First Look
Lots of power, lots of tech, but crucially... lots of orange. Welcome to AMG's future Skip 24 photos in the image carousel and continue reading
This is the Concept AMG GT XX. It's a sleek four door that presages AMG's first standalone electric model (if we skip over 2013's SLS Electric Drive, of which only nine were made), due on sale some time next year to spearhead a much needed Mercedes revival.
The brand that invented the motor car has fumbled its way into the electrical age, suffering lacklustre demand for its pebble-smooth EQ-badged offerings. Long binned is the plan to be all-electric by 2030, but a hangover from that optimistic moment underpins the GT XX. It rests on AMG's bespoke EV platform, which mixes steel, aluminium and carbon composites. It will also underpin a Ferrari Purosangue-rivalling SUV and – hopefully – a new hypercar.

Mercedes junked plans for another electric-only platform designed purely for luxury cars, so weirdly, the GT XX is already adrift and from a bygone age when a combustion revival seemed even less likely than Elon Musk becoming a pariah.
The GT XX also looks sort of familiar. There are shades of 2022's Vision AMG concept, and more than an echo of the following year's more extrovert Vision One-Eleven. This mashes them together while also evoking the late 1960s Mercedes C111 showstopper. Its Sunset Beam orange paint, electroluminescent rocker panel and flamboyantly raked windscreen tick all the right conceptual boxes. You might like
What's more, this is a pretty accurate preview of a car you'll actually be able to buy. Think of it as an electrified replacement for the current GT 4dr and you're on the right lines. The Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air may have beaten it to the punch, but it's here now, and we like the fact that it has six circular rear lights rather than the currently modish light bar. It's oddly old-school.
At 5.2m, it's also imposing. There's a graphic contrast between the main body and the lower rocker panel which uses that clever electroluminescent paint to display the car's state of charge. The AMG nose is loud and proud, heavy on the concepty attitude. The headlights are also vertically stacked and a visual departure. They have integrated loudspeakers, with a passive membrane for improved low frequency response. They're primarily for pedestrian protection, but might have other applications. AMG is acutely aware that the bass thunder emitted by its V8s is a core USP. When it comes to its BEVs, it surely has something up its sleeve.

There are an array of cooling ducts in the bonnet. They're functional but also stop the car from looking too soapy. We like the power domes, something of a combustion era callback. The AMG GT XX is also phenomenally aero efficient – its drag coefficient is just 0.20. The front splitter wraps around into a side air curtain, and underfloor vanes reduce lift. AMG's active air control panel reappears here to optimise cooling. There's also a pop-up rear air brake. As well as those rear lights, there's a light panel that features 700 programmable RGB (red, green and blue) LEDs. Mercedes says it can show a variety of 'content'. More content: just what the world needs.
The concept car also uses an active 21in aero wheel, with five movable blades monitored by a central control unit with an actuator in the wheel hub. If the brakes need additional cooling, the blades move. There's more cleverness – each actuator uses a tiny generator to capture electrical energy from the wheel. It's not production ready, unfortunately.
But the big story is what lies beneath. An overall power output of one megawatt (that's about 1,340bhp) is certainly eye catching, but so too is the GT XX's ability to charge at up to 850kW. That means it can hose around 250 miles of range into its batteries in just five minutes. 'Drive hard, charge hard' is the new mantra. If Mercedes-AMG has been found wanting so far in the race to master software defined, fully electric cars, the GT XX aims to reposition the company right at the pointy end.
How so? Well, the new car uses an 800V architecture and axial flux motors, which are two thirds lighter than radial flux ones and take up a third of the space. There are three motors, packaged into two 'High Performance Electric Drive Units', to use Mercedes lingo. The rear mounted unit weighs 140kg and integrates two motors, along with a planetary gearset and a silicon carbide inverter, in a single oil-cooled casing. Up front, the other 80kg drive unit contains a motor, spur gear transmission and an inverter. The rear EDU does most of the work, the front one only coming into play when more torque or additional traction is demanded. It's decoupled the rest of the time to increase efficiency.

