Colorado transportation officials focus on reducing deadly construction zone crashes

CDOT says crashes around work zones are 100% preventable, so these deaths should not be happening. There is signage posted around every work zone, including detours, do not enter, work zone ahead and even speed limit signs.
Drivers are urged to slow down around construction zones, never drive distracted, and notice lane shifting and when a lane gets narrower. Experts say we are losing too many lives on Colorado roadways.

"There is no reason to have a death on our roadway," said Sam Cole, Traffic Safety Manager for CDOT. "It is always related to bad behaviors. Bad behavior is preventable. Every one of these deaths and injuries is 100% preventable."
Drivers who are caught speeding through a construction zone, ticket fees and points on your license will be doubled. It only takes 12 points to lose your license.

Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and traffic will be reduced to one lane, CDOT said in a June 24 news release that estimated delays would amount to about 15 minutes. Traffic in each direction will alternate on the single lane, CDOT said. CDOT, in the June 24 news release, said the project has been identified as a priority in its 10-year plan and is one of the top safety concern areas. 'The project's new striping will produce clearer roadway lines and safety through this stretch of highway. The road will be safer, have better ride quality and ensure a smoother drive for motorists,' CDOT Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock said in the news release. Crash, vehicle fire closes portion of I-70 in Colorado's high country

The Colorado Department of Transportation confirmed the vehicle fire closed westbound lanes of I-70 at mile marker 218 about 1:27 p.m. That's about a half mile west of Herman Gulch Road.
