JPJ recalls 8,322 Kia, Yamaha, Mercedes-Benz vehicles

PUTRAJAYA - The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has recalled 8,322 Kia, Yamaha and Mercedes-Benz vehicles for inspection following defects to the structure, equipment or systems.
Its director-general, Aedy Fadly Ramli said that the Kia vehicle involved in the recall was 5,123 units of the Rio UB 2010 to 2017 model, suspected to have the risk of shortcircuit that can cause its Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) to catch fire. A total of 1,649 units of Yamaha MT09 and 1,369 units of Tracer 9 GT from November 2021 to Februari 2025 are being recalled for improper functioning Throttle Position Sensors (TPS), while 149 units of the Yamaha Tenere 700 model from 2023 to 2024 are being recalled for clutch problems. - AFP file photo for illustration purpose only
Also, 1,649 units of Yamaha MT09 and 1,369 units of Tracer 9 GT from November 2021 to Februari 2025 are being recalled for improper functioning Throttle Position Sensors (TPS), while 149 units of the Yamaha Tenere 700 model from 2023 to 2024 are being recalled for clutch problems.
A total of 32 Mercedes-Benz cars, model S 580 e, GLC 300 4MATIC, EQS 500, AMG SL 43, EQE 53 and EQS 53 from 2023 and 2025 are being recalled for improperly installed fuse boxes.
"The recall is important to avoid crashes due to defects,' he said in a statement, adding that owners would be contacted by the respective manufacturers to coordinate inspection slots.
"All owners with affected models are asked to plan ahead to enable the recall and inspection to be done as soon as possible.
"For further information, owners can contact or visit any sales and service centre,' he said.
Aedy Fadly also said that all components affected will be replaced with the costs borne by the manufacturer.
"The JPJ will monitor the process and remains committed to ensure all vehicles involved undergo inspection and are certified safe,' he added. - BERNAMA

The Dutch driver, who won his fourth title in a row last year, has a contract to 2028 but is wanted by both Mercedes and Aston Martin and has performance clauses that make an early exit possible. Verstappen's importance is fundamental. The most sought-after driver on the grid is an absolute number one in a team struggling to find anyone else who can get even close to him on the track. The champion has scored 165 of his team's 172 points in 12 races so far this season and has had three teammates in less than a year. But he is only third in the championship, his hopes of a fifth crown this season receding fast with a hefty 69 points now between him and McLaren's leader Oscar Piastri. If Verstappen leaves, whose seat does he take? Will it be his old Mercedes foe George Russell or Italian 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli? And where will they go? Horner had once been seen as the glue that bound a winning team, the young leader of a group whose success confounded those who dismissed them as just an energy drink brand, and shook up the sport. Then, after Red Bull won eight drivers' titles and six constructors' championships and 124 races, the empire began to fall apart. The death of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in October 2022 removed a key pillar of support for Horner and led to reports of a power struggle between the team's Austrian and Thai owners. Then in early 2024, after the most dominant season in the sport's history with Red Bull taking 21 wins in 22 races and Max Verstappen the third of his four titles, Horner faced allegations of misconduct from a female employee. He denied them, and was cleared after an investigation, but that was not the end of the story for a man in office since 2005, the only principal Red Bull have had since entering the sport as constructors. Some paddock regulars called time on Horner even then, seeing his position as untenable, but the 51-year-old pulled through and seemed to have cemented himself back in position. Married to Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell, Horner enjoyed his own celebrity and has been a main man in the popular "Drive to Survive" Netflix docu-series, ever combative with sparring partner Toto Wolff at Mercedes. Verstappen's father Jos was in the opposing camp. He called for Horner to go, saying his presence would tear the team apart, and Adrian Newey -- the star designer who has won titles with multiple teams -- announced his departure to Aston Martin. Sporting director Jonathan Wheatley left to become principal of Sauber, guiding them to the podium with Nico Hulkenberg at Silverstone last weekend, and aerodynamics head Rob Marshall joined now-champions McLaren. STOP THE ROT Red Bull, who have had two periods of dominance with Sebastian Vettel between 2010-13 and Verstappen 2021-24, are now fourth overall in the championship and the slide could continue. Horner was a big advocate of Red Bull making their own engine, a massive challenge against the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari, and bringing everything under one roof at Milton