Cam Ward gives blunt assessment of ‘very mid' Titans offense

New York Post2 days ago
Cam Ward isn't sugarcoating the state of the Titans' offense.
'I just think we're very mid right now,' the rookie quarterback told reporters after Wednesday's training camp practice. 'From my position, to up front, to the receiver position, but, at the end of the day, it all starts with me.'
Ward, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is expected to start the season as Tennessee's starting quarterback.
'I just don't think we're where we need to be. But we've got a little bit of time. Every day we get better as a whole. We're a young team. But that's no excuse.'
It's been a tough week at training camp for Ward, who has thrown four interceptions in the two practices since pads came on.

'I have to get on the same page with my receivers, watch more film, and be more accurate with the football,' Ward added.
That marks a significant shift in tone from last week, when Ward said the Titans were 'capable of being one of the best offenses in the league.'
Tennessee secured the top pick by posting a league-worst 3-14 record last season, but Ward's addition to the roster has those around the organization hopeful for an instant improvement.
The 23-year-old will have wide receivers Calvin Ridley, Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson as his three primary targets, along with tight end Chig Okonkwo.

Ward, a 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist, had an outstanding senior season at Miami in which he led the nation in passing touchdowns (39), yards per pass attempt (9.5) and yards per completion (14.1).
Before that, the West Columbia, Texas native played college football at Incarnate Word (2020-21) and Washington State (2021-23).
Despite the quarterback's struggles in training camp, Titans coach Brian Callahan said before Wednesday's practice that he had full confidence that Ward would bounce back.
'It's just sort of how he's wired,' Callahan said. 'I feel really good about how he'll respond to any negativity in general.'
The Titans open the season on the road against the Broncos on Sept. 7.

Rory McIlroy lone omission from FedEx St. Jude commitment list

The field for next week's playoff opener in Memphis will have one fewer competitor than expected. Rory McIlroy will not play. The PGA Tour released Friday the commitment list for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which is reserved for the top 70 players in points following the Wyndham Championship. McIlroy currently ranks second in the FedExCup, so he's mathematically clinched his position in the 30-man Tour Championship, let alone the 50-man BMW Championship. With McIlroy's omission, 69 players will compete at TPC Southwind starting on Thursday. There are no alternates for playoff events. The final few spots will be finalized after the Wyndham, with the expectation of a couple players moving in and out of the top 70. McIlroy finished second-to-last at last year's playoff opener in Memphis, which came after his T-3 the previous season. This will be the fourth notable tournament McIlroy has skipped this season, following signature events The Sentry, RBC Heritage and Memorial Tournament. Despite having not teed it up since The Open and logging just 14 starts this season, McIlroy is set to collect $10 million on Sunday evening, $6 million via the Comcast Business Tour Top 10 and another $4 million from the restructured FedExCup bonus payout.