You can thank British specialist Yasa, which Mercedes bought in 2021, for all of this. The motors will be made in a Mercedes facility on the outskirts of Berlin, and require 100 separate production processes. Mercedes says 65 of these are new to the company, and there are patents pending on 30. New forms of laser welding are being used, as well as – but of course – AI.
We'll have to wait for more details, but Merc claims a top speed of more than 223mph and 0-124mph in five seconds. That's Koenigsegg Jesko territory. Beyond confirming the presence of its 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, there's no word yet on how the system will vector all that grunt. But as this is AMG we're talking about here we can expect an army of drive settings and some algorithmic magic. A tyre-melting drift mode is surely on the agenda.
Then there's the GT XX's underfloor battery pack. The cells are tall and skinny, shortening the distance from the core to the casing and allowing heat to dissipate much more rapidly under load. The individual cells are housed in laser welded aluminium, so they're lighter than steel and have better conductivity. There are more than 3,000 of them, packaged in plastic modules and cooled using an electrically non-conductive oil. The cooling process is on demand, each cell module perfectly primed so there's no dropoff in performance.
how fast you can charge a car is just as important as how fast or how far you can drive it
We know what you're thinking – charging points that can ram electrons in at 850kW are currently nonexistent, but Mercedes-AMG has a cunning plan. It has partnered with Alpitronic, a specialist in high power charging, to devise the next-gen infrastructure. The company has developed a prototype that can handle that amount of energy using a standard CCS cable. The target is for them to build chargers that can do one megawatt, AMG says. As things stand, the GT XX will charge immediately at 350kW, regardless of the battery's state of charge or temperature, and will continue to charge that rapidly above 80 per cent. This could be a major turning point: how fast you can charge a car is just as important as how fast or how far you can drive it.
Inside? The guiding precept is to make technology visible, while emphasising efficiency and lightweight construction. The interior layout suggests a traditional engine bay, and features an extruded crossbeam structure. High voltage cables are dotted around to remind you that this isn't actually combustion-engined. The stripped look is heightened by the front seats. The shells are carbon fibre, the pads 3D printed and made of a biotech material called Labfiber that upcycles used racing tyres and features vegetable proteins in its composition. One tyre equates to four square metres of this leather-look material. TopGear.com got to have a lengthy feel and it does a convincing impression of leather.
The base colour is black so silver and orange elements really pop. There's a 'shrink lacquer' crackle finish on the centre console and elsewhere. Fabric loops rather than handles open doors, and there are chequered flag patterns on the door cards.
The wheel is similar to the AMG One's, a cut down rectangular yoke inspired by Formula One. Mercedes has confirmed this is production-ready and it's connected to a steer-by-wire system with no physical metal between your hands and the front tyres. Remember the old days, when thundering V8 AMGs refused to go in a straight line? Now computers are supposed to take care of that for us.
Inevitably, the real thing will tone down the more extreme design flourishes. But the stuff underneath, that's all locked in for mass production. Maybe the v2.0 Mercedes-AMG electric plan will be the one that lands.

Popular brand to recall nearly 200,000 vehicles over 'trapped' fears

A popular car manufacturer is urging drivers to take their vehicle to back to the dealership to fix an issue that could otherwise result in passengers getting 'trapped' inside the car Thousands of passengers risk being 'trapped' in their car due to a common fault, experts have warned. Some of the world's most popular car brands including Honda, Ford, and Mercedes recently announced the recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a range of serious safety concerns. All of the recalls have been issued in the United States, collectively affecting more than 850,000 vehicles in total, with a variety of mechanical and electronic issues identified that increase the likelihood of crashes and other hazardous situations — but only if they remain on the road without being repaired. ‌ It is always of the utmost importance to address potential safety defects in vehicles promptly to protect not just yourself, but everyone on the road. If you're concerned your car may be impacted, it's best to contact your local dealership. ‌ Honda The American Honda Motor Company is recalling around 260,000 vehicles in the States due to concerns that a brake pedal could shift out of position, which would prevent the driver from being able to apply the brakes. If this were to happen, the vehicles would fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards related to lighting and brake systems. The recall affects certain Acura TLX (2021-2025), Acura MDX (2023-2025) and Honda Pilot (2023-2025) models. Honda plans to notify owners by mail around July 28, 2025, with instructions on how to have their vehicles inspected and repaired as needed. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz has also issued a significant recall, affecting almost 92,000 vehicles. The issue centres on the C-pillar, which may not absorb enough impact in the event of a crash. In the event of an accident, the rear occupant's head could come into contact with the C-pillar, potentially causing catastrophic harm. The recall covers certain 2023-2025 GLC 300, GLC 300 4MATIC, 2024-2025 AMG GLC 43 4MATIC, 2025 GLC 350E 4MATIC and AMG GLC 63 S E vehicles equipped with a panoramic sunroof. Mercedes-Benz has instructed dealers to modify the roof lining of affected vehicles to address the problem. ‌ Ford Ford has registered documents with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicating that over 500,000 of its vehicles are being recalled for various issues. The largest of these recalls involves certain Aviator and Explorer models manufactured between 2020 and 2025, with 304,662 units affected. The main concern is that the second-row seats in these vehicles could move unexpectedly, which may prevent them from properly restraining occupants during a crash. This could significantly increase the risk of injury. Ford dealers will inspect the second-row seat switch and, if necessary, replace the bezel around the switch. ‌ Another major issue for Ford involves nearly 200,000 Mustang Mach E vehicles produced between 2021 and 2025. If these vehicles have a low battery charge, the electronic door latches may remain locked after the driver or front passenger exits and shuts the door. This could result in a situation where a person in the back seat is unable to use the inside door release handles to exit the vehicle. The NHTSA warned that this defect could 'possibly trap someone who is unable to use the inside door release handles, such as a child in the back seat'. Ford has therefore advised owners to bring their vehicles to dealerships, where the necessary software updates will be provided free of charge. Notification letters were scheduled to be sent to owners by June 23, 2025, with a follow-up letter planned when the fix becomes available, which is expected by September 29. Although Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this problem, the company has provided guidance for drivers to recognise warning signs. These include a 'system off to save power' alert or a blank SYNC screen after turning off the vehicle. In these cases, drivers may need to pull the inside release handles more forcefully than usual to exit through the front door. These recalls highlight ongoing safety concerns in the automotive industry and the importance of prompt action by manufacturers to address potential risks to drivers and passengers. All repairs related to these recalls will be carried out free of charge.

