Headingley redemption at Edgbaston: Harry Brook scores 9th Test hundred

India Todaya day ago
Harry Brook would not be denied on Friday, July 4 on Day 3 of Edgbaston as he got his redemption for missing out on a hundred in the first Test. Brook got to his 9th Test hundred off 137 balls and hit 12 boundaries and a six to help England land a counter-punch in the second Test. Brook looked in imperial touch during the Headingley Test when he rode on his look and was all set to get a big hundred during the first match of the series. However, a short ball from Prasidh Krishna would be his undoing and the England batter was caught in the deep. advertisementENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 3 Updates
The knock, however, played a big role in England's win in the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Brook came into bat on Day 2 after India had posted a mammoth total of 587 and England were reeling at 25 for three. The 26-year-old came in and played a counter-attacking knock towards the end of Day 2 and remained unbeaten on 30. Day 3 meant some added responsibility for Brook as England lost both Joe Root and Ben Stokes off consecutive deliveries and India were on top as the hosts were reduced to 84 for five. From there, Brook and Jamie Smith rebuilt the innings and went on the counter. Brook was relatively quiet compared to Smith, who scored the joint third-fastest hundred by an England batter. But Brook also played some delightful shots to keep in touch with his partner. He did have two lucky moments as the England batter edged one that just went away from the grasp of Shubman Gill and almost chopped one on to the stumps off the same over. However, he was able to guide the ball to the boundary soon after the lunch break to get to his maiden hundred against India and put England in a strong position. - EndsTune InMust Watch

Were India worried about Bazball? Morne Morkel reflects on visitors' late declaration

Morne Morkel has defended India's decision to go for a late declaration on Day 4 of the Edgbaston Test against England on Saturday, July 5, and said that they weren't worried about England and Bazball. India scored 427 runs in their second innings with Shubman Gill leading the way with 161 runs and useful contributions from Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh India were piling on the runs and setting up a target of 608 for England to chase, many of the fans and pundits felt it was a bit of an overkill in the end, as no team has chased more than 418 in the history of Tests. India did get 16 overs at England and reduced them to 72 for three during this time as the hosts still have a big mountain to climb. ENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 4 Updates But the rain in Birmingham may not be the best friend of the visitors as showers are predicted on Day at the press conference after the day's play on Saturday, Morkel said that the team did have a talk about declaration but felt that it was still a good wicket to bat on. The India bowling coach said that the team wanted to get into a good spot as the weather was something beyond their control."That's a good question. We did speak about it a lot of the day. But I think we see that it's still a good wicket. Even our boys were batting quite comfortably towards the back end at 4 or 5 runs an over. With you having the extra day, I mean, weather, you can't really control that. It was getting us into a comfortable position with the bat, and then, obviously, tonight, have 20-plus overs at them and hopefully gloomy grey skies, and get the two or three wickets, and we got that, which is a bonus for us," said Morkel."So yeah, tomorrow morning that first hour is gonna be crucial. We saw this morning that, you know, if you get the ball in the right area, there was a little bit of assistance and yeah, we just need to be on the money with that tomorrow."Were India worried about Bazball?Morkel was asked if India were worried about the Bazballing England and their intention to chase down any target put in front of them. Morkel refuted the notion and said that if a team scores more than 500-plus runs on the final day, then they deserve to win the No, not really. I think if a team scores 500+ on the final day, then they deserve to win. So, I think it was just a little bit more time. Ideally give an hour, a little bit more than an hour at them tonight, with Day 5 around the corner," said are chasing their first-ever win at Edgbaston on Sunday.- Ends

England Star Hilariously Tells Shubman Gill To "Take The Draw". India Captain's Epic Reply

India captain Shubman Gill was involved in a lighthearted banter with England batter Harry Brook on Day 4 of the 2nd Test at Edgbaston on Saturday. Gill dominated the England bowlers on Day 4, smashing 161 off just 162 balls. He had also scored 269 in the first innings. With India's lead nearing the 450-run mark in the second session, Brook tried to convince Gill to declare the innings, suggesting that there is rain forecast for half of the day on Sunday. Their conversation was caught on the stump mic. "450 declare. It's raining tomorrow. Half day, afternoon, it's raining," Book was heard as saying in a viral video. Gill responded by saying, "Bad luck for us." Brook then told the Indian captain to "take the draw". Fancy a declaration, skipper? #HarryBrook 's playful banter with #ShubmanGill had everyone in splits - Trying to charm the Indian captain into a cheeky call? #ENGvIND 2nd TEST, Day 4 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 5, 2025 Gill eventually declared on 427/6 during the final session, setting England a daunting 608-run target. In response, England lost three wickets, courtesy of some excellent new ball bowling from Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj. India are chasing history at Edgbaston, having failed to win a single Test at the venue. They have played eight games in total, losing seven and drawing one. Meanwhile, the hosts were 72/3 in 16 overs, 556 runs short of victory, with Harry Brook and Ollie Pope unbeaten on scores of 15(15) and 24(44). India needs to scythe seven scalps on the final day to restore parity at 1-1 in the five-match series. India made the final overs count with Akash and Siraj running rampant with their explosive pace on Birmingham's placid strip with the new ball. Siraj drew the first blood by punching Zak Crawley 's return ticket on a seven-ball duck. Crawley went to drive the ball that should have been left alone and paid the price for it. He tried to drive the ball away from the body and gave an outside edge, which was caught by substitute Sai Sudharsan, leaving Crawley in disbelief. Akash Deep thought he had his first on the first ball of the third over after the ball passed close to Ben Duckett 's bat. Akash celebrated in jubilation, but Duckett challenged the decision, and the review showed a clear gap between the pad and bat.

Shubman Gill Scripts History, Becomes First Player In 148 Years To...

Shubman Gill continued to spread his magic in the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. After scoring a mammoth 269 in his first innings in the game, Gill hit 161 to put India in the driving seat as the visitors set a massive 608-run target for the Three Lions. The performance helped Gill break and script multiple records; one of them happened for the first time in the 148-year history of Test cricket. Gill became the first-ever batter to smash a double ton and 150 in a Test match. Gill shone with the bat on Satuday before Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep again struck with the new ball as the tourists pressed for a series-levelling win at Edgbaston. Gill declared India's second innings on 427-6 after tea on the fourth day. That left England needing a mammoth 608 runs to go 2-0 up in this five-match series. No side in 148 years of Test cricket have made more to win in the fourth innings than the West Indies' 418 against Australia at St John's in 2003. England's corresponding record is the 378 they made against India at Edgbaston three years ago. But at Saturday's close in Birmingham they were 72-3, needing a further 536 runs on the final day to achieve a win that would be remarkable even by this team's 'Bazball' standards. Harry Brook, who helped keep England afloat in their first innings with 158 in a total of 407, was still there on 15 not out. Siraj, who led India's attack with 6-70 in the first innings, struck an early blow Saturday when he removed Zak Crawley for a duck as a loose drive went straight to backward point. Deep, given the unenviable task of replacing the rested Jasprit Bumrah, the world's number one ranked fast bowler, then carried on from his four-wicket haul first-time around by bowling Ben Duckett (25) with a nip-back ball. He then clean bowled Joe Root for just six as the world's number one-ranked Test batsman was undone by a superb full-length delivery that moved away late. Earlier, by taking his tally in this match to 430 runs, the 25-year-old Gill became only the fifth batsman to score 400 or more runs in a single Test. Gill, thrust into the captaincy following Rohit Sharma's shock retirement from Test duty in May, has scored three hundreds in his first four innings as skipper following his 147 during India's five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley.
