ANI "If Basavanna's principles are followed, all our problems can be resolved": Former Karnataka CM Bommai
Forces that promote violence in the name of religion have emerged, and if the 12th-century social reformer Basavanna's principles are followed, solutions to all their problems can be found, said former Karnataka Chief Minister and MP Basavaraj Bommai. He was speaking while presiding over the Basava Jayanthi celebration and the Basavashree and Vachana Sahitya Shree awards ceremony organized by Basava Vedike at Ravindra Kalakshetra. He described Basavanna as a "wonderful personality."
He said, "If someone claims to have completely understood Basavanna, it means they have yet to attain true understanding. Basavanna was relevant in his time and remains relevant today. In one dimension, he spoke about the then-existing realities, and in another, he spoke against inequality and discrimination--issues that still persist, which is not something to feel proud about. When we look at what is happening in society today, it shows how much respect we have truly given to Basavanna's thoughts.""There are three types of people in society," Bommai said. "Some talk only about the past and ignore reality. The second are revolutionaries--like the Sharana movement, the freedom struggle, and the Russian Revolution. They did not last long because we failed to carry forward their systems. We call Basavanna a revolutionary, but we must also ask what became of the revolution he started"."The third are reformers--like Buddha, Basava, and Mahavira. They transcend time. We belong to a history enriched by such great personalities. But if we live only in the temporary world without realising this, we fail to understand our deeper roots", Bommai noted.
He illustrated this with a metaphor: "Next to a well, there was a stream. The stream claimed superiority by saying it flowed and provided water to everyone, while the well just stood still. To this, the well replied that even though it stays in one place, it serves people in times of hardship. Similarly, Vachana literature is as valuable as any Vedas or Puranas--it is accessible and understandable even to common people."Bommai reiterated Basavanna's quote: "Compassion is the root of religion." Yet, despite this, forces promoting violence in the name of religion have emerged. "Even with so much happening around us, we feel helpless. But we shouldn't feel that way. We must read and promote Basava literature and establish peace. Let there be victory to human dharma as preached by Renukacharya. We have forgotten our roots. If we hold on to Basavanna, we will find solutions to all our problems," he said.He said that only when Basava Jayanthi is celebrated in every Dalit colony of the land will the state see true progress. Major changes in the world weren't made by governments or great powers, but by individuals--Einstein, Buddha, Prophet Muhammad, Basavanna."They were all great people. In life, sacrifice alone isn't enough. Realization comes only when one shares the deepest truths of the heart. When Swami Vivekananda said he had attained enlightenment, his guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa told him, 'You will attain enlightenment only when your knowledge is shared with the world.' Following that advice, Vivekananda shared his knowledge with the world," he said.
He also said, "The writings of Nadoja G.R. Channabasappa are a great treasure. We must use his knowledge and strength."
The MP said Industries Minister M.B. Patil has a bright future ahead. The state's future should be linked to his. "You are serving F.G. Halakatti. A politician thinks about the next election, but a statesman thinks about the next generation. You are acting as a statesman, working for the benefit of the next generation," Bommai added.
The event was graced by the divine presence of Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, head of Adichunchanagiri Math. Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna, Industries Minister M.B. Patil, Basava Vedike President Dr. C. Somashekara, and Vice President Shadakshari were also present. On the occasion, senior writer G.R. Channabasappa was honoured with the Basavashree Award, while M.D. Pallavi and the Vachana Pitamaha F.G. Halakatti Research Foundation of B.L.D.E. Institute were honoured with the Vachana Sahitya Shree Award.

‘Bogus votes were created': DK Shivakumar backs Rahul Gandhi's claims against EC in Karnataka

