Communal tensions triggers in Pune's Yavat village, one detained

The Hindu20 hours ago
Communal tensions erupt after mob clashed over a social media post violence in the Yavat village of Maharashtra's Pune district on Friday (August 1, 2025). Pune Rural Police detained the person, who updated the status concerning an alleged rape incident in Madhya Pradesh.
According to police, Yavat was peaceful after desecration of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue incident, in which two individuals were taken into custody. 'On Friday, the situation erupts over a WhatsApp status. We have taken one person in the custody and start with the process of filing a case,' Special Inspector General (IG) for Kolhapur, Sunil Phulari, adding Section 163 has been imposed and issued a warning to those trying to incite mobs.
'The stones were hurled on the glass windows of cars. Two car windows were damaged, one motorcycle was also torched, one bakery also damaged. One religious prayer place is also damaged to some extent. It was immediately controlled by the local Police officials,' said IG Phulari.
The police deployed SRPF and additional police forces to maintain law and order. During the chaos, the two-wheelers and four-wheelers were vandalised.
Police also shut down the weekly market in Yavat and did punchnamas (documentation) of damages caused in the incident. The situation is under control and peaceful. Almost all routine affairs are now normalised, informed police.
IG Phulari calling the incident 'sudden' stated that strict action will be taken against the few local individuals and outsiders, who were involved.
While speaking to media, SP Sandip Gill stated the suspects involved in the vandalism and stone-pelting are yet to be detained.
An eyewitness Sameer Sayyed (39) underlined that after the villagers raised objection over the status, the people from both the community visited the accused house and questioned him why you posted it when things are sensitive.
Mr. Sayyed, a local businessman, called the incident pre-planned, saying, Police just took him the custody, and, in the meanwhile, mob started coming from everywhere causing the violence.
The viral post
The post which went viral was a collage of a symbolic photo of a child and an image of police station from MP with red background. Referring to a collage clip mentioning - MP, 60-year-old priest raped two girls (5 and 6 years old) inside a temple- the suspect wrote- 'Ek aur pandit (priest), ab bolo baghvadhari (saffron-clad). Think, if this is the condition in the age of social media, then what would these people have been doing 50 years back!!'
On July 26 night, an incident of desecration of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue caused tensions in Yavat.
Another eyewitness said the public meeting of MLA Gopichand Padalkar is also one of the reasons for such provocation. On July 31, BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar took a public meeting, wherein he spoke about desecration incident and called it a 'deliberate conspiracy' and urged police to conduct a 'combing operation' in Daund taluka to identify and deport the Bangladeshis or Rohingyas.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed lathi charge was used to pacify the tensions and asked, 'Is it necessary to make post after speeches? If someone is saying the speech is the reason, then it won't be tolerated. Some people are purposely putting status to ignite communal tensions. We will ensure the strict actions.'
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar confirmed that the status was about an incident related to Madhya Pradesh.

My statement on terrorism and religion deliberately misinterpreted: Prithviraj Chavan

'Everyone has the right to protest, but the real issue must be understood. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is a central agency. The probe into the 2008 blast case has been ongoing since 2014. The court has ruled there was a blast, but did not identify the perpetrators due to lack of sufficient evidence,' he said. Chavan was speaking at a press conference after the Shiv Sena earlier in the day protested against his comments after the seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case were acquitted by a Mumbai court two days ago. Karad, Aug 2 (PTI) Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday said his recent remark that 'terrorism has no caste, religion or colour' was deliberately misinterpreted for political gain. His statement was distorted to divert attention from core issues and create a political controversy, Chavan said. 'My words were twisted. I had said terrorism knows no religion, yet it was used to play politics,' he added. Chavan also questioned the government's failure to bring the culprits of the 2008 Malegaon blast to justice, stating, 'This was a serious terror act. Innocent lives were lost. If there is concrete evidence, punishment should be delivered. If not, why is the system failing to deliver justice?' The case, initially probed by the Anti-Terrorism Squad of Maharashtra Police, was later transferred to the National Investigation Agency, he said. 'Despite years of investigation, the real perpetrators remain unidentified. There is a need to investigate whether political pressure influenced the probe,' he said. Criticising the BJP-led state government, Chavan said, 'Industrial investment is declining in Maharashtra. In Beed, an extortion-related murder occurred over failure to pay Rs 2 crore. Even in Pune, industries are facing extortion threats.' He further claimed that extortion activities were flourishing under political patronage. 'Only the Chief Minister and Deputy CM can effectively act against such elements. No gangster can operate fearlessly without political backing,' he said. In his reaction to the judgement in the Malegaon blast case on Thursday, Chavan had said he was against the use of the term 'saffron terror' as saffron is the colour of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's flag and Warkari sect. While the BJP and several right-wing outfits latched on to the verdict to slam the Congress for allegedly coining the term 'bhagwa aatankwad' or saffron terror, Chavan had asserted that 'a terrorist who kills innocent persons has no religion'. On the use of the 'Hindu terror' term with regard to the Malegaon blast and the ensuing trial, Chavan had asked which religion the accused belonged to. 'The first act of terror was the murder of Mahatma Gandhi. Which religion did (the Mahatma's assassin) Nathuram Godse belong to,' the senior Congress leader had questioned. Police arrest 15 persons for communal violence in Pune's Yavat; 5 FIRs filed, more than 500 booked

