Rams have timetable for Matthew Stafford's recovery from sore back but don't plan to make it public
Stafford is missing his second straight week of training camp because of an ailment that has been bothering him in recent weeks.
McVay has been steadfast in his optimism that Stafford, 37, won't miss the season opener against Houston on Sept. 7.
'At this point, there is a plan in place. But what I don't want to do is give you guys a date and then, you know, if that does change, then there's assumptions that I would imagine that I would have if I was in your guys' shoes that can lead you to think, 'Oh man, something's really up,'' McVay said Tuesday. 'So we are week to week with him. ... What I don't want to do is set a timetable with you guys, and then, if for whatever reason as we're continuing to gain information, that changes. But what I can say is I feel good about this is the smartest plan for him, and we're very confident that he'll be ready to roll against the Texans, and we'll take it a week at a time.'
Stafford has guided the Rams into the playoffs in three of his four seasons with the team, leading them to a Super Bowl title in their home stadium to cap off his first year in Los Angeles following the 2021 campaign. But the veteran going into his 17th season also missed games in 2022 and 2023 because of injuries, prompting the Rams to add a proven backup in Jimmy Garoppolo before last season.
The presence of Garoppolo, who has started 64 games for New England, San Francisco, Las Vegas and the Rams, is allowing the Rams to continue preparations for the season during camp at Loyola Marymount University as they would have with Stafford running the offense.
McVay described Garoppolo as one of the main reasons the Rams can afford to be patient with Stafford's health.
'There's nobody like Matthew, we know that, but to be able to have somebody that has done all the things that you're mentioning, going into Year 12, played in big games. ... Now we're still able to evaluate the other 10 around him, and we're able to kind of continue on with the installations where that hasn't always been the case with us if we needed to be smart and rest Matthew,' McVay said. 'We'll certainly be really excited when we get No. 9 back out here for us, but in the meantime, I've been really pleased with Jimmy.'

Studs and Duds from the Lions loss to Chargers in Hall of Fame game
The Detroit Lions had a tough start to the preseason in terms of getting a win, but the preseason is for learning, and that should come from Thursday night's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Lions fell 34-7 to the Chargers in their long-awaited return to the Hall of Fame game. The early start to the preseason kickstarted the training camp journey early in a key year for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Head coach Dan Campbell didn't risk putting any starters into the action on Thursday, going with backups from the first snap. While it doesn't necessarily give fans an idea of how the team will perform come September, it does help the coaches inch closer to deciding roster spots and positioning on the depth chart. A few guys made their mark, while another handful didn't do themselves any favors. Here's a look at Thursday night's Studs and Duds: Dud: Kyle Allen Backup quarterback Kyle Allen got the start on Thursday for the Lions and he didn't instill any kind of confidence for the situation behind Jared Goff. Allen threw two ugly interceptions in his one half of play, and didn't have much luck moving down the field despite a handful of big plays from Craig Reynolds and Isaac TeSlaa. Stud: Craig Reynolds What more can be said about Craig Reynolds? He shows up and does exactly what you'd expect no matter the circumstances. Reynolds had as solid of a game as anyone for Detroit on Thursday night. A handful of solid gains and a punch in at the goal line to put up the Lions' first points of the game seemed like light work for the third-string RB. Dud: Returners The Lions did not have much to show from the performance early on from their kick returners. To start the game, Grant Stuard ran the ball right into the back of Anthony Pittman and coughed it up to the Chargers. Their first chance to take over on offense in the second half was more of the same as rookie receiver Jakobie Keeney-James muffed a punt that also ended up Los Angeles ball. Stud: Isaac TeSlaa Lions rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa showed his upside in a hurry on a drive late in the first quarter, hauling in back-to-back 20+ yard catches to get the offense moving down the field. TeSlaa also had a decent chance at hauling in a touchdown but Kyle Allen overthrew him and right into the hands of a Chargers defender. TeSlaa also got some reps on special teams, including some solid work as a gunner that helped pin the Chargers deep on one occasion. Stud: Dominic Lovett Seventh-round rookie wide receiver Dominic Lovett had a shaky start with an easy drop, but really turned things around once he settled in. Lovett has a couple of key plays to keep the offense moving including a pivotal catch on 4th-and-1 that set up the Craig Reynolds touchdown. He finished with five catches and 31 yards, in addition to a 22-yard punt return.

LSU football's Zavion Thomas named to Paul Hornung Award watchlist
LSU football's Zavion Thomas was named to the Paul Hornung Award watchlist on Thursday. The award is presented annually to college football's most versatile player. Former LSU playmaker Odell Beckham earned recognition in 2013 after contributing as a wide receiver, kick returner, and punt returner. Thomas, rostered as a wide receiver, also serves as a return specialist. The senior earned a spot on the AP's preseason All-SEC second team for his success on special teams. In 2024, he averaged 26.4 yards per kick return and even scored a touchdown. Before joining the Tigers in 2024, Thomas recorded two standout seasons as a return specialist at Mississippi State. He accumulated 365 yards between kick and punt returns in 2023, finishing the year with 891 all-purpose yards. He increased that number to 993 all-purpose yards last year. Thomas will face increased competition in the wide receiver room as LSU brought in multiple experienced Power Four pass catchers from the transfer portal. He caught 23 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns last year. Thomas has been working with the first group so far in training camp and LSU will look to get Thomas involved in different ways in 2025.