'We conducted research in many booths of Karnataka, especially in the urban sectors, where we found that votes were shifted there from various places without any proper documents. All bogus votes were created… We will present this evidence to the election commission. Whether they agree or not, that's a different issue. We will present it in front of the people too… A very big injustice has been given to those assembly segments. Our constituencies have been affected with this…. I stand by his statement,' DK Shivakumar said. Speaking to ANI, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister stated that Congress party has conducted research in many booths and found that votes were shifted 'without' any proper documents. New Delhi: Extending his support to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's allegations against the Election Commission in Karnataka, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Saturday said that bogus votes were found in several urban booths across the state and the matter would be brought to the notice of the public and the poll body. His statement came after Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of indulging in 'cheating' during the voter list revision process in a Karnataka constituency. On July 24, Gandhi claimed to have '100 per cent' proof of the alleged manipulation, which involves adding and deleting voters, but hasn't presented any evidence yet. He alleged that thousands of new voters aged 50, 60, and 65 have been added to the list in a single constituency and eligible voters above 18 have been removed from the list. 'Today we have 100 per cent proof of Election Commission allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka. When we decide to show it to you, it is 100 per cent proof. We just looked at one constituency and we found this. I am absolutely convinced that constituency after constituency this is the drama. Thousands of new votes, aged 50 or 60, 65 (are there) in one constituency. Then voter deletion, people who are way above 18,' he said. The opposition parties, including Congress and Samajwadi Party, have been protesting against the SIR exercise, alleging that it's an attempt to disenfranchise voters, particularly from marginalised communities. They claim that the process is being used to remove names from the voters' list, which could impact the outcome of upcoming assembly elections. This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Fresh Alliance Twist In Bihar? Pappu Yadav Says Chirag Paswan, Prashant Kishor Have ‘Joined Hands'

Ahead of Bihar elections, Pappu Yadav claimed Chirag Paswan and Prashant Kishor have joined hands. Ahead of the Bihar state assembly elections, Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav on Sunday claimed that Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan and Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) chief Prashant Kishor have joined hands for the polls. While speaking to the reporters, the Purnia MP said that Kishor should declare Paswan as the Chief Ministerial candidate. Pappu Yadav further said that if Paswan does not feel to stay with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he would welcome him. 'Chirag Paswan and Prashant Kishor have joined hands. Prashant Kishor should announce Chirag Paswan as the Chief Minister… Everyone knows that if they win even a few seats, it will cause trouble for the JDU and trouble for Nitish ji. If Chirag ji doesn't like it there, we will welcome him," he said as quoted by news agency ANI. #WATCH | Patna, Bihar: Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, says, 'Chirag Paswan and Prashant Kishor have joined hands. Prashant Kishor should announce Chirag Paswan as the Chief Minister… Everyone knows that if they win even a few seats, it will cause trouble for JDU,… — ANI (@ANI) July 27, 2025 The Purnia MP's remarks came a day after Paswan lashed out his ally Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state saying that he feels 'sad and ashamed to support" the government under the current situation. With elections in Bihar looming later this year, Chirag's blunt criticism has caused ripples within the ruling alliance. While speaking to the reporters in Patna, the Union Minister expressed anguish and accused its ally government of failing to curtail the rising crime rate. 'I feel sad that I am supporting such a government here. It is imperative to control it, or else the consequences will be very bad," he said as quoted by news agency ANI. With assembly elections approaching, Paswan acknowledged the possibility of crimes being orchestrated to defame the government. However, he emphasised that it is still the administration's responsibility to maintain law and order. 'I have heard claims that the recent spurt in violent crimes is linked to the upcoming assembly polls, and there are attempts to defame this government. Still, it is the responsibility of the administration to keep law and order under control," he added. He further attacked the government and said, 'Either the administration is in collusion with it or the administration has become completely useless and now it is beyond their power to keep Bihar and Biharis safe." Amid the criticism, Union Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi urged Chirag Paswan to remain with the NDA and work to strengthen it. 'We are in NDA. We have to help NDA. We wish him all the best. He should strengthen the NDA," said Manjhi. Referring to Paswan's approach during the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Manjhi said, 'If he does not adopt the 2020 policy, it will be a very good thing." Earlier, Prashant Kishor had reiterated that Jan Suraaj would not field any 'baahubalis" or candidates with questionable backgrounds. " There is no place for any 'Baahubali' in Jan Suraaj, be it gun, money, liquor, sand or political 'Baahubali'. The children of common people will contest in Jan Suraaj," Kishor told reporters. A high-stakes battle is expected in Bihar, where the NDA, which includes Janata Dal (United) led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will face the Mahagathbandhan. The opposition alliance includes Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Left parties. view comments Location : Patna, India, India First Published: News politics Fresh Alliance Twist In Bihar?