Mercedes-AMG Rivals Should Fear the Specs of the Radical Concept GT XX

The EV four-door race has begun The competition in the world of high-performance electric sedans is heating up, and two of its hottest competitors cannot be any more different from each other. In the blue corner is the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. When it debuted, the Porsche's hardcore 1,093 horsepower super electric sedan achieved a record-setting lap time around the Nürburgring. However, in the red corner is the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, the first high-performance vehicle from an emerging Chinese consumer electronics giant-turned EV powerhouse. Despite being a fraction of the Porsche's price, Xiaomi's SU7 Ultra managed to pack more power and beat not only the Porsche on the Nordschleife, but also vehicles costing upwards of seven figures. Now, Mercedes-AMG has an answer to both. In the past, it shoehorned lots of horsepower under the hood of luxurious Mercedes-branded vehicles, but recently, it turned a heel toward electrification. The culmination of this is showcased in what it calls the Concept AMG GT XX. The EV from Affalterbach In an announcement on June 25, Mercedes-AMG virtually unveiled its latest creation, a fastback-styled high-performance electric sedan called the Concept AMG GT XX. According to the boffins at Affalterbach, the concept is meant to preview the first vehicle built on its dedicated, AMG-specific AMG Electric Architecture ( ) EV platform. Underneath its skin, the GT XX's advanced electric platform features an 800-volt architecture capable of high performance even while charging. AMG says that the GT XX is powered by a bespoke NCMA battery pack that uses Formula 1 technology and features direct-cooled cylindrical battery cells for better heat management. Additionally, it can be charged up to add nearly 250 miles (400 km) of range in about five minutes at 850 kW. Power goes to all four wheels through two electric drive units (EDUs), which together contain three axial-flux electric motors: two located at the rear and one at the front. All together, the trio of motors makes for a top speed of 223 miles per hour and a combined 1,340 horsepower, which is about 247 more than the Porsche's output of 1,093 horsepower, but still short of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra's 1,548 horsepower. AMG says that these oil-cooled electric motors are efficiently integrated within the EDUs, and each is equipped with its own planetary gearset and water-cooled inverter. Mercedes describes these EDUs working together as an all-wheel-drive system featuring torque vectoring and full-on disengagement that operates in accordance with driving conditions. The rear motors serve as the car's primary power source, while the front EDU disengages during coasting and low-speed cruising to optimize efficiency. A unique, but aerodynamic face From the pictures, the CONCEPT AMG GT XX is a striking sports car design that combines a few unique design languages to turn heads with its fastback shape, low hood, and sleek windshield, all highlighted by a vibrant sunset beam orange finish. From the front, the GT XX features a flat and wide profile signature and distinctive Mercedes design cues like its oversized grille with an integrated Mercedes star, as well as motorsport-inspired details, like air outlets in the hood to optimize airflow and a prominent front splitter that enhances aerodynamics. The side profile looks eerily similar to Xiaomi's SU7 from certain angles, and the rear is defined by a triple set of circular taillamps, a wide carbon diffuser, and an active airbrake. Source: Mercedes-Benz The Concept AMG GT XX even has speakers in its headlights, which pump out ambient driving sounds to keep pedestrians aware of its presence and enhance the driving experience. Despite its funny looks, AMG says that the GT XX is very aerodynamic. It claims a drag coefficient of 0.198, which makes it more aerodynamic than the limited edition AMG ONE and Tesla Model S, and is close to other contemporary EVs like the Xiaomi SU7 and the Lucid Air. AMG claims that the secret to the magic number is aerodynamic retractable wheel covers. These covers consist of five carbon-fiber panels that form a star shape and move outward and retract electrically as needed for brake cooling or optimal airflow. Inside, the AMG GT XX features carbon fiber bucket seats with racing harnesses and custom cushioning that can be made from a customer's body scan for optimum bolstering. To keep with the theme of efficiency, the textiles used in the interior are made with worn GT3 race tires, while hints of orange add a pop of color to the otherwise dark cabin. Like with most EVs, a large dual-tablet display is the centrepiece in front of the driver, and an F1-style yoke steering wheel with twistable selectors and paddle shifters adds more racing flair. Final thoughts Mercedes-AMG has not released any details on when a production version of the AMG GT XX will be released, but it is expected that many of the details will be incorporated into the final version for series production. In its statement about the car, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe defended that the car 'is a true AMG with every fiber of its being,' adding that 'the heart of an AMG was always the motor, and that will remain so with our in-house electric architecture.' Though it may be a tough sell to AMG loyalists, the Concept GT XX shows that Affalterbach is primed and ready to play ball in any game it can get in on, even if it includes electrons. BMW Isn't Going to Like the Audi A5's New Tech and Overhauled Steering

