PeterLabs shares jump 43pct to fresh high amid director misconduct probe
The counter opened lower at 37 sen, down 3.90 per cent from Wednesday's close of 38.5 sen, before rebounding sharply to a morning high of 55 sen, up nearly 43 per cent. As at press time, 4.42 million shares had changed hands.
Yesterday, PeterLabs announced that the company and its subsidiary Thye On Tong Trading Sdn Bhd had initiated legal proceedings against its suspended executive director Datuk Loh Saw Foong and another director Datin Lin Ching Yein.
This follows earlier disclosures made on May 13 and May 26, 2025, regarding Loh's suspension. The group is seeking various declaratory reliefs and damages as part of the legal action.
PeterLabs' share price rally began on April 8, when the stock was trading at 18.5 sen. At its current price, the stock has gained 132.43 per cent in just over seven weeks.
On April 21, the stock jumped to 29.5 sen, with trading volume spiking to 22.87 million shares, the highest in at least two years.
This followed a raid by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on PeterLabs' offices as part of an investigation into alleged misconduct involving Loh and Lin.
PeterLabs logged its previous all-time high of 37 sen per share on April 5, 2019.
The group, which manufactures and distributes animal health and nutrition products, has yet to detail the potential operational impact of the legal developments.
For the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2024, PeterLabs' net profit fell 9.5 per cent to RM667,000 from RM737,000 a year earlier, on higher administrative and distribution costs.
The group said the decline was largely due to lower operating profit, which dropped 59.7 per cent year-on-year to RM631,000, despite relatively stable revenue.
Revenue for the quarter slipped 2.0 per cent to RM45.37 million from RM46.29 million previously, mainly due to weaker sales from the trading segment, which recorded a pre-tax loss of RM162,000.
For the full financial year, PeterLabs posted a net profit of RM2.84 million, down 17.5 per cent from RM3.45 million in 2023, while revenue dropped 5.5 per cent to RM176.03 million from RM186.21 million.
The group has changed its financial year end from Dec 31 to June 30, with the next reporting period covering 18 months from Jan 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

Some workers take on two jobs, delay marriage to cope with living costs
KUALA LUMPUR: The minimum wage rate of RM1,700 has brought some relief to young workers, but some say it remains inadequate to cope with the rising cost of living, especially for those residing in urban areas. A report by Utusan Malaysia found that employees are being forced to make adjustments to their lifestyles to make ends meet. These include holding down two jobs, bringing packed meals to work, cooking at home, and even postponing major life plans such as marriage. Mohammad Noriman Ahmad Zarkhoni, 22, is among those feeling the pinch. He works as both a food delivery rider and a factory operator, as his RM1,500 income from delivery work alone is not enough to cover his monthly expenses. Although the dual workload is exhausting, he said he has little choice. "Time management is crucial to avoid feeling overwhelmed. So far, I'm managing. "However, I do hope there will be an improvement in the minimum wage, especially since the cost of living in the capital is much higher than in rural areas," he said. Similarly, 25-year-old Muhd Rafiq Ridzuan Zainatul Rahman said his income as a food delivery rider is not enough to save for a wedding, forcing him to delay his marriage plans. "The intention to marry is there, but since my savings are still insufficient, I've chosen to continue saving to cover the cost of the wedding ceremony in the future. "I think postponing it is the best decision for now, considering the rising cost of living. I'll need to work longer in order to save enough," he said. Thaqif Adib Marozi, 23, said he also brings his own meals to work but only has time to cook on weekends due to a packed weekday schedule. "On weekdays, I usually eat just once a day and opt for the cheapest meals available. I hope the prices of raw ingredients won't continue to rise," he said. On July 23, the Human Resources Ministry announced that the full implementation of the RM1,700 minimum monthly wage will take effect on Aug 1. It will apply to all employers, regardless of the number of employees. Failure to comply with the Minimum Wage Order under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 is an offence punishable by a fine of up to RM10,000 per employee.

The recognition was presented during the closing dinner of the IEM YES National Summit 2025 at Theatre Hotel, Kuching, which gathered some 300 young engineers from across the country. The Sabah delegation was led by IEM Sabah Vice Chairman Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, along with YES Sabah Chairman Lee Tze Yei and Immediate Past Chairman Ag. Khairul Kamaludin. A total of 17 enthusiastic delegates from YES Sabah and four student representatives from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) represented the state at the summit. Nell from the IEM UMS Student Section was selected as one of five vocalists to perform the newly-composed theme song 'We Are Engineers', showcasing Sabah's talent on the national stage. RM5,000 venture brings in RM1 million yearly

Kota Kinabalu: With just RM5,000 young Sabah entrepreneur and athlete Jonathan Wong built a thriving aquaculture business within just nine years and whose yearly revenue now exceeds RM1 million. For this, he was presented with a 'Penternak Ikan Jaya' award by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the closing of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 at Sabah International Convention Centre, Sunday. Among Jonathan's innovations is cultured duckweed as a key ingredient in fish feed, a breakthrough that earned him the Most Outstanding Commercial Collaboration Award in Eskpo Kecemerlangan Reka Cipta (Excocipta) 2024. Jonathan represented Malaysia in international long jump competitions. He has won numerous major awards, including two gold medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix and making it into the Paralympic finals twice, bringing glory to the nation.
