Your sweat stains can set off TSA body scanners

Travelers enduring scorching temperatures across the U.S. and Europe – or who tend to perspire profusely – may find their sweat stains triggering body scanner alarms at airport security. In a recent Reddit post, user u/ominous_pan said they couldn't figure out why they set off the millimeter wave scanner at a TSA checkpoint – the machine that creates 3D images of a traveler's body using radio waves. They claimed they had empty pockets and no body piercings. "I flew for the first time in 15 years this week and both airports flagged my crotch at the arms up scanner," the user wrote. In the comments, people suggested a potential reason was having sweat stains on her clothing, with several saying this has happened to them. It turns out that sweat can cause a false alarm at airport security, according to Shawna Malvini Redden, an organizational researcher and author of the book "101 Pat-Downs: An Undercover Look at Airport Security and the TSA." "The machine will send up an alarm if there's anything out of the ordinary," Redden told USA TODAY. "Conceivably, the machines could bounce off the sweat and cause a false alarm." Here's what travelers should know about sweat stains setting off false alarms. The machines where you enter and lift your arms use what's called millimeter wave advanced imaging technology, which scans passengers' bodies with non-ionizing radiation frequency, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The waves reflect off the body to detect weapons hidden underneath clothing, but can also catch water or sweat, according to ProPublica. Thicker or more layers of clothing are also more prone to setting off the alarm. In a statement, a TSA spokesperson confirmed that 'added moisture from a person's body can alter the density of clothing, so it is possible perspiration may cause our advanced imaging technology machines to alarm." False alarms with these scanners are not uncommon, with wigs, turbans and certain hairstyles also being wrongly detected by the machine. (Travelers can deny this type of screening in favor of a physical pat-down, unless their boarding pass states they've been selected for an enhanced screening.) Redden added that it's probably not the sweat itself but the "darker shadow" of the stain that's causing the false alarm. "Due to privacy software that protects passengers from having naked images of them produced by the scanners, (TSA officers) get a notation about an anomaly's general location, but no information about exactly where or what the object might be," she continued. If your sweat triggers the alarm, you'll likely be subject to additional screening, according to TSA. It may be anxiety-inducing, but there's no reason to panic, said Redden. "Alarms happen all of the time and unless you're smuggling something actually dangerous, the worst that will happen is a manual search in the form of a pat-down," she added. "This is something you can request a private room for and usually only adds a few minutes to your day." Jess Redden says she feels 'more anxious' on second pregnancy after miscarriage

The wife of rugby player Rob Kearney has told of her anxiety of being pregnant a second time as she opens up about miscarriage. Jess Redden announced earlier this week that she is expecting her second child with the retired rugby player. The couple are parents to toddler son, Bobby. But the pharmacist admitted she feels "more anxious" during this pregnancy than her last after suffering an early miscarriage. Redden, who welcomed firstborn Bobby in August 2023, opened up about her loss during an Instagram Q&A with her followers. "This pregnancy has been so different mentally," she began. "I'm definitely more anxious, even though I was so anxious with [Bobby], this time it's even worse, maybe because you know how precious they are or having experienced early loss before this one, but having Bobby is a blessing because it keeps my mind busy." The pharmacist said she suffered "awful nausea" in her first trimester, which she didn't experience with her first pregnancy. She also shared that she is suffering from an Overactive Bladder, despite having pelvic floor treatments last year. "But my gosh are they worth every weird and wonderful change that happens to our bodies," she said. Redden also said that the couple will not be finding out their babies' sex. "I found out for Bobby and managed to keep it from Rob for months, because he wanted a surprise, until I saw a dad and his baby son in matching swim shorts and burst into tears. So, this time we aren't finding out because I don't trust myself not to let it slip again!" Jess is currently 20 weeks' pregnant, with the couple expecting the arrival of their bundle of joy around Halloween. Earlier this week, Jess captioned a photo, which showed her holding their firstborn Bobby above her growing bump. "One more reason to believe in magic, a little more love is on the way," she wrote. Rob told Ireland AM earlier this week that he is "very excited" to become a father again. "It's great, we are very excited. Little Bobby is going to be a big brother. He doesn't know too much of it yet, his world is going to be turned upside down for a few weeks but he will be fine."

