Nashik Rural police said in May last year, a farmer Suraj Kale of Takli Vinchur, Lasalgaon in Niphad taluka, received an unknown call.
The caller said he was speaking from a branch of FedX in Mumbai and told Kale that their department had received a parcel on latter's name, the police said, adding that the parcel contained four Iranian passports and drugs.
The fraudster subsequently called via Skype, in a police uniform, on the pretext of verifying bank account. He took Kale's bank details and secured a loan of Rs 10 lakh. He then transferred the money to another bank account.
Following this, Kale filed a complaint with the cybercrime branch of the Nashik Rural police. A team, led by inspector Nagesh Mohite, including constable Suvarna Ahire of the cybercrime traced the money to another account where Rs 10 lakh was transferred and froze it.
However, by the time police froze the account, the cybercrook managed to transfer Rs 6.8 lakh to yet another account. The police completed the legal procedure and retrieved Rs 3.2 lakh. Senior officers of the cybercrime police said efforts are underway to trace the conmen.

Woman seeking help for medical treatment falls prey to online scam
UDUPI: A woman battling cancer fell victim to an online fraud after she sought financial assistance through social media. She allegedly lost Rs 30,000 after a fraudster, posing as a representative from a religious mutt, tricked her into transferring money. In a complaint, she stated that due to high treatment expenses, she appealed for financial help by sharing her bank account details on WhatsApp and Facebook. On July 1, around 10:00 AM, while she was at home, she received a phone call from a person speaking in Kannada, claiming to be calling on behalf of Swamiji from the Mantralaya Raghavendra Swamy Mutt. The caller said they were instructed by the Udupi Krishna Mutt to offer her financial aid of Rs 2.90 lakh. However, he told her she would need to first pay Rs 29,900 as tax. Trusting the caller, the complainant transferred the said amount via PhonePe to the number provided, and the remaining Rs 4,000 in two instalments of Rs 2,000 each using the PhonePe scanner. The accused then told her that the amount would be credited to her account by 11:45 AM and asked her to call him immediately afterward. However, the money never arrived in her account, she alleged Based on her complaint that she was deceived with a false promise of financial assistance, a case was registered at the Malpe Police Station under Sections 318(4) and 112 of the BNS 2023, and Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act.

58 quintals of rice seized in Karnataka's Ajekar; accused flees during raid
Representative Image UDUPI: Officials seized over 58 quintals of rice meant for the govt's Anna Bhagya scheme from a godown in Ajekar on Wednesday. In a complaint, Sumathi, Food Inspector of Karkala Taluk, stated that Manjunath allegedly procured rice meant for the govt's Anna Bhagya scheme from the public and was illegally storing it. Acting on the complaint, Ajekar Police Station PSI Shubhakara and his team conducted a raid at a godown located to the right of Manoj Traders, near Ram Mandir on Ajekar Main Road in Marne village. During the raid, they found rice stored in 151 plastic bags and 14 gunny sacks. Upon inspection, the seized rice was confirmed to be 58 quintals and 40 kilograms from the govt's Anna Bhagya scheme. The rice, estimated to be worth Rs 1.34 lakh, was taken into custody. At the time of the raid, the accused Manjunath fled the scene. It is alleged that he purchased the subsidised govt rice from the public at lower prices with the intent to resell it illegally. A case was registered at the Ajekar Police Station under Sections 3, 6, and 7 of the Essential Commodities Act.