Yavat police station senior inspector Narayan Deshmukh said 15 persons have been arrested so far, all of whom were remanded in police custody till August 6. The youth who posted the objectionable status on WhatsApp has also been arrested, the official said. Pune, Aug 2 (PTI) Police have arrested 15 persons after registering five FIRs against more than 500 individuals in connection with the communal violence in Yavat village of Pune district that broke out over an alleged objectionable status on a social messaging platform, officials said on Saturday. Communal tension erupted and incidents of violence took place in Yavat village in Daund tehsil on Friday afternoon, in which several groups of persons, angered by the social media post, vandalised and set ablaze properties. 'So far, we have registered five cases in connection with the violence. Four of the cases are against more than 500 people who were allegedly involved in arson and damage to property. Of these, more than 100 people have been identified,' an official of Yavat police station said. Those involved in the incident targeted a motorcycle, two cars, one religious structure and a bakery, and indulged in arson. The police had to lob tear gas shells and resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mob, the official said. The police have issued prohibitory orders in Yavat and the situation is under control, he said. Talking to reporters, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill said the preliminary probe does not point to any planned conspiracy, and conclusions cannot be drawn until the inquiry is over. 'Till Saturday afternoon, police have registered five FIRs in connection with the incident,' he said, adding that the person whose objectionable post triggered the violence has resided in the village for years. The SP added that after the violence broke out, the police responded quickly and brought the situation under control. 'A large contingent of security personnel, including State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), has been deployed in the village. Authorities also imposed prohibitory orders under Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) section 163 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 144 from Friday night. They will remain in place till the situation is assessed further,' Gill Said. Talking to PTI, Additional SP Ganesh Biradar said social media platforms were being monitored. 'We are also using drones in villages to keep an eye,' he said. Rahul Kul, BJP MLA from the Daund constituency, also visited the violence-hit village on Friday night and held talks with Special Inspector General of Kolhapur Range Sunil Phulari and other senior police officers. He attributed the unrest to a handful of individuals and strongly denied any political motive behind the clashes. When asked about the current situation, a villager said, 'There is no tension now and the situation is under control. We share brotherly relations with everyone around, but the clashes broke out over some objectionable status.' During his visit to Pune on Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said a youth hailing from some other place had uploaded an objectionable post about a Hindu priest being involved in a rape case, which angered residents. 'To disperse the mob, police had to resort to lathi charge. The situation in Yavat is now under control and peace prevails. People from both communities are together and efforts are on to defuse tensions. Some people keep such objectionable posts just to create tension. Strict action will be taken against them. No one has the right to post objectionable content,' the CM had said. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited the site on Friday and said the youth who allegedly uploaded the objectionable Whatsapp post hails from Nanded and is a daily wage labourer. He put out an objectionable post related to an incident that took place in Madhya Pradesh, which angered the locals and they resorted to vandalism, he said. Tension has been simmering in Yavat over the last one week. On July 26, a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was allegedly desecrated in the village, in which a non-native person was involved. After that, the Yavat gram panchayat passed a resolution to identify outsiders settled in the village and take appropriate action against them. Changing landscape of cybercrime in Jharkhand

