Shifting Threads: The Rise of Conscious Clothing in India

Hans India14 hours ago
Bengaluru: In a country where textiles have historically been the cornerstone of identity and economy, the Indian fashion industry is undergoing a quiet but meaningful transformation. As fast fashion racks up environmental and ethical debt, a new wave of homegrown, conscious clothing brands is shifting the narrative, offering alternatives that are rooted, responsible, and real.
India's fashion market is one of the largest globally, with rising disposable incomes and increased awareness fuelling interest in sustainable living. However, true conscious clothing, which integrates environmentally safe practices, indigenous crafts, fair labour, and long-term usability, is still nascent and largely boutique. The challenge lies in balancing aesthetics, accessibility, and authenticity.
One such brand breaking ground in the sector is Mayori Conscious Clothing – a Jaipur-born label redefining how Indian women experience sustainable fashion. Founded in 2016 by Vrinda Agrawal, Mayori marries Indian textile traditions with Japanese minimalism to offer clothing that feels as good as it looks. From handblock-printed kurtas to clamp-dyed co-ords, each piece is crafted in small batches using natural, anti-allergic fabrics suited to Indian climates.
But what sets Mayori apart isn't just its materials, it's the mindset. Vrinda's approach focuses on building garments that serve the wearer's lifestyle, not dictate it. Designed for ease of movement, daily wear, and machine washing, Mayori garments are thoughtful in both form and function. They come with deep pockets, extra margins for alterations, and a promise of longevity that resists the 'wear-once' culture.
What also makes Mayori stand out is its production philosophy. The brand works closely with artisan communities, many of them women, ensuring fair wages, zero child labour, and ethical processes. With Japanese design consultant Sueyoshi San helping shape the aesthetic since its early days, Mayori has incorporated global standards of quality into a distinctly Indian narrative.
In Vrinda's words, 'We don't inherit the earth, we share it, briefly. With Mayori, I set out to build something that respects that truth: a brand that treads lightly, gives back generously, and honours both nature and tradition with every thread.'
As the demand for conscious fashion grows, whether through boutique collaborations in Singapore and Dubai or evolving product categories like home and junior wear, Mayori stands at the forefront of a movement that's as much about heritage as it is about the future.
Because in India, the thread has always mattered. Mayori just reminds us that it still does.

Vijayawada: Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to take swift action to restore and revitalize the AP Fiber Net project. He charged that the previous government had completely derailed the AP Fiber Net project, a visionary initiative launched between 2014 and 2019. Reviewing the progress of AP Fibernet activities here on Monday, the chief minister asked the officials to assess the challenges, financial constraints, necessary corrective steps, and new policy directions. He said that the system, designed to benefit the public, students, and government departments, was exploited for political purposes by the previous govt. He pointed out that while there were 8.70 lakh connections before 2019, was dropped to 4.50 lakh during the YSRCP regime. "We managed the organization effectively with just 130 employees and provided over 8 lakh connections. But the YSRCP government created unauthorized posts to accommodate its party workers, expanding the workforce from 130 to 1,350 and misusing public funds. This was a new form of corruption where party affiliates were placed in government roles and used for political work. The fiber network was no exception. New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project has marked a significant milestone with the opening of the first section of the 21-km undersea tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra. This segment is part of the ambitious 508-km corridor being built with Japanese Shinkansen technology. According to a statement from the Union Railways Ministry, civil works are progressing at a rapid pace across the alignment. 'So far, 310 km viaduct has been constructed. 15 river bridges are completed and fourare in the advanced stages of construction. Out of 12 stations, five are completed and three more are now reaching completion stage. The station at BKC is an engineering marvel," it added. The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) station, located 32.5 meters underground, is designed to support a 95-meter high-rise above it, and is being said to be an engineering marvel in its own right. Track laying, construction of overhead electrical wires, stations, and bridges is going on at a rapid pace. The construction work in Maharashtra has also picked up pace. In parallel, the progress on procurement of systems for operations and control is also going on well, as per the statement. Japan and India have agreed to introduce the next-generation E10 Shinkansen trains, which will debut simultaneously in both countries. The E10, a successor to the E5 model, promises to redefine speed, safety, and reliability for high-speed rail travel in India. UNI AJ RN
