The New York Mets could be on their way to shocking the baseball world.
In an article for The Athletic, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is reporting the Mets are keeping an eye on Athletics closer Mason Miller and are "in the mix" to acquire him.
"The Athletics, in their talks for closer Mason Miller, have focused on teams with top-end young pitching," wrote Rosenthal. "But whether they find a club to meet their price remains to be seen. ... The New York Mets, whose farm system includes perhaps more elite young arms than the Yankees', are also a team in the mix."
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JULY 24: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches in the ninth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on July 24, 2025 in Houston, Texas.
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JULY 24: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches in the ninth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on July 24, 2025 in Houston, Texas. The Mets' farm system is filled with high-level pitching prospects as four of the top 10 are right-handed pitchers. Two of them, Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat, have drawn a lot of attention this season for performing well in the minor leagues.
As Rosenthal also pointed out, Miller has 4 1/2 seasons of team control left. To put it simply, it will take a lot for the Athletics to consider moving on from him. Rosenthal reported the A's asked Philadelphia for Andrew Painter, the No. 8 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB.com's rankings. New York would likely have to move on from four to five prospects in its top 10 to even have a chance at acquiring Miller.
Miller's rise to professional baseball has been one of the biggest stories as he makes a name for himself. The 26-year-old closer, who started his career at Division III Waynesburg University, is one of the hardest-throwing arms in baseball.
Previous reports have indicated the team is unlikely to move Miller, but a last-minute offer could change things for the Athletics.
