PM calls to strengthen democratic institutions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the nation to renew its resolve to strengthen parliamentary institutions, uphold democratic values, and ensure that the voices of the people are truly reflected in the lawmaking process.
In a message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, he said, "The day is observed every year on June 30 to reaffirm our global commitment to reinforcing democratic institutions." "The day also celebrates the vital role of Parliaments in promoting inclusive governance, ensuring meaningful representation of women and youth, and embracing technological innovation in legislative practices," he said. The PM noted, "Our Parliament occupies a central place in our democratic framework. Through its legislative authority and the vigilant work of its standing committees, Parliament ensures accountability, transparency, and oversight of the executive."
"The Constitution of Pakistan enshrines representation of women through reserved seats under Articles 51 and 59. Our women parliamentarians have also risen to leadership positions: currently, eight women Senators and four women Members of the National Assembly serve as Chairpersons of Parliamentary Committees, breaking glass ceilings and setting an example of inclusive and empowered leadership," he remarked.
The prime minister said, "Parliament has also remained proactive in enacting progressive legislation, particularly to advance gender equality and social protection."
He said, "As we mark this important day, let us renew our resolve to strengthen parliamentary institutions, safeguard democratic values, and ensure that the voices of the citizenry are truly reflected in the lawmaking process."

PTI MNA Chaudhry Usman Ali joins PML-N

ISLAMABAD: In a despicable shift of loyalty, Chaudhry Usman Ali, elected as a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent in February's general elections, officially abandoned his party on Monday to join the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The defection followed a high-profile meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the adviser to the prime minister on political affairs Rana Sanaullah, igniting fierce criticism and casting doubt on the loyalty of lawmakers who capitalised on jailed PTI founding chairman Imran Khan's popularity to secure victory. Ali won the 2024 general elections as a PTI-backed independent candidate, defeating three-time PML-N veteran Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf by securing 107,494 votes compared to Ashraf's 96,174 votes from NA-142, Sahiwal-II. In February 2024 general elections, he campaigned openly as a PTI ally after the party was barred from contesting under its own banner. He repeatedly pledged allegiance to the jailed ex-PM Imran Khan and consistently criticised the ruling PML-N at every opportunity. Some months ago, Ali publicly swore on the holy Quran that he would never betray Imran Khan after reports surfaced that he planned to vote for the controversial 26th Amendment – a constitutional amendment vehemently opposed by PTI. Yet, in a stunning betrayal, he not only switched sides but also became a key supporter of the amendment, cementing his place within the ruling coalition. Ali's switch is widely seen as a cynical grab for power, reducing his earlier oaths and promises to empty words. For many voters who supported him on the promise of PTI loyalty, the defection is a gut punch and a stark reminder of Pakistan's fractious political landscape. For the PML-N, Ali's defection is a strategic boost amid growing tensions with PTI lawmakers, but for ordinary voters who entrusted Ali with their mandate to support Imran Khan's agenda, the betrayal feels personal and profound. President signs Finance Bill into law

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday gave formal assent to the Finance Bill for the fiscal year 2025-26, completing the constitutional procedure required for the passage of the federal budget. According to official sources, the president signed the bill after it was approved by the National Assembly through a majority vote on Friday. This approval grants the federal government the legal mandate to implement its planned revenue measures and expenditures for the upcoming financial year. The new budget will come into effect at midnight, bringing into force a series of new tax measures and financial reforms detailed in the finance bill. These changes aim to support the government's economic priorities and fiscal objectives for 2025-26. President Zardari's signature marks the final legislative step, enabling the government to proceed with its economic agenda and manage national finances according to the newly outlined framework. With this process now complete, the government is positioned to roll out its budgetary initiatives, including measures intended to boost revenue collection and address fiscal challenges. The approval also reflects the culmination of parliamentary debate and review, setting the stage for the practical implementation of economic plans in the coming months. Indus waters case: FO welcomes The Hague court decision

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Monday welcomed a decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague to issue a supplemental award in the Indus Waters case. The ruling urges India to resume the operation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which New Delhi has held in abeyance since May. In April, India suspended the treaty following an attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian-occupied Kashmir, which killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, though Islamabad denied involvement. Pakistan condemned India's suspension of the treaty as an 'act of war,' highlighting that the IWT contains no provisions allowing unilateral suspension. Islamabad has also threatened legal action, citing violations of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. The PCA's supplemental award, announced on 27 June 2025, reaffirmed the court's jurisdiction over the dispute involving Pakistan and India's hydroelectric projects at Kishenganga and Ratle. The court declared its ongoing responsibility to ensure a timely and fair resolution of the matter. The Foreign Office described the award as a vindication of Pakistan's position that the treaty remains valid and operational, and criticised India's unilateral decision to suspend it. A statement issued by the Government of Pakistan called on India to 'immediately resume the normal functioning of the Indus Waters Treaty and fulfil its treaty obligations.' It also welcomed the PCA's ruling on competence, which rejected India's suspension of the treaty, expressing optimism for the forthcoming award on the merits following hearings held in July 2024. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan's readiness to engage in meaningful dialogue with India on outstanding issues including Jammu and Kashmir, water, trade, and terrorism. According to the PCA, the treaty does not allow either party to unilaterally suspend or hold it in abeyance. The court stated such actions would undermine the treaty's dispute resolution mechanisms. The court further noted that India's position was not justifiable under international law. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
