Were India worried about Bazball? Morne Morkel reflects on visitors' late declaration
But the rain in Birmingham may not be the best friend of the visitors as showers are predicted on Day 5.Speaking at the press conference after the day's play on Saturday, Morkel said that the team did have a talk about declaration but felt that it was still a good wicket to bat on. The India bowling coach said that the team wanted to get into a good spot as the weather was something beyond their control."That's a good question. We did speak about it a lot of the day. But I think we see that it's still a good wicket. Even our boys were batting quite comfortably towards the back end at 4 or 5 runs an over. With you having the extra day, I mean, weather, you can't really control that. It was getting us into a comfortable position with the bat, and then, obviously, tonight, have 20-plus overs at them and hopefully gloomy grey skies, and get the two or three wickets, and we got that, which is a bonus for us," said Morkel."So yeah, tomorrow morning that first hour is gonna be crucial. We saw this morning that, you know, if you get the ball in the right area, there was a little bit of assistance and yeah, we just need to be on the money with that tomorrow."Were India worried about Bazball?Morkel was asked if India were worried about the Bazballing England and their intention to chase down any target put in front of them. Morkel refuted the notion and said that if a team scores more than 500-plus runs on the final day, then they deserve to win the game.advertisement"Worried. No, not really. I think if a team scores 500+ on the final day, then they deserve to win. So, I think it was just a little bit more time. Ideally give an hour, a little bit more than an hour at them tonight, with Day 5 around the corner," said Morkel.India are chasing their first-ever win at Edgbaston on Sunday.- Ends

"Gill is in a different zone, Akash Deep complemented Siraj well": Sarandeep Singh after Birmingham win
New Delhi [India], July 7 (ANI): Former Indian selector and cricketer Sarandeep Singh hailed Team India following their memorable win at Birmingham, saying that skipper Shubman Gill is in a 'different zone' since taking up captaincy and hailed the all-round show by the team, right from its top four batters to the pace unit. A historic outing with the bat by skipper Shubman Gill, a ten-wicket haul by pacer Akash Deep were the highlights of a total team effort as India ended their winless streak at Birmingham, securing a 336-run win over England during the second Test on the final day on Sunday. Speaking to ANI after the match, Sarandeep said about the win, 'It is a tremendous victory. England has never lost a match in Birmingham. Today, a new era has started. The most remarkable aspect is that we have won without Bumrah, and even in the absence of (Virat) Kohli and Rohit (Sharma), the batters have performed exceptionally well.' Shubman is in a different zone since taking up the captaincy, he helped India take such a huge lead. Our four batters, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant all have centuries to their name,' he added. Sarandeep also expressed happiness with the bowling, saying that Akash Deep complemented Mohammed Siraj really well, as Akash Deep took a ten-wicket haul and Siraj took a total of seven wickets, including a six-fer in the first innings. 'Credit must also go to pacers. There was a lot of talk about them. Akash Deep complemented Siraj really well. They have done a magnificent job,' he added. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three sixes. Shoaib Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer. Gill took home the 'Player of the Match' as India levelled the series 1-1. (ANI)

Virat Kohli erupts after Shubman Gill's 'fearless' India create history, gives two players 'special mention' for the win
India finally laid to rest their Edgbaston demons in style, crushing England by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 and record their first-ever Test victory at the venue. It was a performance stamped with authority, which saw Akash Deep delivering a sensational ten-wicket match haul and captain Shubman Gill leading from the front with twin centuries (including a double ton). India's captain Shubman Gill (C) and his players during the Edgbaston Test(AFP) At the heart of the celebration was former captain Virat Kohli, who took to social media soon after India sealed the historic win. 'Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubhman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch,' Kohli wrote on his official X profile. Gill's first-innings 269, the highest by an Indian captain overseas, had laid the foundation, supported by Ravindra Jadeja's composed 89 and a handy 65 from Rishabh Pant. In the second innings, Gill returned to smash 161 off just 162 deliveries as India declared with a mammoth target of 608 for England. England's response, while defiant in parts, never looked convincing. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep dismantled the top order early in both innings, although the latter was particularly influential in the second. Akash Deep, playing in place of a rested Jasprit Bumrah, justified with a four-wicket haul in the first innings, and incredible figures of 6/99 in the second, including the final wicket that completed India's 336-run victory. The dismissal was poetic in itself: Brydon Carse skied one to Shubman Gill, who calmly settled under the ball to finish off a landmark win that had eluded Indian teams for 58 years. A dominant Day 5 On the final day, rain delayed the start of the day as heavy downpours in Birmingham sparked concerns over the fate of the Test. However, the ground staff worked quickly once the rain stopped to ensure all three sessions were possible. Akash Deep made early inroads after the play resumed, removing Ollie Pope before Prasidh Krishna picked his first wicket, dismissing Harry Brook. Washington Sundar, then, ended Ben Stokes' resistance in the final over before Lunch. In the second session, Jamie Smith's dismissal on 88 all but ended England's hopes for survival.
