The attendance for that match set a record for a football game in Hong Kong, as did the festival's other contest, between
Liverpool and AC Milan . Both enjoyed crowds just short of the 50,000 capacity. Kai Tak Sports Park passed a major test, with fans dispersing smoothly after each game. The turnout for the open training sessions particularly impressed the visiting clubs: a total of almost 60,000. The two friendly matches were competitive as the teams, full of stars, prepared for the season ahead. The fans created a vibrant atmosphere.
Hong Kong supporters are generally civilised and sporting. The festival was no exception. Many were experiencing a top-level football match for the first time. The efforts of all four teams were appreciated. The stadium was variously described by visiting players and managers as 'fantastic', 'incredible' and a
'game changer' . There was just a little
criticism of the quality of the playing surface. That should receive attention.
But the clubs also clearly enjoyed being in Hong Kong and welcomed the opportunity to connect with their passionate fans in the city, along with an estimated 40,000 who were visiting. The festival went beyond the two games, with events including meet-and-greets and engagement with famous former players.
There were sales of club merchandise, and restaurants near the stadium reported a significant lift in takings, which is most welcome when the sector is struggling.

‘No limit' on how many Hong Kong teams can enter National Games, top official says
The saga surrounding the decision over which Hong Kong teams could compete at the National Games has been completely resolved, top government officials revealed on Saturday. Manda Chan Wing-man, director of Leisure and Cultural Services, said new criteria had been 'agreed and passed', adding that local National Sports Associations were now satisfied with the changes. A row had previously broken out over the decision by the city's organising committee that only sports whose teams finished in the top eight at either the Paris Olympics last year or the Asian Games in 2023 could enter multiple sides in team events not being staged in Hong Kong. 'There is no longer a requirement for the sport to have reached the top eight,' Chan said. 'The NSAs are all very satisfied now. They will now put their teams forward according to [China's] arrangements and timeline.' Speaking to the Post after the 100-day National Games countdown ceremony at the Velodrome in Tseung Kwan O, Chan also confirmed there was 'no limit' on the number of teams for each sport. After the Hong Kong Football Festival finished on Thursday, the city's attention has turned the major role it will play in staging the 2025 National Games. Saturday marked 100 days until the multi-sports bonanza starts on November 9, with eight competition events being hosted in Hong Kong. Yeung Tak-keung, head of the city's National Games Coordination Office, has acknowledged that potential success on home soil was a factor determining which sports would come to the city. 'One of the considerations is the competitiveness of our athletes,' Yeung said. He identified fencing, rugby sevens, golf and track cycling as likely sources for Hong Kong medals. Hong Kong ready to co-host National Games, John Lee says 100 days before launch
Hong Kong is ready to co-host the National Games and will focus on refining services and optimising sports events set to be held locally, the city's leader has said in the 100-day run-up to the contest's opening in November. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Saturday also said that all eight host venues for major competitions would finish their final rehearsals in the next few months, with organisers to focus on enhancing security and hospitality, among other areas. 'Hong Kong will give full play to its international and professional advantages to contribute to the country's efforts in becoming a powerful sports nation through professional teamwork, rigorous event organisation and humanised service details,' he said. 'Hong Kong will also use the Games to further develop the sports industry within the Greater Bay Area , promote youth sports exchange and allow more residents, including those with disabilities, to enjoy sports.' Lee officiated at a ceremony marking 100 days until the launch of the National Games on Saturday. The city leader was joined by Beijing's liaison chief in Hong Kong, Zhou Ji, sports minister Rosanna Law Shuk-pui and Yeung Tak-keung, the head of the city's National Games Coordination Office, at the Hong Kong Velodrome Park. The Games, which will run from November 9 to 21, will feature more than 400 events across 34 sports. The competitions will be co-hosted by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau.
