Opposing parties use mass Budapest Pride to boost their own agendas

Euronews30-06-2025
Both the Hungarian government and the opposition are trying to spin Saturday's Budapest Pride march, which attracted an unprecedented turnout, to serve their own political interests.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called the march "repulsive and shameful," saying it was not a spontaneous public initiative and instead accused "puppet politicians" in Brussels of orchestrating the event.
"This is proof of what life would be like if our country were not run by a national government defending our sovereignty," the Prime Minister warned on the Facebook group "Warriors' Club", an organisation close to his party Fidesz.
He added that he believed the same would happen in the case of migration and the Ukraine war.
"No demonstration can compete with the 3.7 million voters in the 2022 gender referendum. What's more, repulsive and shameful things have happened. Drag queen shows on stage, men in high heels, hormone therapy brochures. This is not pride, this is shame," Orbán wrote.
Despite a government ban, more than 100,000 people took part in the march through Budapest.
Pro-government media claimed it as a success for the Prime Minister. Local media Manidner wrote that Orbán's master plan has worked: "The opposition has become one with Pride, which polls show is opposed by the majority in Hungary."
However, Bulcsú Hunyadi, an analyst at Political Capital, believes that the march created an uncomfortable political situation for the ruling Fidesz party.
"Fidesz introduced a law in an effort to ban Pride, but Pride happened, and an unprecedented crowd participated, expressing solidarity not only with the LGBT community, but also expressing their opposition to Fidesz wanting to ban an event," Hunyadi said, adding that "Fidesz set this trap and fell into it themselves."
"The tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people who took part in this demonstration experienced that there is an impact, there is a reason to stand up for things or to stand against things, you can show strength, and if the government says or does something, it doesn't necessarily make it happen."
According to Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, Hungary revealed a different side this weekend, that of a country of solidarity, freedom and Europe.
According to Péter Magyar,** leader of the Tisza party, Orbán managed to render himself as the king of Pride in Europe, as "no one else has managed to mobilise such a large crowd for a demonstration against himself by inciting hatred and incitement."
Klára Dobrev, chair of the Democratic Coalition, believes the mass attendance is an indicator that people are fed up with Orbán's style of government.

AI image misrepresented as rally outside South Korean tech giant Samsung's headquarters

The image appearing to show scores of striking workers holding up placards demanding Samsung chairman Lee Jae-yong "join collective bargaining" was shared on Facebook on August 3, 2025. "Situation in front of Samsung HQ due to the yellow envelope bill," reads the image's Korean-language caption, referring to proposed amendments to South Korea's Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act that the ruling Democratic Party has . According to The Korea Times, the bill would broaden protections for workers and strengthen their right to take collective action, including an expanded definition of legitimate labour disputes (archived link). Business groups have criticised the bill, with a report in The Chosun Daily saying industry leaders had warned the proposed changes could escalate strikes, delay production, and force shutdowns (archived link). "The law hasn't even passed yet and these commies are already striking," read a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "They're taking part in Lee Jae Myung's plan to nationalise all businesses." But as of August 5, there have been no official reports of such a protest outside the . Hypothetical scenario A keyword search found the falsely shared image first appeared in a July 2025 report by South Korean outlet Edaily, which speculated on possible labour unrest if the yellow envelope bill were to become law (archived link). Old photo misrepresented as Lee Jae Myung's recent vacation

