WNBA stars send message to league before All-Star Game amid contentious CBA negotiations
The players wore T-shirts that said "Pay Us What You Owe Us" during warmups.
The shirts included the Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) logo.
The game featured Team Caitlin Clark against Team Napheesa Collier. Both players were named captains for the game. Both of the All-Stars emerged wearing the shirts. Clark did so even though she is sidelined for the game because of a groin injury.
The players met with league officials Thursday, and the sides did not reach a deal. Chicago Sky star Angel Reese was one of many WNBA players who have expressed criticism of the league's handling of negotiations.
"It was an eye-opener for me. Like, hearing the things and hearing the language of things and not things that I was happy to hear. It was disrespectful the things that we were sent back, the proposal that we were sent back," she said Friday.
"It's important to be able to be vocal. If I sit back, it looks like I don't care."
New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu said the players weren't going to settle for "the minimum" in negotiations, while Phoenix Mercury player Satou Sabally called the league's latest CBA offer a "slap in the face."
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told The Associated Press after the meeting that the meeting was "constructive."
"It was very constructive dialogue. I think, you know, obviously, part of the process is to go back and forth and listen to the players. They listen to us and the owners who represent the Board of Governors," Engelbert said. "I still feel really optimistic that we can get something transformational done by the end. But it's a process."

After the Twins tied it on Wallner's second-inning homer, Abrams manufactured a run for the Nationals. He led off the third inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on Luis García Jr.'s sacrifice fly. Minnesota tied it again on Trevor Larnach's sacrifice fly in the bottom half. Key moment Leading 4-2, the Nationals loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Call hit a grounder up the middle that second baseman Brooks Lee was ready to turn into an inning-ending double play. Instead, the ball skipped off the side of the mound and caromed over Lee's head for a two-run single. Key stat Abrams has five leadoff homers this year and 12 in 470 career games. Up next Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 4.14 ERA) will take the mound for the Twins on Monday as they open a three-game series against visiting Boston. Perkins delivers winning hit as Brewers rally to beat Marlins 3-2 and avoid sweep
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Blake Perkins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Sunday. The Brewers erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring in each of the final two innings to avoid the sweep. The Brewers have been swept just once, in their opening series of the season at Yankee Stadium. Eric Haase hit a one-out bloop single to center off Cade Gibson (2-5) in the ninth and advanced to third on Brice Turang's broken-bat double down the left-field line. Gibson intentionally walked Jackson Chourio to load the bases. Perkins then lofted a 3-2 pitch well over the head of center fielder Dane Myers. Perkins had scored the tying run in the eighth after entering as a pinch-runner, stealing second and coming home on Andrew Vaughn's two-out, ground-rule double off Ronny Henriquez. Milwaukee's Trevor Megill (3-2) allowed a two-out double to Javier Sanoja in the top of the ninth, but right fielder Isaac Colins made a running catch of a fly ball to end the threat. Miami's Heriberto Hernández homered for a second straight game. Key moment Miami led 2-1 and had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh when the Marlins ran themselves out of an inning. Aaron Ashby picked off Myers at second base. Alex Bregman hits 2-run HR, Red Sox take series vs. Dodgers with 4-3 win
BOSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning and the Boston Red Sox hung on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Sunday for a series win. Rookie Roman Anthony added an RBI triple for the Red Sox, who captured their first series since the All-Star break. Boston had a 10-game winning streak entering the break. Boston closer Aroldis Chapman walked off the mound with an apparent injury in the eighth inning. In to face the top of the Dodgers' order, his velocity was noticeably down to the mid-90 mph on his fastball instead of the high 90s to low 100s. Michael Conforto hit a solo homer and had two doubles for the Dodgers. Jordan Hicks entered and got out of a two-on, one-out mess when Teoscar Hernández lined to second and Ceddanne Rafaela dove to the bag, beating Hyeseong Kim for double play. Hicks pitched the ninth for his second save. Brennan Bernardino (4-2) got an out in relief for the victory. Facing his former team for the first time since getting the final out of the World Series for them last fall, Boston right-hander Walker Buehler gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
