Under threat of elimination, UC Irvine's bats emerged once again.
Bringing the power for a second straight game, the Anteaters connected for five home runs Sunday, eliminating Arizona State 11-6 in the Los Angeles Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament.

Needing to win four straight games to advance to the super regionals after losing to Arizona State on Friday, UC Irvine is halfway to its goal.
Alonso Reyes — who had just one home run in 2025 entering Sunday's game — ripped a two-run home run off of Sun Devils starter Derek Schaefer in the fourth inning. Later in the inning, after Arizona State coach Willie Bloomquist went with Lucas Kelly out of the bullpen, Chase Call cleared the batter's eye in dead center field for a two-run home run to give the Anteaters a 6-1 lead.

UC Irvine took a 7-2 lead in the sixth when Call launched a changeup over the heart of the plate from Sun Devils closer Cole Carlon beyond the left-field wall.

Call's two home runs weren't the only examples of the Anteaters' power at the plate.
UC Irvine star center fielder Jacob McCombs connected for a no-doubt home run (423 feet, 106.5 mph) for the second straight day in the third inning, lifting the ball over The Jack and Rhodine Gifford Hitting Facility in right field. McCombs, an All-Big-West First Team honoree, leaned back in the batter's box after his home run, taking time to admire his go-ahead blast.
Even when the Sun Devils threatened — scoring three in the sixth to make it a two-run game — James Castagnola replenished the lead with a two-run home run in the seventh. UC Irvine forced Carlon — who entered the game with a 2.73 earned-run average — from the game. He conceded a season-high five runs (four earned) across 1⅓ innings.
Plenty is still up for grabs for the Anteaters, but it will now require more of the same offense — and taking down UCLA twice (once Sunday night and on Monday) to extend their season. Luckily for coach Ben Orloff, he preserved most of his pitching staff thanks to redshirt sophomore left-hander Ryder Brooks' start.

The brother of former UCLA pitcher Jake Brooks made himself at home at Jackie Robinson Stadium, tossing 5⅓ innings of five-run ball, giving up six hits, walking four and striking out three with low-slot delivery. It was Brooks' longest start since a complete-game shutout of Hawaii on April 19.
Orloff dipped into his bullpen for just two relief pitchers. Ricky Ojeda, the Big West Pitcher of the Year, tossed 1 ⅓ innings on 34 pitches. Over the last three days, Ojeda has thrown 74 pitches — and would be on just a few hours rest if he pitches Sunday night against UCLA. The Anteaters split their midweek season series against the Bruins earlier this year.

Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Is Being Recruited To A Different Sport

Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Is Being Recruited To A Different Sport originally appeared on The Spun. Not that it's likely to happen anytime soon, but if Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham ever finds herself looking for work, a different sport is happy to give her a new opportunity. People have been impressed by Cunningham's size, personality and popularity for a while now. Among the many who see other career paths for her is professional wrestling promoter Dave McLane. In a recent appearance at Comic Con in San Diego, McLane spoke about the idea of both Cunningham and Caitlin Clark joining his Women of Wrestling (WOW) promotion. He said he watched Cunningham and the Fever compete against the Las Vegas Aces and loved what he saw from her. 'I'm from Indiana. I'm from Indianapolis, and that's the home of not only the second-best basketball team in the country this last year, but the biggest name in professional basketball today, Caitlin Clark. And Caitlin Clark has an enforcer. She's the Marty McSorley to Wayne Gretzky, and she is a stunning athlete,' McLane said, via The Daily Mirror. 'I flew to Las Vegas and watched them in action against the Aces, and I would love to have Sophia Cunningham in WOW, because she takes down the competition, and she makes sure that Caitlin Clark is safe on the basketball floor. We'd love to have Sophie in WOW.' McLane isn't the only one who would like to bring Cunningham into the fold though. He isn't the most prominent either. Longtime Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss recently took to X and echoed McLane's sentiment, declaring that she would "love" to have Cunningham join WOW. Buss has been a developer of the California-based wrestling promotion for many years. 'We would love to have @SophieCunning5 join us at @wowsuperheroes she is talented, dedicated and a fierce competitor!!' There are plenty of pro athletes who have made a successful transition into professional wrestling, though there are far fewer who went in from pro basketball. The number is smaller still for WNBA players or women's basketball players in general. If there's anyone who could break the mold though, it's Sophie Cunningham. Would Cunningham ever consider such a career change?Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Is Being Recruited To A Different Sport first appeared on The Spun on Jul 29, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.

Rams have timetable for Matthew Stafford's recovery from sore back but don't plan to make it public

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Rams have a timetable for quarterback Matthew Stafford's recovery from a sore back, but Los Angeles coach Sean McVay does not plan on making it public to avoid the perception of a possible setback. Stafford is missing his second straight week of training camp because of an ailment that has been bothering him in recent weeks. McVay has been steadfast in his optimism that Stafford, 37, won't miss the season opener against Houston on Sept. 7. 'At this point, there is a plan in place. But what I don't want to do is give you guys a date and then, you know, if that does change, then there's assumptions that I would imagine that I would have if I was in your guys' shoes that can lead you to think, 'Oh man, something's really up,'' McVay said Tuesday. 'So we are week to week with him. ... What I don't want to do is set a timetable with you guys, and then, if for whatever reason as we're continuing to gain information, that changes. But what I can say is I feel good about this is the smartest plan for him, and we're very confident that he'll be ready to roll against the Texans, and we'll take it a week at a time.' Stafford has guided the Rams into the playoffs in three of his four seasons with the team, leading them to a Super Bowl title in their home stadium to cap off his first year in Los Angeles following the 2021 campaign. But the veteran going into his 17th season also missed games in 2022 and 2023 because of injuries, prompting the Rams to add a proven backup in Jimmy Garoppolo before last season. The presence of Garoppolo, who has started 64 games for New England, San Francisco, Las Vegas and the Rams, is allowing the Rams to continue preparations for the season during camp at Loyola Marymount University as they would have with Stafford running the offense. McVay described Garoppolo as one of the main reasons the Rams can afford to be patient with Stafford's health. 'There's nobody like Matthew, we know that, but to be able to have somebody that has done all the things that you're mentioning, going into Year 12, played in big games. ... Now we're still able to evaluate the other 10 around him, and we're able to kind of continue on with the installations where that hasn't always been the case with us if we needed to be smart and rest Matthew,' McVay said. 'We'll certainly be really excited when we get No. 9 back out here for us, but in the meantime, I've been really pleased with Jimmy.' ___ AP NFL:
