SHC issues notice, seeks govt response over PECA Act petition
The Sindh High Court has issued a notice to the federal government and sought a response regarding a petition against the
PECA
Act within two weeks.
The two-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Sindh High Court Justice Mohammad Shafi Siddiqui, heard the petition challenging the PECA Act.
The court inquired, "What is wrong with this law? Shouldn't anyone who spreads false news face punishment?"
The petitioner's lawyer, Barrister Ali Tahir, raised the fundamental question of who determines what is false or true. Chief Justice remarked that not all decisions are made by the courts; some are made by authorities. "You also have the right to appeal against the authorities' decisions."
Barrister Ali Tahir argued that such decisions should be made by the court as they involve fundamental rights. The Chief Justice responded, saying if this is a matter of fundamental rights, then the case should be heard by a constitutional bench.
Barrister Ali Tahir cited the Attock Cement case, where the court had decided that regular benches could review the constitutional validity of any law.
The court issued a notice to the federal government and directed that a response be submitted within two weeks, adjourning the hearing for two weeks.
Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), along with civil society and journalistic organisations,
challenged
the PECA Amendment Act 2025 in the Lahore High Court.
Opposition Leader of the Punjab Assembly, Ahmed Bachhar, along with others, filed the petition against the PECA Act 2025 through Advocate Azhar Siddique. The petition has named the provincial government, the Chief Secretary, and others as respondents.
The petition argues that the PECA Amendment Act violates Article 19-A of the Constitution. It states that the Act does not define "fake news," allowing authorities to label any news as fake and take action on political grounds.
According to the petition, the amended Act requires journalists to disclose their news sources, which is a violation of journalistic ethics. The petition requests the court to declare the PECA Amendment Act unconstitutional and annul it. Additionally, it urges the court to halt any actions under the Act until a final decision is made.

KARACHI: In the wake of a daring daylight robbery and the killing of two jewellers in Korangi, Karachi's trader community expressed outrage over what they call a total collapse of law enforcement in the megacity. President of the Organisation of Small Traders and Cottage Industries Karachi, Mehmood Hamid alleged that the government had completely failed in protecting businessmen and called for immediate permission to provide arms licences to traders for self-defense. Mehmood Hamid also questioned the priorities of law enforcers, taking aim at a recent statement by the DIG Traffic who proposed heavy fines on motorcyclists to curb road violations. 'You say high penalties deter crime— then why are the killers and robbers roaming free despite death being the ultimate punishment?' He said there's no fear of the law, because there is no enforcement of the law. 'As long as corrupt and complicit officers are not held accountable, the rule of law will remain a hollow slogan.' The atmosphere in the market was heavy with grief as traders gathered to mourn their colleagues and express anger at the government. Local market leaders including Noor Ali Abbasi, Waqar Siddiqui, Muhammad Yaseen, and others joined the visit, voicing support for stronger security measures and full compensation for the affected shopkeepers. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Deputy General Secretary Younus Barai, who also visited the families of the deceased, backed the demand for compensation. JI allowed to stage ‘Balochistan March' protest outside LPC
LAHORE: The two-day negotiations between Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and the Punjab government concluded successfully on Wednesday, resulting in an agreement allowing the participants of the Haq Do Balochistan Long March to stage a peaceful protest and set up a camp outside the Lahore Press Club. A key outcome of the talks was the decision to initiate formal negotiations between a high-powered federal government committee and JI Balochistan Chief Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman over the demands of the march. The announcement was made at a joint press conference addressed by JI Naib Ameer Liaqat Baloch and Punjab Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. They were joined by JI Secretary General Ameerul Azeem, Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, Punjab Ministers Salman Rafique and Sohail Bhatti, JI Punjab Central Emir Javed Kasuri, and Lahore Emir Ziauddin Ansari. Liaqat Baloch stated that JI and the people of Punjab stand in solidarity with the people of Balochistan and would not compromise on their constitutional rights. He called for a political solution to national issues and a comprehensive national dialogue. Maryam Aurangzeb announced that the federal dialogue committee will comprise ministers Mohsin Naqvi, Jam Kamal, Atta Tarar, PM's Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, the Federal Interior Secretary, and the Special Secretary. ‘Reports that Qasim, Sulaiman have been asked not to come are baseless': PTI
LAHORE: Conflicting statements over whether Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan's sons, Qasim and Sulaiman, will participate in the planned August 5 protest in Pakistan have sparked political debate and fuelled media speculation, prompting a formal clarification from the party. Earlier this week, journalists reporting from outside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail quoted Khan, currently imprisoned on serious corruption charges linked to a UK-based money laundering case, as saying that his sons would neither return to Pakistan nor take part in any protests. This statement, attributed directly to the PTI founder, was swiftly picked up and widely circulated by national media outlets. However, the PTI has since rejected the reports, labelling them misleading and 'deliberately spread to create confusion and undermine the protest movement.' In a written statement, PTI Central Secretary of Information Sheikh Waqas Akram categorically denied that Khan had asked his sons not to come to Pakistan. 'The reports that Qasim and Sulaiman have been asked not to come are baseless,' he said. 'They will come to Pakistan; the only matter pending is the confirmation of travel dates.' He emphasised that the former prime minister's sons intend to support the ongoing political struggle and participate in the protest demonstrations, rejecting speculation that family disagreements or security concerns were behind their absence. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari mocked the PTI's protest preparations, declaring the August 5 demonstration 'a flop before it even began.' In a statement issued Wednesday, Bukhari remarked, 'Phuppo (aunty)'s wish did not come true, and the nephews are not coming,' a reference to the party's internal dynamics. She accused Imran Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, of anticipating the protest's failure and suggested that even close relatives had lost confidence in the movement. 'When the so-called revolution does not even have the support of the leader's children, how can it succeed?' she said. 'The current PTI leadership doesn't seem interested in the protest either.' Bukhari also shifted focus to alleged financial irregularities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's local governments, claiming that over Rs354 billion in misappropriated funds had been identified. She criticised PTI leaders for championing anti-corruption rhetoric while allegedly presiding over record levels of corruption during the past 12 years. 'Those now being declared ineligible were part of a failed mutiny. Instead of expressing remorse for the May 9 incidents, they continue to defend them — a deeply shameful stance,' she added.