Regional day passes available now for CTA, Metra and Pace

CTA, Metra and Pace riders can now purchase day passes that cover unlimited rides on all three transit systems, the agencies announced Friday. The regional day pass costs between $10 and $16 on weekdays depending on the length of the Metra trip. Weekend day passes cost $9.50. The passes are priced to cost $2.50 more than a Metra day pass while giving riders full access to rides on CTA and Pace. That means that riders who, for instance, take a CTA train to and from a Metra station could save $2.50 by using the pass, because the cost of a CTA day pass is $5.00. Passes are available for purchase in the latest version of the Ventra app. The program is a pilot that is set to last at least six months. The day pass announcement comes after state lawmakers last month failed to pass transit reform legislation — or find funding to avert a looming $771 million fiscal cliff — during their spring legislative session. Legislation introduced in Springfield last month would have overhauled the structure and governance of the Regional Transportation Authority, which oversees CTA, Metra and Pace, by replacing it with a new oversight body called the Northern Illinois Transit Authority. The legislation, had it passed, would have given NITA broad authority to set fares and schedules and specifically called for the creation of an integrated fare system by 2030. Leanne Redden, RTA's executive director, referenced the failed governance and funding negotiations in Springfield in a statement about the day pass pilot. 'This pass is another step in our shared effort to make transit more seamless and rider-friendly across the region,' Redden said. 'To build a truly connected transit system, we need both reform and support, including increased operating funding and action on proposed legislative changes that would centralize and make fare integration easier to implement and sustain,' Redden added. The agencies could continue the pilot program permanently next year — 'depending on funding availability,' they said. The qualifier hints at the fact that the CTA, Metra and Pace are planning for the possibility of making drastic 40% service cuts next year if lawmakers don't allocate more funding in the coming months.

The rise of the outdoor kitchen: From backyard grills to full-fledged family living spaces

It wasn't long ago that outdoor cooking meant a grill, a bag of charcoal, and a cooler full of drinks. But today's homeowners are transforming their outdoor areas into full-fledged extensions of the home with all the appliances, layout, and comfort of an indoor kitchen. According to Joe Redden of Appliance Gallery in Dayton, this shift is more than a design trend, it's a lifestyle movement. 'We've seen outdoor kitchens become the heart of the home, especially during spring through fall,' says Redden. 'Families aren't just cooking outside — they're spending time, entertaining, and making memories in their backyards.' A new kind of family room Gone are the days when one person was stuck at the grill while everyone else stayed indoors. Outdoor kitchens now serve as a shared hub for meals, conversation, and connection. 'Instead of Dad at the grill and everyone else inside, now you'll see three generations out there together — kids making pizzas, grandparents sitting by the fire, everyone gathered in the same space,' Redden explains. According to an Outdoor Trends Report, 71% of homeowners say they use their outdoor space at least once a week, with nearly 40% using it several times a week. That frequency has made the backyard one of the most reliable gathering places for families. expand Design that brings people together The design itself plays a major role in promoting connection. Redden notes that bar seating, fire features, and built-in drink stations keep people engaged whether they're cooking or not. 'If you build it right, it naturally becomes the hangout zone,' he says. 'You don't even need an official occasion. People just gravitate to the space.' Add in smart lighting, audio systems, and heaters, and many homeowners find themselves outside well into fall or even winter. Outdoor kitchens also encourage more frequent home-cooked meals, with some families reporting a 40% increase in cooking at home during warmer months.* The space is more casual, more inviting, and often easier to clean up — making spontaneous meals more likely. From DIY to designer Whether a homeowner is working with a landscaper or starting from scratch, Appliance Gallery helps guide every step of the process. The showroom features fully outfitted displays of grills, islands, kegerators, refrigeration drawers, pizza ovens, pergolas, and more. 'We provide layout support and appliance planning,' Redden says. 'Some people come in with blueprints, others just have a photo on their phone. Either way, we help them see what's possible.' Real life: One family's story Redden recalls a customer who built a custom outdoor kitchen after moving into their 'forever home.' 'They wanted a space where their adult kids would want to come back and spend time,' he says. 'We built a layout with a pizza oven, full sink, grill, refrigeration, and a fire table. Now it's their go-to spot for birthdays and game days. It changed how they use their home.' Features that matter most While the grill is still a centerpiece, Redden says the most loved features are the ones that create conversation. According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), outdoor kitchens make multi-generational entertaining easier by removing the limits of indoor space and providing flexible seating and serving areas. expand Bridging generations, boosting wellness What may surprise people is how outdoor kitchens help bridge generational gaps. Grandparents hosting pizza nights. Parents relaxing while kids play. Everyone shares the same space without needing to split off into different rooms or screens. 'It's an excuse to get together,' says Redden. 'And when people are eating together, they're making memories.' Studies even show that outdoor dining boosts mood, encourages longer conversations, and leads to higher overall homeowner satisfaction.* Families with outdoor kitchens often feel more connected and centered at home. Start with inspiration At Appliance Gallery, the showroom is updated every year to reflect new trends and technologies in outdoor living. Redden and his team take pride in offering not just products, but inspiration. 'Whether you're looking for a modular solution or a fully customized setup, we're here to help people envision the best use of their space,' Redden says. Outdoor kitchens have made the leap from seasonal luxury to daily lifestyle upgrade. With thoughtful planning and the right appliances, backyards are becoming the most lived-in and loved spaces in the home.
