Inside Giovanni's Room review – pulsing dance retelling of James Baldwin novel
Literary adaptations in dance are fraught with pitfalls, predominantly how to express the intricacy and specificity of thousands of words through movement only. 'There are no mothers-in-law in ballet,' George Balanchine famously said. Here it is aunts: there's no way you'd know the woman in red is David's aunt (unless you read the synopsis, which is recommended) but perhaps it doesn't matter. What dance can do is express Aunt Ellen's disapproval though her superior gait and dismissive flick of the wrists.
There is a lot that is said through bodies alone in this new retelling by Phoenix Dance Theatre and the company's artistic director Marcus Jarrell Willis. The way in the opening scene, David (Aaron Chaplin) moves as if his body's not entirely under his control, almost tripping himself up, a shorthand for the physical urges that will drive him off course when he meets handsome bartender Giovanni (Tony Polo). There's the dance between the two men, skirting each other, with nerves and reticence and then the dawning certainty of a connection; with hunger and tenderness. There's an urgency pushing at the movement throughout, the pulse of a city's nightlife, the club scenes cleverly threaded with slivers of styles that look at times like the 1920s, at others the 2020s – Willis brings a currency and vernacular groove to his choreography.
There's some nice craft: the opening of Act II – snapshots of David and Giovanni's relationship between blackouts, the tension stretched, especially when life outside Giovanni's room encroaches – is very effective. But it feels as if there are depths and details of Baldwin's text unilluminated, sometimes plot, sometimes the different textures of fear and anxiety, hatred and self-hatred. And there's a claustrophobia in Marc Strobel's layered score that becomes grating, the volume ramped up to create 'atmosphere', as if they don't trust that the dance could speak for itself.

'I'm the new Superman – here's how I spent my last hour of anonymity'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video What's that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a new Superman movie that's about to land in cinemas across the UK. Superman is the first film in James Gunn's new shared superhero universe and hopes to usher in a new era for Clark Kent and his super friends. Which brings us to the new Superman himself, David Corenswet. The 31-year-old had just one hour between finding out he'd scored the biggest job of his life and the world finding out. So, how did he spend it? 'Oh, I just played solitaire by myself and panicked quietly,' David laughed while speaking to Metro about that fateful s60 minutes on the red carpet at London's Superman Fan Event. 'No, I had the opportunity to tell about six or seven people who I was close to, and just kind of relished in this one hour where I had a big secret that nobody else knew about,' he continued. 'It's a rare moment in life, so I tried to be present with it, and not be too overwhelmed.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I got to tell my wife and a couple of family members, and then just sat in a chair and waited for the news to break.' Thankfully, once David's not-so-secret identity had been exposed, he could rely on other actors who've slipped into Superman's red Speedos for advice. 'I was lucky enough to exchange letters with Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill, two fellas who have played Superman before me,' David explained. 'They said, 'You know, there's not much advice that we can give. You know, you sort of have to do your own thing.' 'But it was really wonderful to get words of encouragement from them, and then to be able to write to them and talk about how appreciative I was of the way that they had stewarded the character in their time. That was a special experience.' Superman will eschew the traditional origin story and instead introduce us to a Clark Kent (David Corenswet) who's been battling bad guys for years and is already in a relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). More Trending Unfortunately, this means Superman has had time to make more than a few enemies, including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who has a plan to bring the Man of Tomorrow down to Earth. Will he succeed? Well, you'll have to fly over to your local cinema to find out. Superman soars into cinemas on July 11. Got a story? Brooklyn Beckham kisses Nicola in heartbreaking photos for David and Victoria
Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz secretly visited the UK for a photoshoot just two miles from his family home amid the ongoing feud with David and Victoria Beckham David and Victoria Beckham are sure to have their hearts broken when they cast their eyes to the latest photos of eldest son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz. The family have been warring for weeks, in a move that is said to have left them all devastated. Brooklyn and Nicola sparked concern for the famous family when they failed to attend any of David's 50th birthday celebrations in May. They had even jetted into London from Los Angeles but decided to stay away from the special family events. It proved just the start of distance forming for the Beckhams, as Brooklyn failed to reach out to his football icon dad when he received his long-awaited knighthood. Father's Day also came and went without a murmur from the eldest son, with reports claiming he has stopped responding to his famous parents and siblings. Things came to a devastating blow when it emerged Brooklyn and Nicola had returned to the UK amid the ongoing drama. They managed to keep their visit a secret from the family as they swiftly left for LA before the news broke. The young couple headed to London to take part in a photoshoot for designer brand Moncler, dubbed a "love letter" to the capital. To make things even worse for Posh and Becks, Brooklyn and Nicola shot their photos just two miles from the family home in Holland Park. On the same day, David was even closer as he attended the Chelsea Flower Show that was just around a mile away. Photos from the shoot have finally been released, as Brooklyn and Nicola put on a very loved up display. It would surely be a tough look for David and Victoria as the painful memories of that day will be brought back. Brooklyn and Nicola donned matching Moncler jackets for the shoot as they embraced on a cobblestoned street in the city. They also gazed lovingly into each others eyes for the campaign in a separate dark and moody shot. For his solo snaps, Brooklyn looked the spitting image of his famous dad as he strolled through the capital. He showcased a number of different looks for the brand, including an all white outfit and a sophisticated beige and brown combination that is not too dissimilar to what David would wear. In her own photo, Nicola embraced a sulky look as she wore a dark fur jacket with burgundy leather gloves and clutched a brown bag. She wore her hair back and added a smokey eye to add to the style of the shoot. Despite keeping their trip to London on the down low from his family, a picture uploaded to Instagram showed Brooklyn sipping a pint in a pub, with bottles of his own-brand hot sauce on the table in front of him. Innocuous enough to outsiders – but friends of the Beckhams recognised the distinctive light fittings and stark green walls in the background. One pal told us: 'The picture was taken in London's Wigmore pub, which is part of the Langham Hotel where the Beckhams have sometimes stayed. 'The fact that Brooklyn was in the country and failed to see any of his family was heartbreaking. And not only that, but here he was posting about it.' A pal revealed: 'Brooklyn had kept the visit quiet from not only his mum and dad but his siblings and extended family. It was terribly sad that he had flown thousands of miles to London and hadn't engaged at all. It would have been very easy to meet up.' To acquaintances of the family, the blame for what they believe are 'performative' social media posts lies with billionaire heiress Nicola. But a source close to the couple hit back at suggestions Nicola is 'controlling' her husband – and insisted Brooklyn is very much his own man. They revealed: 'She is not isolating him at all. He is free to do what he wants and he loves his wife and they are happy together. They are each other's family.'

