'What Balasaheb couldn't do, Devendra Fadnavis did': Raj Thackeray on reunion with Uddhav at joint rally in Mumbai
"Uddhav and I are coming together after 20 years… What Balasaheb Thackeray could not do, thousands others couldn't do, Devendra Fadnavis managed to do that," Raj Thackeray said in his speech in Marathi at the massive event in Worli.
The cousins' breakup had come while Bal Thackeray was alive, after he preferred his son Uddhav over Raj for Shiv Sena succession.
The reunion comes on the stated agenda of 'Marathi pride' – a plank that Bal Thackeray deployed to build his base – and in the immediate backdrop of charged statements and some hooliganism over alleged imposition of Hindi in the state.
'Why is Hindi being forced on children?' Raj said, referring to the BJP-led government's later-withdrawn decision to introduce Hindi as a third language in schools.
Uddhav in his speech after Raj said, 'When it comes to the question of language, Raj, I and everyone else here is united.'
'Yes, we are goons; if we have to be goons to get justice, we will do goondagiri,' Uddhav said emphatically, addressing charges about the Thackerays' men slapping and intimidating people, including street vendors, over their not speaking in Marathi.
'Our power on the street'
"Your power is in the legislature. We have power on the street," he added, taking credit for the rollback of the decision amid public pressure. 'The decision had been taken without consulting education experts. Just because you have power you wanted to force this,' added the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader.
He also spoke about migration from other states. 'Hindi-speaking states are economically backward. People are migrating from these states to non-Hindi-speaking states. Why has Hindi not helped them progress?' he added.
On the third-language row, he claimed, 'They just tested waters. Had this decision on Hindi been accepted quietly, the next step would have been an attempt to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra.'
Leaders of the two parties appeared overjoyed on the sidelines. 'After many years, this golden time has arrived, where today both Thackerays, who are well-established brands, are coming together, not because of politics, but for the sake of Maharashtra's honour,' said Anand Dubey, a leader of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), told ANI.

Pandharpur: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday took a dig at Shiv Sena-UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray, saying that he delivered a "rudali" (professional mourner) like speech at the joint rally. CM Fadnavis said Uddhav Thackeray's entire speech lacked mention of Marathi and focused on how his government was toppled, power and elections. "This was not a victory rally for Marathi, it was a Rudali. We have seen this Rudali at that place. Earlier, at the joint rally to celebrate the Maharashtra government withdrawing the two resolutions on the introduction of Hindi along with Marathi and English from grade one, Raj Thackeray said, "Maharashtra is bigger than any dispute and any fight. What Balasaheb Thackeray could not do, what many could not do... to bring us both together... Devendra Fadnavis was able to do." On the other hand, Uddhav Thackeray slammed the BJP for accusing him of leaving Hindutva, saying that he has not sacrificed Hindutva nor the resolve to fight for Marathi pride. "Hindutva is not the monopoly of any language. We, who speak authentic Marathi, are more patriotic Hindus than you," Uddhav Thackeray taunted.

Political temperature in poll-bound Bihar soared following the murder of Gopal Khemka, a prominent businessman and owner of Magadh Hospital, who was gunned down late Friday night by bike-borne assailants near his house in the Gandhi Maidan area in Patna. Barely a few hours before Khemka's killing, in a separate incident, three people were killed and two others injured in a violent clash between two groups in Siwan. These killings gave ammunition to the RJD-led Opposition Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) which targeted the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government, alleging that there has been 'a surge in lawlessness across Bihar under the Nitish government'. Bihar is headed to the Assembly polls in October-November this year, which gave urgency to the Opposition's attack while putting the NDA dispensation on the defensive. Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav questioned how could such a high-profile murder occur near a police station in the state capital. 'A prominent businessman in Patna has been shot dead just a few steps away from the police station! Every month, hundreds of traders are being killed in Bihar, but we still can't call it 'jungle raj'? Because this is what the scriptures call media management, perception management, and image management,' Tejashwi alleged in a social media post. Independent MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who is associated with the Congress, said in an X post: 'No one is safe… Criminals are being protected by the current NDA government in the state. Nitish ji, please spare Bihar.' BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma, however, said, 'The police are actively working on this case. Whoever is responsible won't go unpunished.' The panel has been given three months to study the issue and prepare a report.
