Cowboys' Dak Prescott knows postseason record must be better: 'I'd give the money I make to win and be broke'

Yahoo4 days ago
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has more Pro Bowl nods (three) than playoff wins (two). He understands criticism comes with the territory of the position he plays, the $240 million contract extension he signed last year and the team he represents.
Since winning their third Super Bowl of the '90s — and fifth as a franchise — during the 1995 season, the Cowboys have yet to even return to the NFC championship. That 30-year drought without an NFC championship is the longest in the conference.
"Nobody's more upset; nobody's more pissed; nobody's more disappointed about that than I am," Prescott, who is 2-5 in the playoffs, told Clarence Hill of All City DLLS, as reported by ProFootballTalk.
"Nobody wants to win more than me," Prescott continued. "I have the proof in what I do, in my hours and my habits of preparation. I understand it's a team game, but, at the end of the day, the quarterback is paid to fill in those gaps, and when you're not playing well, to understand that and to bring the team back. And have I done that when I needed to? Absolutely not in those crucial times. And if I had, the record wouldn't be 2-5. That's being a realist. However, I know what I put into this game. I do it all for a purpose. And when I go through the fire, that just says it's shaping up what's to come."
After suffering a season-ending hamstring tear in Week 9 last season, Prescott knows the pressure is on for him to deliver in 2025, what will be his 10th NFL season.
While the Cowboys missed the postseason in his absence, the division rival Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles made the NFC championship. The Eagles won that NFC East-themed conference title game before blowing out the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
The soon-to-be-32-year-old Prescott has checked off several boxes during his NFL career, on and off the field. He went from fourth-round pick to surprising starter and then NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016. The Mississippi State product won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2022. In 2023, he led the league in touchdown passes and was runner-up to Lamar Jackson in MVP voting.
But he's also suffered a pair of season-ending injuries and underachieved in the playoffs.
'I would bet on myself, and I'd bet on the work that I put into this thing any day," Prescott told Hill, as reported by ProFootballTalk. "And trust me, I'd give the money I make to win and be broke."
Earlier this month, Prescott said he'll be a "full-go" for Cowboys training camp, which begins on July 22. He'll be playing for his third head coach, as Dallas moved off Mike McCarthy and promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer earlier this offseason.
To improve upon his 2-5 postseason record, Prescott will first have to get his Cowboys back to the playoffs despite playing in a rigorous NFC East.

Why NFL's heaviest player at 449 pounds isn't allowed to practice yet

Certain players in the NFL pack on the pounds to play their positions -- offensive lineman do it to absorb the punishment of playing against agile pass-rushers. And defensive tackles like Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Desmond Watson want to gobble up running backs trying to get by them. But in the case of Watson, he actually needs to lose weight. At a listed 449 pounds, the Bucs are putting him on the non-football illness list in order for him to shed some pounds. Per head coach Todd Bowles: "It's just about trying to get him better to be a healthier player and getting him on the field a little more, that's where I'm at right now." Bowles added Watson's working on getting in more shape, "and that's all you can ask for right now." We'll see what happens with that situation. Who are the heaviest NFL players of all time? Watson would be it if he stays at this weight. Aaron Gibson -- a tackle who played for the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears -- was once listed at 410 pounds. And ex-Cowboy Nate Newton once tipped the scales at 401 pounds. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Bucs 449-pound DT Desmond Watson isn't allowed to practice yet

Jets QB Justin Fields suffers dislocated toe in his right foot Thursday, able to take the field for practice Friday

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields suffered a dislocated toe in his right foot during Thursday's practice, the team announced. Fields is considered "day-to-day" and, according to the Jets, "avoided serious injury and significant missed time." That turned out to be an accurate diagnosis, as Fields returned to practice Friday. Things appeared scary Thursday when Fields initially sustained the injury. Fields threw an incompletion, then sat down and stood up before limping off the field. Trainers were seen removing his right cleat to work on his foot. He was then carted off to the locker room to be examined. The team then ended what they were doing in practice and began working on special teams. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters he believed Fields had his foot stepped on. Tests showed no fracture, only the dislocation, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Jets are hoping Fields will be ready for Week 1. Fields is in his first season with the Jets after signing a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason after spending 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tyrod Taylor is the Jets' backup quarterback. When asked about the veteran signal caller potentially being needed to play, Glenn said, "I don't think there's any drop off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play calling." Fields making an impression early on Prior to his time in Pittsburgh, Fields played three seasons in Chicago after the Bears selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Bears traded Fields to the Steelers in 2024 after obtaining the No. 1 pick in the draft to select Caleb Williams. Fields then split time in Pittsburgh with Russell Wilson. He started Pittsburgh's first six games after Wilson suffered a calf injury in training camp before Wilson took over at quarterback for the rest of the season. In 10 appearances, including his six starts, Fields completed 65.8% of his passes last season for 1,106 yards on 6.9 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and one interception. He ran for 289 yards on 4.7 yards per carry with five rushing touchdowns. The Steelers were 4-2 in games he started, but moved on to Wilson once he was healthy. During offseason work, Fields has impressed Sauce Gardner, to the point that the two-time All-Pro cornerback said Fields has been making throws on the level of the quarterback he is replacing. "There's only a certain amount of quarterbacks that can make [certain throws]," Gardner said earlier this month via "The Pat McAfee Show." "I'm talking about throws on, like, Aaron [Rodgers'] type of level. When it comes to being able to squeeze those throws in there, I always thought Aaron was the best when it came to that. And it's like Justin had made a few throws where I'm like, 'OK, he really been in the lab, for real.' I could just tell." Fields and the Jets won't have to wait long to see Rodgers and his new team, the Steelers. New York and Pittsburgh will meet in Week 1.