A post shared on Facebook on August 4, 2025 claimed the photo showed Lee and First Lady Kim Hye Kyung enjoying a holiday at the beach. Text seen in the screenshot reads: "The president is on vacation, Lee Jae Myung and first lady Kim Hye Kyung" and "Watersports are best when the country is flooded." The post surfaced as torrential rains triggered flooding and caused damage across parts of South Korea (archived link). Image Screenshot of the misleading Facebook post, captured August 4, 2025. Orange X added by AFP Other posts sharing the same image suggest it was taken as Lee is on summer leave from August 4 to 8 in the coastal South Gyeongsang province, South Korean newspaper Hankyoreh reported, citing the presidential office (archived link). "People are dying and this guy is photographed in a swimsuit, how can we call him our leader," reads one comment left in the post. Another comment reads, "The economy is dying and people are suffering but he chooses to take a swim." But the photo is old and does not show Lee on holiday in 2025. Combined reverse image and keyword searches show the same picture was posted to Lee's verified Facebook account on August 28, 2017 (archived link). Image Screenshot comparison between the photo shared with the misleading claim (left) and the original photo posted in August 2017 on Lee's Facebook page (right) In the caption, he wrote about filming for the reality show "Same Bed, Different Dreams," a program featuring celebrity couples which aired that month on SBS (archived link). A segment from the show available on YouTube shows Lee and Kim wearing the same swimsuits while surfing at the beach (archived link). At the time, Lee was serving as mayor of Seongnam, a city south of Seoul. Similar photos of the couple at the beach were also published in multiple local reports about the TV program at the time (archived here and here). Lee is a frequent target of disinformation online which AFP previously debunked multiple times.

Posts falsely claim to show footage of Ethiopian prime minister fleeing country after shooting

The post, published on Facebook on July 22, 2025, includes a video with text overlays in Amharic that translate to: 'Arat Kilo is in turmoil following the shooting of Abiy by one of his security guards.' Image Screenshot of the false post, taken on July 29, 2025 Arat Kilo is the location of the Ethiopian prime minister's office. The post has been shared more than 230 times. Another post shared by the same Facebook account a day later claims a 'secretly recorded video shows Abiy Ahmed fleeing the country with his wife following yesterday's protest'. Image Screenshot of the false post, taken on July 29, 2025 The post has been shared more than 140 times. The Facebook account spreading these claims is based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to information in the bio. The account regularly publishes posts on political developments in the Sidama region — one of Ethiopia's 12 regional states. Despite the end of the brutal two-year war in the northern region of Tigray in November 2022, Ethiopia is still plagued by conflict, including in the Oromia and Amhara regions. Oromia, Ethiopia's most populous region, has been dominated by an insurgency involving the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) since 2018, despite attempted peace talks that have failed (archived here). More recently, a local militia known as Fano was initially allied with the Ethiopian federal government before launching an armed rebellion in the Amhara region in April 2023 (archived here). The armed conflicts have posed major challenges for Abiy and his government. However, the videos do not show Abiy fleeing the country after being shot. Ethiopian cargo flight AFP Fact Check used the video verification tool InVID-WeVerify to conduct reverse image searches on keyframes from the video showing an aeroplane taking off at night. The results established that the video was first published on TikTok in 2021, with the caption that it shows an Ethiopian Airlines cargo Boeing 777 leaving for Liège in Belgium (archived here). An official statement issued in 2024 by Ethiopian Airlines confirms how the airports in Ethiopia and Liège have maintained a partnership for the transport of goods between Europe, Africa and the rest of the world for more than 17 years (archived here). Despite claims in the post that Abiy had fled the country following a protest in the capital on July 21, 2025, searches revealed there were no demonstrations in Addis Ababa on that day. We could not find the source of the second video, which appears to be user-generated content (UGC) -- meaning it was filmed by a bystander -- of police cars racing through a street, purportedly after Abiy was shot by a bodyguard. AFP Fact Check compared the images of the vehicles, some of them marked with the letters 'EFP' in yellow, and found they resemble the fleet used by the Ethiopian Federal Police. Image Screenshots of the false video (left) and matching image of vehicle from Ethiopian federal police official Facebook page We have reached out to the Ethiopian Federal Police for comment. The article will be updated accordingly. A keyword search confirmed that Abiy delivered a public speech at the World Food Systems event, co-hosted with Italy and held in Addis Ababa, on July 28, 2025 -- days after the posts were published (archived here). Notably, there are no credible media reports of Abiy being shot by one of his security guards, the day before he purportedly fled the country with his wife.