Where the 2025 Audi pulls ahead of the BMW 3 Series BMW's 3 Series, starting at $45,950, entered its 2025 production year with minor design and tech tweaks while maintaining its reputation for solid driving dynamics. However, the 2025 Audi A5 gives the 3 Series a run for its money, with tech updates not present in its BMW counterpart, along with refreshed steering and suspension that address former criticisms of its driving characteristics, such as understeer. Audi reveals sporty new A5/S5 with an emphasis on design Watch More The Audi A5, starting at $49,700, adds an available 10.9-inch passenger display that you won't find in the 3 series. When a passenger uses the display for something like entertainment, the screen initiates Active Privacy Mode, shielding it from the driver via a digital curtain utilizing shutter tech and dedicated illumination profiles that direct light toward the user. Additionally, unlike its BMW rival, the 2025 A5 features an optional LED strip spanning the width of the vehicle's dashboard that provides visual cues confirming functions, such as door locking and unlocking, turn signal operation, and more. Regarding steering and suspension, A5 drivers can expect a more neutral and engaging road feel, which reduces understeer and facilitates more dynamic handling—something that previous production years fell short of compared to the 3 Series. The A5 puts up a fight in the areas that matter most Since the A5's 2021 production year, Audi has made all-wheel drive (AWD) standard across the model's lineup, and 2025 is no different. Alternatively, AWD, or xDrive, is optional on the 2025 BMW 3 Series models. While a 2025 3 Series starts at $45,950 for a rear-wheel drive (RWD) version, the starting price you'll pay jumps to $47,950 for an xDrive 330i. You'll also receive slightly more power in a base A5 than in a 3 Series. This Audi produces 261 standard horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, whereas its competitor offers 255 standard horsepower and the same amount of torque. You'll receive an 8-speed automatic transmission within this BMW, but some may prefer the A5's 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Regarding fuel economy, the A5 offers 26 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway with its base version, remaining competitive against the entry-level 3 Series, which achieves 28/35 MPG in the city and on the highway, respectively. Drivers prioritizing a spacious trunk will appreciate the 2025 A5's 26 cubic feet of cargo room, which easily surpasses the 3 Series' 17 cubic feet of trunk capacity. The 3 Series offers slightly higher passenger volume at 94 cu ft, compared to the A5's 91 cu ft, but the A5 is nearly equivalent in key areas, such as rear passenger legroom. Both models feature sharp exterior designs, with the A5 sporting a sleeker profile and the 3 Series leaning more toward traditional sedan styling. You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. Final thoughts The 2025 A5 and 3 Series are neck-and-neck in many ways, but there's an argument to be made that this Audi brings more to the table than its BMW rival. Audi's A5 features innovative technology not found in the 3 Series, including an optional passenger display that won't distract the driver. The A5's LED strip across the dashboard, which indicates vehicle functions such as door locking and unlocking, further enhances the interior's innovative and fresh feel. Additionally, the A5 maintains competitive fuel economy, features a roomy trunk, and updates its suspension and steering to address past criticisms, such as understeer. You can't go wrong with a 2025 3 Series, but the 2025 A5 warrants plenty of consideration. About the Author Cody Carlson View Profile
