It wasn't until 2006 that the N54 arrived, the first mass-produced turbocharged gas engine from BMW. It could hit 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, but this car wasn't only superb in a straight line. 'It's one thing to throw a V8 into a four-door sedan and make it go fast in a straight line,' said Scott Doniger, who became BMW North America's M Brand Manager. 'A heavy front end typically unbalances a sedan, but the M5 didn't feel like a heavy sedan. The package just worked holistically, with phenomenal handling balance under acceleration or braking, and especially in cornering.' By the time production ended in 2003, a total of 9,198 E39 M5s were sold in the USA, proving that the M5's move away from six-cylinder power was a good one. It was followed by the insane E60 M5, a more flawed car but one with a sensational engine. This one had a 5.0-liter V10 known as the S85, and it was inspired by BMW's Formula 1 experience. Charging speeds vary wildly among EVs An EV's charging speed can tip the scales one way or the other, especially if you enjoy family road trips. While I may be cool with waiting half an hour for an electric crossover to charge on a weekend adventure, my kids, both of whom are under five years old, might feel differently. The Volkswagen ID.4 is one of the 'older' EVs on the market, but it still offers respectable range and performance at a competitive price. The base model only offers 245 miles of range, a rather disappointing amount compared to other EVs. The base Volkswagen ID.4 Pro, on the other hand, starts at $45,095 and can go as far as 291 miles on a single charge, which is much more respectable. That's a healthy difference in both range and price, but no matter the trim level, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has the advantage when it comes to hitting the charger. The ID.4 falls behind with a 28-minute 80% charge time. The difference comes down to electrical architecture. While the VW ID.4 is limited to 175 kW when connected to a DC fast charger, the Ioniq 5 can handle up to 350 kW, or twice as much as its German competitor. Both the Ioniq 5 and ID.4 come with a single electric motor in their base forms, but Volkswagen's EV beats out the base Ioniq 5 in performance. The electric motor powering the ID.4's rear wheels produces 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, propelling the German EV to 60 mph in a rather leisurely 5.9 seconds. Upgrading to all-wheel drive reduces range to 263 miles and increases performance to 335 horsepower, which results in a quicker 4.9-second 0-60 mph time. Stepping up to the SE trim increases the EV's range to 318 miles, while performance jumps to 225 horsepower. Opting for AWD brings the Ioniq 5's performance up to 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque with a 290-mile range. Of course, if performance is the name of the game, then Hyundai has the VW ID.4 outclassed with the Ioniq 5 N. The performance-driven EV variant comes with standard AWD and burns rubber with a staggering 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. Naturally, that kind of performance drops the available range pretty dramatically, in this case to just 221 miles. Notably, the Ioniq 5 N can charge to 80% in as little as 18 minutes when connected to a DC fast charger. Money is the major barrier here, though, with the Ioniq 5 N priced from $66,200. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a solid alternative While the Volkswagen ID.4 doesn't offer a version comparable to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the Ford Mustang Mach-E seems ready to throw down the gauntlet. Priced from $37,955, the Mustang Mach-E Select arrives on the scene with 264 horsepower and 387 lb-ft of torque with its standard battery. A base model equipped with RWD and a standard battery is capable of 260 miles of range, while AWD models offer 240 miles. 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E — Source: Ford Upgrading to AWD and the extended-range battery increases performance to 370 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, complemented by a 300-mile range. That puts the Mustang Mach-E in competition with the Ioniq 5 in terms of performance, but charging speed is a different ball game. When connected to a DC fast charger, the Mustang Mach-E can charge from 10% to 80% in around 38 minutes. That's 10 minutes slower than the Volkswagen ID.4 and nearly double that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. If you've got a need for speed, the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and Rally present a true challenge to the top-spec Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The GT boasts 280 miles of range while producing 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Opting for the top-spec Rally model increases performance to 700 lb-ft of torque and reduces range to 265 miles. 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E — Source: Ford Final thoughts EVs are still improving every year, but Hyundai's charging speed seems to be the cream of the crop – for now, anyway. With a 20-minute charge time or less, the Ioniq 5 is a capable electric crossover fit for family road trips. While performance and range are lackluster at the base level, that quickly changes with a single step up the ladder. The Volkswagen ID.4 may be one of the older EVs at this point, but it still offers a competitive combination of range and performance across the range. It may not have the quickest charging time, but the VW ID.4 still does better than others, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The grant worth £650million in total, which was announced by the government recently, will see prices slashed for some fully electric cars although it is so far unclear which models will be eligible for £1.500 or £3,750 off their respective price tags. It will be dependent on a complex sustainability criteria which is not entirely clear. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed the Government's new scheme last month. The Electric Car Grant will offer between £1,500 and £3,750 off qualifying electric vehicles, depending on how sustainably they are made. However, it's not available yet, as carmakers must apply for approval — a process that could take weeks. The Volkswagen EVs that come under the firm's new £1,500 'Grant Guarantee' include the ID.3 in Pure, Pro and Pro trim levels, as well as the ID.4 in both Pro and Pure versions but excluding the GTX from both. The grant of £1,500 means the entry-level ID.3 Pure Essential's price drops to £29,360 while the ID.4 Pure Match is reduced to £38,090. Meanwhile, the Skoda's brands covered by the grant are the Elroq and Enyag, in SE, SE L, Edition and SportLine trim. The grant means the Elrog's price will start at £30,010 while the Enyag begins at £38,190. Volkswagen launch its new entry-level electric car, the Cupra's models covered by the grant is for the Born hatchback on V1, V2 and V3 trim levels, dropping the asking price to £34,190. The £1,500 'Grant Guarantee' for all three badges runs until August 31. Volkswagen, Skoda and Cupra all state the grant 'will honour the £1,500 grant on the vehicles specified, even if the government's grant is not awarded'. However, buyers won't be able to get both the 'Grant Guarantee' and the government's Electric Car Grant on any of the models, Auto Express reports. The move by the German car manufacturer follows similar deals or incentives from the likes of Hyundai, Alfa Romeo, Kia and Leapmotor. According to Auto Express, fewer than 50 new EV models would be eligible for the grant - provided they pass the necessary criteria. The scheme will also provide additional support for electric car purchases for Motability customers - as revealed in The Sun's recent report - offering substantial discounts. This has raised concerns among some critics, who argue that taxpayers may effectively be contributing twice - once through the Motability scheme and again through the EV grant subsidies. Furthermore, some welfare users have expressed difficulties with EVs, with issues such as limited home charging facilities and inadequate public charging infrastructure causing frustration for some. There are also several key points to keep in mind before you set out to choose your shiny new discontinued EV. Firstly, the scheme will not be immediately accessible - even though it officially launched on July 16. This is because car brands must apply for eligibility for the vehicles in their ranges, rather than buyers being able to register grants at the point of purchase. Also, not all grants will amount to £3,750 as the scheme adopts a two-tier system, with the value deducted from the recommended retail price (RRP) depending on how environmentally friendly the manufacturing process is for each model. According to the RAC, these restrictions encourage drivers to choose models that are not only cost-effective, but also more sustainable for the planet. Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood has warned that vehicles made in China may not be eligible. Speaking previously on the BBC's Today programme, she said factories powered by coal are unlikely to meet the Government's strict criteria.