Ranchi: Only a few years ago, Jamtara, a district in tribal dominated Santhal Pargana division with over 8 lakh people, emerged as the hotspot of organised cybercrimes which were committed across the country. Now, law enforcement officials in Jharkhand are trying to crackdown against cybercriminals who have changed their tactics and their base of operations by fanning out to other districts such as Deoghar, Giridih, Dhanbad, Hazaribag and Koderma and committing high-value frauds, including investment scams and digital arrests. Police investigation into reported cybercrimes in recent months have revealed that the criminals are often working for a international organised cybercrime syndicates whose handlers are sitting in China, Dubai and other southeast Asian countries. Records available with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said 340 cyber fraud cases were reported since January this year. Of them, 110 were which 110 were related to investment scams and seven to digital arrests. The highest number of investment scams was registered in Deoghar, with a figure of 78. In one instance, the CID's cybercrime police station registered a case on May 14 in which fraud worth Rs 1.39 crore was committed against a resident. Posing as officials from an enforcement agency, the cyber criminals made a video call to the victim and implicated him in criminal activities and money laundering. The victim was threatened with immediate digital arrest and was coerced into transferring large sums of money under psychological duress. During the investigation, CID arrested two cyber criminals, one of whom had links with a Dubai-based cybercrime syndicate. On May 5, a resident of Seraikela-Kharsawan district lodged a complaint in connection with investment fraud worth Rs 1.53 crore. The victim was enticed with an investment opportunity through a Facebook advertisement promising five times the return. He was asked to download a fake trading application via a link provided on WhatsApp and register for it. He was asked to invest in various bank accounts registered in the name of companies. The CID arrested a cyber-criminal from Hapur in Uttar Pradesh in this connection. Cyber slavery of the state's residents in Southeast Asian countries has also been reported. In August 2024, CID received a series of complaints from victims who stated they were misled with data entry jobs abroad, particularly in Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, and were forced to work in scam centres there. Two agents, who were natives of Jharkhand, were arrested in this connection. CID officials have stated that cyber criminals in Jamtara have also changed their ways in recent years. From seeking OTPs to carry out illegal purchases, they have now switched to coding and sending APK files to victims. The fraudsters pose as customer care executives of banks and telecom companies and call victims under the pretext of KYC updates, SIM reactivation, benefits of govt schemes, or loan processing. The victims are then sent a link to download an APK file, claiming it is needed for verification. Once installed, the APK grants full access to the victim's phone using screen-sharing or remote access features, often without the user's knowledge. As the victim enters sensitive information or receives OTPs, the fraudster views them in real-time, captures login details, and performs unauthorised transactions. A significant number of job-related cyber scams are also being registered, stated CID. The modus operandi of the Chinese-based prepaid job scam involves contacting victims through platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and Instagram with offers of easy online tasks and daily income. The tasks include liking videos, rating hotels, or boosting app downloads. The victims are paid small sums initially to build trust but later are asked to invest (prepay) money to unlock higher-paying tasks. As victims invest more, they see fake dashboards showing profits, but withdrawals are blocked unless more is deposited. As several people in the state are offering their accounts on a commission basis to cyber frauds for the transaction of money, it has created another challenge for the police. Fake Facebook accounts and hacking, frauds in the name of cryptocurrency investment, updating of know your customer, and preventing the blocking of bank accounts and Aadhar cards are also taking place in the state. In the recent past, fake Facebook accounts have been created for Ranchi deputy commissioner (DC) Manjunath Bhajantri, Hazaribag Sashi Prakash Singh, and Dhanbad DC Aditya Ranjan. Srinivas, the deputy SP of Ranchi cybercrime police station, said, "Like the improvised explosive devices which extremists make in various ways, the cyber criminals are devising new modes of committing crimes." CID is combating the cyber criminals from various angles, from registering cases to freezing the cyber frauds' accounts and arresting them. The CID has also taken legal recourse for the return of money frozen in the banks to the victims. CID IG Asim Vikrant Minz said, "Manpower has been increased at the Dial 1930 centre so that the office is functional round the clock and ensures that no call from the victims is dropped. We have adopted a proactive method in mapping cyber criminals through the Pratibimb app and taking steps to arrest them. Jharkhand is coordinating with other states through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre in the investigation. Cases with foreign linkages are a big challenge, as even if we have the addresses of the cyber criminals abroad, there is no guarantee that all the countries would cooperate." Elaborating the way forward, Minz said the police has set up cyber police stations in 14 districts, including Ranchi, Latehar, Hazaribag, Dumka, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Chaibasa, Saraikela, Jamtara, Deoghar, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Giridih, and Palamu. "In other districts, there are cyber cells to receive complaints," he added. More than 1,976 cyber criminals were arrested since November 2023 using the Pratibimb app while 3,610 mobile phones and 4,924 sim cards were seized. "Awareness is key to preventing cybercrimes. The CID is conducting drives in schools, colleges, and among professionals in this regard. People should learn that greed for large profits may land them in trouble. Banks should also try to verify when an elderly person starts making transfers of huge chunks of money," he added. A cyber expert and founder of Cyber Peace Foundation, Vineet Kumar, said, "The state govt should also have a rehabilitation centre for first-time offenders to give the person a chance to reform. An initiative in this regard has been started by my organisation in Jamtara district. More needs to be done in this regard."
