Rail network to reach Naxal-hit Bastar, location survey in concluding stage
A railway line in Naxal-affected Bastar in Chhattisgarh is on the verge of becoming a reality after the final location survey was conducted for the proposed 160-km railway track connecting the remote region in Chhattisgarh with Telangana.
This ambitious project will bring the Naxal-affected districts of Sukma, Dantewada and Bijapur into the railway network for the first time, officials said on Friday.
The final location survey for the proposed 160 km-long railway line from Kothagudem (Telangana) to Kirandul (Chhattisgarh) has entered its concluding stage.
The Indian Railways is conducting the survey using cutting-edge LiDAR technology, and the entire process is being closely monitored by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, given its immense significance for both national security and regional development, officials said.
With strong support from the Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai-led state government, the survey work has gained momentum once again.
The project aims to open new paths of education, healthcare, trade, and self-reliance for the people of Bastar.
The railway line will span three states -- Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh -- but the largest portion of over 138 km lies within Chhattisgarh, covering some of the most remote and underdeveloped tribal areas, they said.
While survey work has progressed rapidly in many sections, it has faced hurdles in Dantewada and Bijapur.
On June 9 this year, a survey team was stopped and assaulted by local villagers in Dantewada, halting work in a 26-km stretch in Dantewada and 35 km in Bijapur.
The incident was reported to the local administration, but the work remains incomplete in those parts.
Officials said only after the final location survey is completed can the Detailed Project Report (DPR) be prepared, which is essential to initiate construction.
This is why the Union government considers the project not merely a transport initiative but a strategic intervention for lasting peace and inclusive development in the region.
According to a letter dated June 26, 2025, from Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar to the chief secretary of Chhattisgarh, the project is now at a decisive juncture.
The LiDAR survey, conducted via drones and aircraft, helps accurately map the terrain, including hills, rivers, and vegetation, ensuring a safe and precise alignment for the railway line. Once the survey is completed, Indian Railways will finalise the DPR and move toward laying tracks.
There have been concerns of local villagers, mostly tribal residents, about losing land or forests.
However, the Chhattisgarh government has assured that the railway will bring opportunities, not harm.
Instructions have already been issued to the collectors of Dantewada and Bijapur to fully support the survey teams, officials said.
The government considers the railway line not just as a development project, but also as a decisive step in eliminating Naxalism from the region, officials said.
For decades, large parts of Bastar have remained isolated from mainstream progress, becoming vulnerable to extremist ideologies.
The arrival of a railway will not only improve connectivity but also establish a permanent presence of governance, trust, and stability in these areas, which is why the Union Home Ministry is directly monitoring the project, officials said.
For farmers, the railway line will be a lifeline providing easy access to markets for their produce such as paddy, mahua, tendu leaves, and bamboo, ultimately boosting incomes and encouraging economic independence, they said.
Tribal communities, long cut off from the rest of the country, will gain access to schools, hospitals, and employment through a reliable transport network.
Besides, children will reach schools more safely and swiftly, patients will get medical help on time, and youth will find new pathways for jobs and skill training, officials said.

Serbia: Protests erupt in Belgrade over calls for snap elections
Protestors in Serbia took to the streets of Belgrade and demanded an early election, as reported by Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera noted that the rally demanding snap elections comes in the wake of protests which took place eight months prior over a roof crash linked by critics to graft. Thousands of protestors demanded an early election to end the 12-year rule of President Aleksandar Vucic . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo As per Al Jazeera, large numbers of officers in riot gear were deployed to police Saturday's protests, which were organised by Serbia's university students. The students were a driving force behind nationwide demonstrations, which had started nearly eight months earlier, after the collapse of a renovated concrete rail station roof in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people. The deadly collapse last November became a turning point for frustrations with the government. As per Al Jazeera, many Serbians said that the roof collapse was the result of alleged corruption and negligence in state infrastructure projects. Under pressure, Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigned at the start of this year; however, President Vucic remains in power. Live Events Al Jazeera reported that hours before the rally at Slavija Square and Nemanjina Avenue, Vucic's party sent in buses of its own supporters from other parts of the country, many wearing T-shirts reading: "We won't give up Serbia". They were joining supporters who have been camping near Vucic's office in central Belgrade since mid-March. Al Jazeera reported that President Vucic, whose Progressive Party-led coalition holds 156 of 250 parliamentary seats, told reporters on Saturday that unspecified "foreign powers" were behind the protest and said that police should be restrained, but warned that "thugs will face justice". According to Al Jazeera, President Vucic had previously refused snap elections and has been intent on continuing his second term, which will end in 2027, when the parliamentary elections are also scheduled.

Odisha CM, Law Minister must resign for Rath Yatra chaos, mismanagement, demands BJD
Bhubaneswar, June 28 (UNI) Coming down heavily on the BJP-led Odisha Government for the "chaos and glaring mismanagement" during the observance of Rath Yatra at Puri, the Opposition BJD today said Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan should own moral responsibility for the lapses and resign. The BJD also demanded the government must immediately disclose the official number of deceased and injured persons in the stampede that occurred. Stating that this year's Rath Yatra witnessed unprecedented disorder and mismanagement, BJD Vice President Pratap Jena said the spiritual emotions of millions of devotees who travelled from across the country and abroad to witness the divine Trinity have been deeply hurt. The government's assurance of a flawless Rath Yatra turned out to be "nothing more than an empty promise", he said. Pointing out the chaos in observance of the festival of the revered deities, he said Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha chariot did not move an inch until late evening, in "a serious breach of tradition". The chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra too failed to cross the Balagandi Chhak. Despite there being no provision to pull chariots after sunset, the chariot of Lord Jagannath was dragged forward by a few feet at 7:45 PM, only to symbolically fulfill ritual protocol — a move that hurt the religious sentiments of devotees, the senior BJD leader Jena said. Ironically both the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan shied away from the responsibility by casually saying, 'it happened according to the Lord's will.' BJD strongly condemned "such irresponsible statements" and reminded the state government that it is their duty to conduct the Rath Yatra with discipline and dignity. Despite holding valid passes, journalists were denied entry into the cordon zone and were manhandled by police personnel assigned to cordon duty. Nearly seven–eight senior journalists were injured during this incident, he rued. He also stated that even with a large police presence, devotees were left unsafe during the chariot pulling, and the traffic system completely collapsed. With over 1,000 injuries reported, at least eight individuals were admitted to ICU, and reports of two or more deaths have surfaced, he said. He demanded the state government must immediately disclose the official number of deceased and injured persons. BJD further blamed the government's reckless distribution of record-high cordon passes for the chaos. Approximately 10,000 cordon passes were issued this year, many of which were distributed through party workers. Shockingly, two ministers alone issued 6,000 passes, leading to uncontrolled crowds breaching the cordon, significantly delaying the chariot pulling. Before the Yatra began, during the Anasara period, there were reports that a few Modak which were offered to the Lord were stolen. Notably, during last year's Rath Yatra, Lord Balabhadra's idol had fallen during the Pahandi ceremony, an incident that emotionally affected devotees worldwide. Till date, no report has been made public to that effect even after a year. UNI XC RN