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz look loved up in photos that ‘sparked family feud rumours' after missing David's 50th

The pair flew to London for the advertising campaign in May, days after snubbing his dad David's 50th birthday celebrations. Sources said the snub was a "dagger to the heart" for his parents. Two weeks later the couple, who live in Los Angeles, jetted to London for the Moncler shoot but failed to meet up with Brooklyn's family. The photos for the Italian fashion brand have finally been released and show Brooklyn snuggling into Nicola in a series of romantic moments. The Sun revealed they landed the six figure deal with the designer firm and shot the photos minutes away from the Beckhams' home in West London. They were also up the road from where David was, attending the Chelsea Flower Show with King Charles and Queen Camilla. An insider said at the time: 'Brooklyn and David couldn't have been closer in distance. 'It strikes a chord knowing how close in distance Brooklyn was to David given how tense their relations have been recently. 'Brooklyn was filming five minutes away by car.' Rumours about a feud with the Beckham clan and Nicola, 30, have circulated since her £3million wedding to Brooklyn, 26, in Florida. Brooklyn Beckham's family rift deepens as he turns back on UK by splashing out £11m on LA mansion with wife Nicola Peltz Since then, the alleged clash has intensified after Brooklyn snubbed all four parties that were thrown for his ex-footballer dad David to celebrate his birthday. This week, more upset was caused when photos were shared showing Brooklyn enjoying a party for his father-in-law, Nelson Peltz's birthday. NICOLA HITS BACK Nicola wrote how "lucky" she was to be his daughter before adding that he provided them with "constant love and support". Now Brooklyn and his family's fans have waded in. The post received backlash from Beckham supporters, with some accusing Nicola of "controlling her husband. However, there were also supportive messages, with one fan writing: "The fact people are in this comment section talking bs about someone controlling a GROWN man is absurd. "The guy is an adult and can make his own decisions, leave them be and stop blaming women for everything." Nicola then was seen "liking" the comment, as she agreed with what the fan was saying. In another twist, Brooklyn was recently backed by his godfather Sir Elton John. Aspiring chef Brooklyn posted a photo with wife Nicola last week, which got Elton's approval. Elton wrote: 'Happy Anniversary to the sweetest, most loving couple,' followed by love hearts, and his husband David added his own comment, which read: 'Happy Anniversary to the gorgeous couple.' Elton is Brooklyn's godfather and they're very close, regularly going on trips abroad together over the years. Both Victoria and David failed to comment on or like their son's anniversary post. It was recently revealed that the situation has become so severe that Brooklyn is no longer on speaking terms with his siblings. This week The Sun revealed David was in hospital for a secret operation on his wrist. Wife Victoria shared a pic from his hospital bedside, writing "get well soon daddy". 9 Brooklyn is seen snuggling into Nicola in photos for Italian fashion brand Moncler Credit: MONCLER 9 The aspiring chef turns his hand to modelling in the campaign shot in London Credit: MONCLER 9 Nicola has hit back at fans saying she is controlling Brooklyn - and shared pics of her and Brooklyn celebrating her father's birthday Credit: Instagram/nicolaannepeltzbeckham 9 David has been in hospital this week Credit: instagram
