The rise of the outdoor kitchen: From backyard grills to full-fledged family living spaces

It wasn't long ago that outdoor cooking meant a grill, a bag of charcoal, and a cooler full of drinks. But today's homeowners are transforming their outdoor areas into full-fledged extensions of the home with all the appliances, layout, and comfort of an indoor kitchen.
According to Joe Redden of Appliance Gallery in Dayton, this shift is more than a design trend, it's a lifestyle movement.
'We've seen outdoor kitchens become the heart of the home, especially during spring through fall,' says Redden. 'Families aren't just cooking outside — they're spending time, entertaining, and making memories in their backyards.'
A new kind of family room
Gone are the days when one person was stuck at the grill while everyone else stayed indoors. Outdoor kitchens now serve as a shared hub for meals, conversation, and connection.
'Instead of Dad at the grill and everyone else inside, now you'll see three generations out there together — kids making pizzas, grandparents sitting by the fire, everyone gathered in the same space,' Redden explains.
According to an Outdoor Trends Report, 71% of homeowners say they use their outdoor space at least once a week, with nearly 40% using it several times a week. That frequency has made the backyard one of the most reliable gathering places for families.

Design that brings people together
The design itself plays a major role in promoting connection. Redden notes that bar seating, fire features, and built-in drink stations keep people engaged whether they're cooking or not.
'If you build it right, it naturally becomes the hangout zone,' he says. 'You don't even need an official occasion. People just gravitate to the space.'
Add in smart lighting, audio systems, and heaters, and many homeowners find themselves outside well into fall or even winter.
Outdoor kitchens also encourage more frequent home-cooked meals, with some families reporting a 40% increase in cooking at home during warmer months.* The space is more casual, more inviting, and often easier to clean up — making spontaneous meals more likely.
From DIY to designer
Whether a homeowner is working with a landscaper or starting from scratch, Appliance Gallery helps guide every step of the process. The showroom features fully outfitted displays of grills, islands, kegerators, refrigeration drawers, pizza ovens, pergolas, and more.
'We provide layout support and appliance planning,' Redden says. 'Some people come in with blueprints, others just have a photo on their phone. Either way, we help them see what's possible.'
Real life: One family's story
Redden recalls a customer who built a custom outdoor kitchen after moving into their 'forever home.'
'They wanted a space where their adult kids would want to come back and spend time,' he says. 'We built a layout with a pizza oven, full sink, grill, refrigeration, and a fire table. Now it's their go-to spot for birthdays and game days. It changed how they use their home.'
Features that matter most
While the grill is still a centerpiece, Redden says the most loved features are the ones that create conversation.
According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), outdoor kitchens make multi-generational entertaining easier by removing the limits of indoor space and providing flexible seating and serving areas.

Bridging generations, boosting wellness
What may surprise people is how outdoor kitchens help bridge generational gaps.
Grandparents hosting pizza nights. Parents relaxing while kids play. Everyone shares the same space without needing to split off into different rooms or screens. 'It's an excuse to get together,' says Redden. 'And when people are eating together, they're making memories.'
Studies even show that outdoor dining boosts mood, encourages longer conversations, and leads to higher overall homeowner satisfaction.* Families with outdoor kitchens often feel more connected and centered at home.
Start with inspiration
At Appliance Gallery, the showroom is updated every year to reflect new trends and technologies in outdoor living. Redden and his team take pride in offering not just products, but inspiration.
'Whether you're looking for a modular solution or a fully customized setup, we're here to help people envision the best use of their space,' Redden says.
Outdoor kitchens have made the leap from seasonal luxury to daily lifestyle upgrade. With thoughtful planning and the right appliances, backyards are becoming the most lived-in and loved spaces in the home.

Why Delray Vice Mayor Rob Long is getting in House race to succeed late Rep. Joe Casello