Keynes. The Briton admitted at the weekend, however, that it was unlikely to be the pick of the field. "To expect us to be ahead of Mercedes next year... it would be embarrassing for Mercedes if we were, or for any manufacturer," he said. Faced with the loss of title-winning personnel, the possible departure of their star driver and the lingering controversy, Red Bull acted. Other big questions now revolve around whether French successor Laurent Mekies can stop the rot, how long he might stay in the job and who might ultimately step in. And where might Horner end up? Some media reports have already spoken of Ferrari interest in Horner. The shake-up at Red Bull could be just the start of a whirlwind summer in Formula One. Volkswagen US deliveries fall as Trump tariffs bite
FRANKFURT: Europe's largest automaker Volkswagen said Wednesday that sales into the United States had taken a hit, underscoring the impact of President Donald Trump's drastic trade measures. Total vehicle deliveries into North America fell almost seven percent in the first half of the year, the German group said, even as overall deliveries worldwide notched a rise of 1.3 percent. In the three months to June -- a period dominated by the fallout of Trump announcing 25-percent tariffs on cars in late March and further sweeping duties in April -- deliveries to North America plunged 16.2 percent. In China, a key market where European carmakers are struggling against the electric models of local competitors such as BYD, first-half deliveries fell just over two percent. Marco Schubert, board member for sales at the firm, said the declines were 'expected' and that 'gains in South America and Europe more than offset' the impact. Trump has announced a wide range of duties in a bid to boost US manufacturing, but promptly suspended the implementation of many of them before inviting countries to seek trade deals after markets plunged worldwide. Though April's 'Liberation Day' tariffs have been paused until August 1, a 25-percent tariff on imported cars that are not largely made within North America remains in force. Carmakers have rushed to find ways to minimise the impact of the levies, with high-end automaker Mercedes-Benz on Monday saying it had delayed some US deliveries in the expectation of tariffs coming back down. Stuttgart-based Porsche reported Tuesday a 10-percent rise in its first-half North American sales, saying it had plentiful stocks in the region and that increased import tariffs had offered a degree of 'protection' for its cars. Red Bull sack team chief Horner after two decades in charge
CHRISTIAN Horner is to leave his role as Red Bull team principal with immediate effect after 20 years, the Formula One team announced on Wednesday. The 51-year-old Englishman has occupied the role ever since the team started out in the championship. He oversaw a period of dominance by the team with eight world titles won and the drivers' championship claimed eight times, with Max Verstappen winning the past four titles, and six constructors' crowns. However, Horner's fortunes have dipped in the past 18 months after being accused of sexual harassment and coercive, controlling behaviour by a female employee. Although Horner, whose wife in former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell stood by him during the testing time, was cleared twice, there have been rumblings of discontent within the team, several high-profile departures, and their form has tailed off. 'Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday 9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing,' read the statement from Red Bull. Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO Corporate Projects and Investments, paid the departing team chief a fulsome tribute. 'We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years,' he said in a statement. 'With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1. 'Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history.' Horner's departure comes amidst speculation that Verstappen may be tempted to jump ship to Mercedes. Although the 27-year-old Dutchman won the title last year, he only stood on the top step of the podium twice in the final 14 races. Other key figures responsible for Red Bull's dominance have left in the past year-and-a-half. Legendary designer Adrian Newey signed for Aston Martin and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley joined Sauber, who are beginning to show signs of his influence with Nico Hulkenberg claiming his first ever podium finish in last Sunday's British Grand Prix. Verstappen by contrast finished a disappointing fifth, having started on pole. He is clearly unhappy with the car, saying during the race 'this car is just so difficult to drive', which only further served to ferment the talks of a departure. Verstappen is languishing 69 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri at the halfway point of the campaign. Red Bull are fourth in the constructors' standings, 288 points behind leaders McLaren with Ferrari and Mercedes also ahead of them in the standings.
