Open-ocean swimming has many health benefits — and some risks

Denis Crean, a businessman and longtime swimming coach, has pursued his passion for open-water swimming in just about every kind of waterway.
He has overcome headwinds at Lake George in Upstate New York, traversed the Tampa Bay and negotiated tricky conditions during a 28-mile marathon swim around Manhattan. 'I remember watching the Empire State Building go by and thinking, 'Wow, we are going fast with the current,'' he said.

Lightning place Conor Sheary on waivers to terminate contract. Veleno also on waivers by Kraken

The Tampa Bay Lightning placed forward Conor Sheary on unconditional waivers on Sunday for the purpose to terminate his contract. The 10-year veteran was limited to playing just five games with the Lightning, and spent a majority of last season in the minors because of the team's salary cap constraints. The 33-year-old Sheary had one more year left on his three-year contract, and was due to make $2 million next season. Advertisement Sheary won Stanley Cups during each of his first two NHL seasons with Pittsburgh in 2016 and '17. He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent two years ago, and finished with four goals and 15 points in 62 games with the Lightning. He also played for Buffalo and Washington, and has 124 goals and 267 points in 593 games. Should he go unclaimed, Sheary will become an unrestricted free agent, with the NHL's signing period opening on Tuesday. The Seattle Kraken placed forward Joe Veleno on unconditional waivers for the purpose to buy out the final year of his contract, in which he was due to make $2.275 million. Advertisement Veleno has five seasons of NHL experience and was acquired by Seattle last week in a trade that sent forward Andre Burakovsky to Chicago. The 25-year-old Veleno spent his first four-plus NHL seasons in Detroit, and has 38 goals and 81 points in 306 games. ___ AP NHL:

Lightning still seeking trade partner for top prospect Isaac Howard

Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois confirmed at the end of the 2024-25 season that former first-round pick, Isaac Howard is unlikely to sign with the organization. Following the NHL Draft on Saturday, BriseBois confirmed trade talks are still ongoing, but they've yet to reach a deal that could work for both sides. 'It's tricky because the teams that are willing to offer me something, that I think would be worthwhile for our organization, that actually makes us better and kind of fit with the plan we have for our organization.. they haven't been able to agree to a contract with Isaac,' said BriseBois. 'The teams that he feels he can get a deal done with, have not been able to get a deal done with me.' Advertisement The Lightning were in contact with Howard's agent as recent as Friday before the draft began. While there was hope heading into the weekend that the Lightning could find an opportunity to trade Howard's rights, nothing ultimately developed. Under the NHL and NHLPA CBA, teams hold the rights to drafted NCAA prospects for four seasons. That means if the Lightning are not able to find a trade partner by Aug. 15, 2026, Howard will become an unrestricted free agent. If he does become an unrestricted free agent, the Bolts will only receive a second-round compensation pick in 2027. Since drafting Howard in the first round in 2022, the Lightning have invested in his development, as they do with all their prospects. Ideally, they're hoping for a return greater than just a second-round pick. 'I don't know how long this is going to take. We're perfectly comfortable waiting until the end,' said BriseBois. Advertisement 'We know worst case, we're getting a second round pick out of this. If I can do better, that would be optimal for me. It would be way better for Isaac Howard because he should turn pro. That's in his best interest for his career's development. We are working with them to try to get that done but, as of now, we have not been able to.' Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Breaks Records If 'Things Go Right' In 2025

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Breaks Records If 'Things Go Right' In 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht has given Baker Mayfield everything he needs to be successful in 2025. Advertisement The entire starting offensive line returns, he has a run game led by Bucky Irving and Rachaad White, plus Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, and tight end Cade Otton as his weapons. That's quite a collection of talent. For Fox Sports' Henry McKenna, in his "what could go right" scenario in 2025, Mayfield might just break records because of it. "This offense could be that good," McKenna writes. "Not only is Chris Godwin coming back from injury, but the Buccaneers have brought in Emeka Egbuka to add more firepower with Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan. Bucky Irving should only be better in Year 2. There's so much to like about the talent at every position on this offense." Let's have a look. Advertisement Last season, with missing Evans for a month, and Godwin after Week 7, Mayfield still threw for 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. Now with Godwin back, so too Evans, along with Egbuka and the expected improvement of McMillan, could Mayfield really get into record-breaking territory? Peyton Manning holds the record for most passing yards in a season (5,477) and touchdowns in a season (55). The touchdowns seem the most logical one to break, given he was only 14 away last season. But even then, it is a tall order. Plus, let's not forget how well Tampa Bay runs the football, so Irving and White will take some of the passing snaps as well, so factor that in. Advertisement Mayfield breaking records is a fun thought, and yes, he has the weapons to do it, but color us skeptical on him actually doing it. But if he did? My word, that would put an exclamation mark on his career resurgence.
