Long screen time is a pain in more than just the neck

Time of India22-07-2025
Lifestyle ailments that are increasingly becoming commonplace among young professionals who spend long hours at work often have a common underlying cause: their sitting posture in front of the screen.
The number of working professionals visiting hospitals with muscular, spinal, eye and heart disorders and mental concerns has increased 30-40% now compared with last year, doctors said. Many of these patients are millennials and Gen Zs, who spend long hours at work to stay relevant in workplaces that are changing fast with the disruption caused by artificial intelligence.
The rise in disorders linked to long hours working on computers has also led to terms like
Tech Neck
, Text Claw, Sitting Disease, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, Dead Butt Syndrome and
Digital Fatigue Syndrome
finding their way into the medical vocabulary. Doctors said many cases are so severe that they need medical intervention and at times even surgeries. At Delhi's Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, 70% OPD walk-in patients were elderly, mostly 60-plus, until four-five years ago, said Seema Grover, head of the Department of Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation. But now they are much younger. 'Around 60-70% are now 20-40 years of age. This is especially true of younger professionals in corporates with long working hours who come with biomechanical and postural concerns.'
Among these patients, degenerative changes are seen much earlier in the spine due to muscular imbalance and repetitive stress injuries.
Excessive screen usage is damaging, especially with wrong posture, said Grover. Use of screen compels one to bend his/her neck at an around 60-degree angle and the neck has to strain to maintain the head position to bear 10 pounds (about 4.5 kg) load in neutral. 'This is six times the strain/load the muscles take compared to when in an upright position,' she explained. Long screen hours also cause damage to the heart, brain, muscles, and even lead to mental disorders, say doctors.
'We have seen an unprecedented surge — an almost 25–30% rise — in OPD visits over the last year alone due to sedentary lifestyles,' said Ripen Gupta, principal director and unit head of Cardiac Sciences, Cardiology, at Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital. More and more 25- to 35-year-olds are coming with hypertension, obesity-related issues, and even pre-clinical heart disease, he said.

Chandigarh: PGI mulling video consultations for follow-up patients to ease OPD rush

To ease the overwhelming patient rush during OPD hours, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is planning to introduce tele-consultation services for follow-up patients. PGIMER sees a daily OPD footfall of 8,000-10,000 patients, of whom two-thirds visit the hospital for follow-up. (Ravi Kumar/HT) The telemedicine department has circulated a proposal to all departments, seeking their participation. During their OPD visit, if follow-up patients opt for online consultation, they will be given a specific date and time for a video call with the doctor. Each clinic or OPD will need to allocate a separate room for these tele-consultation sessions. If implemented, the initiative will save patients, especially those travelling from far-off places, time, money and effort, allowing them to consult doctors from the comfort of home. Currently, PGIMER sees a daily OPD footfall of 8,000-10,000 patients, of whom two-thirds are follow-ups and one-third are new patients registering for the first time. Managing this rush has been a long-standing challenge for the institute. One initiative in this direction is the Digi Seva system, already implemented in the department of hepatology. It allows follow-up patients to register online, bypassing long queues. Patients using online registration are also given priority, further cutting down wait times. The telemedicine department has been offering tele-consultation to doctors of Haryana, who require expert opinion on various cases, through a memorandum of understanding between the institute and the Haryana government. Since 2021, the department has provided 2.5 lakh consultation to various government hospitals doctors. However, direct doctor-to-patient tele-consultation is currently not offered at any government hospital in the region. If PGIMER manages to roll out this service, it will be the first government institution to do so, said a professor at the hospital, not wishing to be named. A meeting involving stakeholders from various departments was held last month, following which a formal proposal has been circulated. So far, internal medicine, nephrology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynaecology, and gastroenterology departments have shown interest. Adequate manpower a challenge While the project is in its initial stage and technical modalities need to be worked out, adequate manpower remains a major challenge in implementing the proposal. Each department will need at least one data entry operator to schedule appointments and an assistant for the doctor during video calls. Departments will either have to spare staff from their existing pool or fresh recruitments will have to be done. At present, the telemedicine department has 25 staffers, of which 23 are working under two health ministry-funded projects. PGIMER itself has provided only two contractual staffers for cleaning and sweeping. Other than tele-consultation, the department also creates educational content, including video lectures and training modules for MBBS students, under the health ministry's learning management system. The department has no sanctioned faculty posts. It has long been demanding the creation of such posts to strengthen its tele-consultation, academic and research work. The proposal for faculty positions was tabled in the institute's 131st Standing Finance Committee meeting last month and sent for review. The head of the telemedicine department declined to comment, citing the proposal's early stage. The next meeting will be held once responses from all departments are in.

Punjab Health Minister issues strict directives for uninterrupted oxygen supply in all critical care units

Chandigarh: Punjab's Health Minister Balbir Singh on Tuesday issued strict directives to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply and power backup in all critical care units, including ICUs, Operation Theatres (OTs) and emergency wards across all government health facilities in the state. The directives came in the wake of the death of three patients at the civil hospital in Jalandhar on Sunday, with the kin of the deceased blaming a technical fault in the oxygen supply at the trauma centre for the deaths. Presiding over a high-level meeting with civil surgeons from all districts, Balbir Singh emphasised the need for 24x7 oxygen availability, functional UPS systems and fully operational generator sets to prevent any disruption in life-saving medical services. Balbir Singh said that approximately one thousand new doctors will be joining in the coming months, as the recruitment process is near completion, which will considerably improve the quality of health services. The Health Minister also issued stringent directives regarding medicine supply, instructing civil surgeons to maintain at least one month's buffer stock of all 368 types of essential medicines and warned against any shortage of essential medicines. "No patient should be prescribed any medicines from outside the hospital," he said, while reiterating that the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led government's commitment to ensure free and accessible healthcare. He said that Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) have been empowered to purchase any non-essential medicine as per their requirement, warning that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any non-complying medical officer. To bolster the medicine dispensing system and overall patient experience, civil surgeons and SMOs were also directed to visit OPDs daily and collect patient feedback. To further enhance patient satisfaction, Balbir Singh directed civil surgeons to ensure that Outpatient Department (OPD) services are delivered within an hour of registration. In another move to enhance critical care capabilities, the minister announced that every doctor and paramedic, including staff nurses, will undergo training in critical care and advanced life support. He also tasked each civil surgeon to submit their district's health status in comparison to the Millennium Development Goals, enabling the department to set targets for better progress.>
