we definitely need the extra space."Mrs Moore said, on occasion, she has "driven around three or four times to find a space that would be suitable"."I think a lot of the cars now have increased in size now but the spaces haven't increased as well," she said.
'Difficult' with four grandchildren
Amy's mother Anna Rolloos has four grandchildren and said it can be "difficult" to get them all in and out of the car.Ms Rolloos said she needs space to open the doors, get the pram out and her youngest grandchild strapped in before getting the other children out."It's the safety of having them all close beside you, being able to open the doors of the car," she said."One of the children maybe needs someone holding their hand."She said having parent and child spaces close to shops is "excellent" as it means "not having to walk them through a busy car park".
The motion calling for more parent and child parking bays at Mid and East Antrim Borough Council was backed unanimously in February.A spokesperson added that an additional 22 family-friendly bays were due to be added in Ballymena car parks.
What is happening at off-street car parks in other areas?
Derry City and Strabane Council recently introduced new bays and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has plans to increase the number of spaces from 14 to 18.Belfast City Council has 17 family-friendly spaces across 30 car parks with no plans to increase that number, while Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council has six such spaces with plans for additional spaces in the pipeline.Ards and North Down Council as well as Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council have no family-friendly spaces at their off-street car parks, but there are some at their leisure facilities.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council does not provide any parent and child car parking spaces within its car parks, adding that councils are "not legally obligated" to do so.Mid Ulster does not have any parent and child spaces in any of the council-maintained car parks and has no plans to change that.Likewise, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council does not provide parent-child parking spaces in its off street car parks but is currently reviewing its overall car parking plan.Causeway Coast and Glens said the council did not keep a record of such information.

Flore bypass improvements after several fatal crashes
Changes are being made to a major road that has seen several fatal crashes since it was built seven years on the A45 Flore Bypass in Northamptonshire will begin overnight on Monday 4 Northamptonshire Council (WNC) says a central hatched area will be introduced to make it clear that the road is a single - and not a dual - carriageway."A new enforcement bay is also being built at the end of the bypass near the M1, and the route will be subject to an increased number of police patrols," a WNC spokesman added. A van driver died on the bypass in February, after a crash in broad daylight with a white Mercedes Sprinter. At least two other drivers have died in collisions since the bypass opened in council spokesman said: "A central hatched area is being introduced on the Flore Bypass to improve road safety following several incidents."This is being done to give a visual guide to motorists that the road layout is a single carriageway and to reduce the number of accidents caused by overtakes."The road will be fully closed each night from Monday 4 to Tuesday 19 August, between 20:00 and 06:00 BST, with a signed diversion route."The council appreciates residents' patience while these important improvements are carried out to enhance safety for all road users," the spokesman added. Irwin set for BSB return from injury at Thruxton

Woman left stunned after receiving four-figure parking ticket for 45 minute stay in hospital parking lot
A California woman was left in shock after receiving a four-figure parking ticket for a 45-minute stay in a hospital parking lot. Cate Daniels was left with a staggering $7,829 parking fee following the brief visit at Glendale Memorial Hospital parking garage in Los Angeles County on Friday. Daniels told CBS News that when she saw her ticket, it said she had been parked there for more than three years. The picture of the receipt claims she entered the parking lot in the year 2022. Daniels claims a parking attendant accused her of knowingly leaving her vehicle in the lot for weeks. However she claims she was told by parking attendants that 'this happens sometimes'. 'How can, when people are receiving healthcare, something like this happen with any frequency?' she told the outlet. 'That is appalling. That's my concern. That this is something that is systematic. I don't hear any inclination to correct it.' The picture of the receipt claims she entered the parking lot in the year 2022. Daniels claims a parking attendant accused her of knowingly leaving her vehicle in the lot for weeks The garage is operated by Parking Company of America, which blamed the enormous charge on a computer glitch. In a statement, the company admitted the fee, 'should not have happened' and said the issue is being resolved. The company said they are in the process of refunding the charge. In May, a new law in California began blindsiding drivers with steep fines for seemingly minor parking violations. The state-wide law, Assembly Bill 413, which went into effect March 1, bans parking within 20 feet of any crosswalk - marked or unmarked - to improve pedestrian visibility. But, many curbs aren't painted red up to the full 20 feet, creating confusion and costly tickets of nearly $120 for unsuspecting drivers. The rules are so unclear that authorities in San Francisco said they would not fine drivers in violation. Meanwhile, officials in San Diego have written thousands of tickets to motorists. 'It's all about pedestrian safety,' Erin Longen, Parking Enforcement Supervisor with the San Diego Police Department, told Fox 5 at the time. 'It's basically that no one can park within 20 feet of an unmarked or marked crosswalk on the approach side of the crosswalk.' To raise awareness ahead of its enforcement, the SDPD began public outreach and issued warnings starting January 1. 'We handed out 1,500 warnings for two months - it was a little blue slip we would leave on cars we saw in violation,' Longen said. 'This helped get the word out ahead of the ticketing and enforcement.'