DELRAY BEACH — Rob Long, a local elected official and longtime political ally of the late state Rep. Joe Casello, entered the race July 23 to succeed him in the Florida House, setting up what could be an uncontested special election in one of the state's most reliably Democratic districts. Long, who serves as vice mayor in Delray Beach, pointed to his record on the Delray Beach City Commission as a foundation for his bid to represent the district in Tallahassee. He highlighted work on public safety contracts, infrastructure projects and efforts to shield redevelopment funding from legislative threats. "I've fought to protect our firefighters when political attacks threatened them, and I've worked to ensure our police officers have fair contracts that keep them here," Long said. "I've delivered major infrastructure projects, like a modern water treatment facility, and secured millions through environmental litigation." As a member of the Community Redevelopment Agency board, he said he pushed back against state-level efforts to weaken the agency, which he sees as essential to supporting affordable housing and local economic growth. ➤ Access The Palm Beach Post on the go with the app: Our app offers a personalized experience to your liking. "I've also seen the importance of local governance on local issues, and I will fight back against efforts to preempt city policy and undermine home rule," Long said. When is the election to fill the Florida 90th House district seat? The race to represent Florida's 90th House district — which spans parts of Delray Beach and Boynton Beach — is all but certain to remain in Democratic hands. The district is the most solidly Democratic in Palm Beach County, and so far, Long is the only candidate to file for the seat. He enters the race with backing of every Democratic lawmaker in the county, along with endorsements from the Service Employees International Union, the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council and the county's Fraternal Order of Police. Long had already filed paperwork in February to run in 2026, when Casello would have reached his term limit. His official entry into the special election came just a day after Gov. Ron DeSantis scheduled the contests: a primary, if needed, on Sept. 30, and a general election on Dec. 9. Because of the timing, the district will go without representation during early committee meetings for the 2026 legislative session. But it would have a seated representative by the time the full session begins next year. "While starting after the committee weeks is not ideal, I will be in Tallahassee during that period to follow the process, meet with colleagues, and prepare legislation so I'm ready to work on day one," Long said. "I already have established relationships in the Capitol, including the full support of the Palm Beach County Legislative Democratic Delegation, and I'm confident I'll be able to represent District 90 effectively from the start." Long's candidacy also triggers Florida's resign-to-run law, which requires him to step down from his commission seat. His resignation will become effective Dec. 8, the day before the special election. Under the city charter, the commission is responsible for appointing a replacement to serve out the remainder of Long's term. If they cannot reach consensus after two regular meetings, a special election must be held to fill the seat. Rob Long's resume: An engineer, environmentalist and politician An engineer by training, Long said his professional background has shaped his approach to public service, combining technical problem-solving with a focus on practical outcomes. Before joining the commission, he served on the Palm Beach County Soil and Water Conservation District, and has since led efforts on infrastructure, environmental protection and public safety in Delray Beach. "I've spent significant time in Tallahassee, building relationships and learning the legislative process, so I can be effective from day one," he said. "My years on the commission have honed my ability to lead, build consensus and get things done, even on contentious issues." If elected, Long said his top priorities would include public safety, affordability and environmental protection — areas he said have shaped both his local record and his legislative outlook. He pointed to stalled contract negotiations and partisan tensions that have affected morale among first responders, saying he would fight for fair compensation and better resources for police and fire departments. On affordability, he cited rising housing costs and Florida's property insurance crisis as pressing concerns, and said he would support efforts to crack down on industry abuses while expanding access to affordable housing. Environmental issues would also be central to his agenda. In Delray Beach, he helped lead a class-action lawsuit over PFAS contamination — polyfluoroalkyl substances are considered "forever chemicals" — and oversaw planning for a new water treatment facility to replace the city's aging infrastructure. Long was elected to the commission in 2023 after unseating incumbent Juli Casale. The two now serve alongside each other, following her return to the commission in a different seat earlier this year. As he looks ahead to the state House, Long said he hopes to honor Casello, who died July 18 after suffering a severe heart attack, by continuing his advocacy for first responders — including expanding heart health screenings and reintroducing legislation the two had worked on to reduce firefighters' exposure to toxic chemicals. JD.com to launch five discount stores as competition intensifies

BEIJING (Reuters) -Chinese retailer (JD) plans to open five discount superstores in two Chinese cities, marking its latest move into new segments as competition intensifies in its core e-commerce market. Confirming a report in Beijing Business Today, a government-backed newspaper, the company told Reuters on Tuesday that the supermarkets will be in Zhuozhou city in Hebei province and Suqian, Jiangsu province. The first outlet in Zhuozhou will span 5,000 square metres and will carry everything from detergent to chocolate, with prices intended to be below prevailing market levels. JD first entered the market last year with the opening of two smaller discount stores in Beijing, aiming to tempt cautious shoppers to spend as China's consumption recovery stalls. The 27-year-old e-commerce retailer launched "instant delivery" services for food and other goods earlier this year, kickstarting a subsidy war between itself and rival platforms such as Alibaba and Meituan. It also announced that it would renew an international push for growth, launching its consumer-focused express delivery service abroad. It also bought Germany's Ceconomy, Europe's largest consumer electronics retailer, for 2.2 billion euros ($2.5 billion) last month. Other rivals have been adjusting their bricks-and-mortar retail operations. On Tuesday, local newspaper The Economic Observer reported that the final Freshippo X club store, the membership store which is part of Alibaba's grocery chain, will close its doors on August 31, ending an attempt to battle Costco and Sam's Club.
