Canada Open: Kidambi Srikanth beats World No 6 in straight sets to set up semis with Nishimoto
It was calm sailing for India's former World Championship silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth as he made the semis of the Super 300 Canada Open winning 21-18, 21-9 against Chou Tien Chen on Friday night at Ontario. The win against the top seed – with the Taiwanese losing to an Indian a second time in two weeks after going doen to Ayush Shetty at Iowa last week – sees Srikanth extend his Malaysia Masters run and wonderful strokeplay continue on another continent. Srikanth had missed out last week, but will be keen on picking a title his first this season. It's been sustained good quality badminton from Srikanth after a long time, and he seems to be enjoying this near no-pressure phase of his career, while still playing that ethereal game of a Top Tenner. However that dazzle will run into the determination of Japanese Kenta Nishimoto on Saturday. Srikanth, 32, leads the head to heads 6-4 against the 30-year-old. Srikanth had beaten the Japanese, who tends to be prickly for several other Indians in straight sets at the last World Championship but the stubborn runner is never easy and has been consistent this season. Former WR 1 Srikanth Kidambi Into The Semi Finals Of The BWF Canada Open 2025 🥹❤️ He Defeated WR 6 Chou Tien Chen In Straight Games !!!🇮🇳 21-18 , 21-9 🇹🇼 What A Match It Was And A Superb Victory For Srikanth ❤️💥 SF vs Kenta Nishimoto 🇯🇵#CanadaOpen2025 — Badminton Media (@BadmintonMedia1) July 5, 2025 Seeded third here, Nishimoto is the first Japanese roadblock ahead for Srikanth finally winning a title after several seasons of a dignified struggle with form and fitness. His game though has remained brilliantly engaging and watchable in a sea of defensive slugfests. But up ahead, if Srikanth gets past Nishimoto, there's potentially Kodai Naraoka, top seed, against whom he's 0-4, a four-score to settle. Nishimoto prevailed over a fighting Sankar Muthusamy Subramaniam, winning 21-15, 5-21, 21-17. In women's singles, Shriyanshi Valishetty, another talented teenager from India, went down in a proper battle to Danish 24-year-old Amalie Schulz, 21-12, 19-21-19-21. Shriyanshi had late fightbacks in both second and third sets but never actually led after picking tge first. She did well to cover a 9-17 deficit in the decider to cone up to 19-20, but couldn't turn the knife in the endgame, finishing a good North American swing.

IND vs ENG second Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal goes past Tendulkar, Gavaskar and Gambhir to become joint-fastest to 2000 Test runs
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal became the joint-fastest to 2,000 Test runs for India alongside former stalwarts Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Jaiswal achieved the feat in the final session of the third day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston on Friday (July 4, 2025). During his limited time on the crease, the young southpaw adopted a belligerent mindset and swiftly stacked up runs on the board to extend India's lead. The young southpaw breezed past the 2000-run mark in Test format with a thick edge, which sent the ball wide of the gully, racing away for a four. Fastest Indian batters to score 2000 runs in Tests (in terms of matches Yashasvi Jaiswal – 21 Sunil Gavaskar – 23 Gautam Gambhir – 24 Rahul Dravid – 25 Virender Sehwag – 25 Vijay Hazare – 26 Cheteshwar Pujara – 26 Sourav Ganguly – 27 Shikhar Dhawan – 28 MAK Pataudi – 28 Ajinkya Rahane – 29 Jaiswal achieved the milestone in his 40th innings to go level with Dravid and Sehwag. He surpassed Indian icons, including Vijay Hazare, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and many more. At 23 years and 188 days, Jaiswal became the second youngest Indian batter to reach the milestone after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who accomplished it at the age of 20 years 330 days. Jaiswal found holes at his will and played with England's setup before being pinned in front of the stumps by Josh Tongue. The youngster went for a drive but missed the line entirely and got trapped in front of the stumps. England appealed, and Jaiswal was deemed out. After due consideration, Jaiswal decided to challenge the decision that the umpire Sharfuddoula accepted. England Test captain Ben Stokes sprinted towards the umpire, indicating that the timer had run out. A lengthy discussion then unfolded between Stokes and the umpire, but eventually, the review was accepted. The review showed three red lights, and England players erupted in jubilation as Jaiswal's quick-fire cameo ended on 28(22), laced with six boundaries. In the first innings, Overall fastest to 2,000 runs in Tests (by matches) Don Bradman (Australia) – 15 Tests George Headley (West Indies) – 17 Tests Michael Hussey (Australia) – 20 Tests Marnus Labuschagne (Australia) – 20 Tests Yashasvi Jaiswal (India) – 21 Tests Viv Richards (West Indies) – 21 Tests Herbert Sutcliffe (England) – 22 Tests Doug Walters (Australia) – 22 Tests Brian Lara (West Indies) – 22 Tests Frank Worrell (West Indies) – 22 Tests Harry Brook (England) – 22 Tests Jaiswal fell agonisingly 13 runs short of a well-deserved century after Stokes outfoxed him and punched his return ticket on 87(107). In England, the right-armers have become Jaiswal's Achilles heel, considering the dominance he exuded over them in the past. In each of the four innings, Jaiswal has lost his wicket to right-armers while averaging at 30.25. Despite Jaislwa's early fall, KL Rahul kept the tempo high with his trademark drives as Karun Nair held on to the other end. India ended the day with 64/1 in 13 overs, enjoying a healthy 244-run lead.
