Defence experts hail govt's decision to approve AMCA Programme Execution Model, calls it a 'game-changing step'

Time of India28-05-2025
Defence experts on Wednesday hailed the government's decision to approve the
Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft
(AMCA) Programme Execution Model and called it a game-changing step for India's defence.
Defence Expert Shiwalee Deshpande said that the decision shows the country's and the government's faith in the indigenisation and the
Make in India defence technology
.
"The government's decision to give its manufacturing to the private players is a game-changing step. It shows the countries' and the government's faith in the indigenisation and the Make in India defence technology... The future wars are going to be very difficult. So this is a welcome step to increase our air power in a world where countries are developing fifth-generation and sixth-generation aircraft... Since the private and public sectors will work jointly on this project, we will get the aircraft ready quickly and as and when we require them."
Retired Air Vice Marshal Suryakant Chintaman Chafekar said that Intelligence gathering and creating new systems are a race in the present scenario, and buying another country's aircraft can pass on information to other countries.
"Intelligence gathering and creating new systems are a race in the present scenario. If we buy another country's aircraft, half of the things about it, like the communication system, radar, or the frequency it uses, are known to the world," he said.

"After the success of our air defence system in Operation Sindoor, we are on a high. Make in India has been appreciated worldwide because of our defence system... That's why we have embarked on this (AMCA programme). However, the government fully realises that there is no way that only PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) can take on this job. That is why they have opened it up in a big way to the private industries... Private sector involvement will give impetus to producing the fifth generation aircraft," Chafekar added.
Calling it a bold step for the Indian Armed Forces, he said, "We have to be careful about the timeline. Our experience with Tejas was not good because the timeline could not be followed."
On May 27, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Programme Execution Model, a key step to boost India's indigenous defence capabilities and strengthen the domestic aerospace industry, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in an official statement.
According to the MoD's statement, in a significant push towards enhancing India's indigenous defence capabilities and fostering a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Programme Execution Model.
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is set to execute the programme through industry partnership.
The Execution Model approach provides equal opportunities to both the private and public sectors on a competitive basis. They can bid either independently or as a joint venture, or as a consortium. The entity/bidder should be an Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country, the statement said.
This is an important step towards harnessing the indigenous expertise, capability and capacity to develop the AMCA prototype, which will be a major milestone towards Aatmanirbharta in the aerospace sector.
ADA will shortly issue an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the AMCA Development Phase, the statement added.
Following the announcement, the stock markets reacted strongly to the development, with shares of defence and related companies rising by around 6 per cent at the time of reporting.
The stocks of defence and allied sectors such as
Hindustan Aeronautics
(HAL),
Cochin Shipyard
, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Bharat Dynamics (BDL), BEML, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Ideaforge Technology,
Bharat Electronics
, Apollo Micro Systems, and
Paras Defence and Space Technologies
were up between 1 and 6 per cent.
Following the news, the Nifty India Defence index reached 8,674.05, a fresh 52-week high. (ANI)

PM Narendra Modi to address crucial NDA meeting ahead of V-P polls and amid Parliament logjam today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary party meeting today. This get-together of the ruling alliance's MPs is being held after a considerable gap, news agency PTI said. The NDA meeting, which Narendra Modi will chair, will take place a couple of days before nominations for the vice president's election begin on 7 August. The NDA must announce its candidate, whose election will be a certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral college, by 21 August, the last date of nomination filing and the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The meeting also comes in the middle of a session which has been all but a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united Opposition's ceaseless protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission. PM Modi is expected to speak on a host of current issues as the Opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body's alleged partisan conduct favouring the government, and the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The prime minister is also likely to be felicitated by the parliamentary party over his government's military response to the terror strike. The electoral college for the vice president poll includes MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the Opposition also names a candidate, a distinct possibility, then the poll is scheduled to be held on 9 September. Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and a few BJP national general secretaries are likely to be coordinating with allies for the vice presidential poll. Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the sessional meeting of the party's MPs was expanded to include its allies. PM Modi had addressed the first such meeting on July 2. However, no meeting has been held in the last few sessions. Before the last national elections, he addressed the weekly meetings of the BJP parliamentary party, which has now expanded to include party allies such as the TDP, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas). The meeting is attended by MPs of the ruling alliance, and PM Modi often discusses a wide range of political and governance issues and, at times, touches on the government's agenda in Parliament. He often offers the MPs talking points to be raised in public, especially in their constituencies.

PM Modi To Address NDA Parliamentary Party Meeting Today

The high-stakes meeting, being held in the Parliament complex, will see the participation of all Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partners. Attendance has been made mandatory for all NDA MPs. This NDA Parliamentary Party meeting comes at a crucial juncture, just two days ahead of the opening of nominations for the Vice-President's election, scheduled to begin on August 7. With the NDA holding a clear majority in the electoral college, the selection of its Vice-Presidential candidate is anticipated to be a formality. However, the alliance is expected to finalise and announce its nominee by August 21, the last date for filing nominations, aligning with the end of the current session. PM Modi will be honoured during the meeting, particularly for the success of Operation Sindoor, a counter-terrorism mission launched in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The Prime Minister's address is expected to address this critical operation, the nation's security challenges, and several ongoing political issues that are dominating parliamentary discourse. The Monsoon Session has largely been disrupted so far, with the Opposition staging continuous protests, particularly over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Opposition alleges that the revision exercise is politically motivated and biased in favour of the ruling party. PM Modi is also expected to respond to these accusations, reaffirm the government's stance on the electoral process, and lay out the NDA's legislative priorities for the remainder of the session.

NDA meet on August 5; restoration of J&K statehood may be discussed

NEW DELHI: Amid speculation that the Narendra Modi government is likely to spring surprises by taking some major and unexpected decisions, the NDA parliamentary party will meet on Tuesday. The prime minister is expected to address the MPs. The NDA MPs will felicitate Modi on the occasion for the success of Operation Sindoor in particular, and other achievements. The meeting will continue, allowing NDA leaders to speak. Previously, at NDA parliamentary meetings, the Prime Minister has addressed MPs. Following a wider discussion on several issues, the PM is expected to address the gathering. Meanwhile, a day after Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah separately called on President Droupadi Murmu, speculation continued on Monday regarding a potential decision to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. The buzz followed closely on the heels of Modi's praise for the visit of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. 'There seems to be something big taking shape in the government. It is being speculated that the Modi government may decide on restoration of statehood to J&K on August 5—the day Article 370 was abrogated,' remarked several, including some with political ties to the Saffron party. The speculation gained further traction after several journalists posted cryptic updates on their social media accounts, hinting at the possibility of statehood being restored. However, no senior minister has made any direct comment. When asked by the media, most chose to avoid the topic, often offering little more than a knowing, mysterious smile. 'We think the NDA MPs will felicitate PM on the grand success of Operation Sindoor and may thereafter engage in some discussion. It is likely that PM will address the NDA meeting,' remarked a senior NDA leader.
