Cable theft causes disruption, major delays in KTMB train services
KTMB in a statement said among the affected locations were the Tapah Road – Sungkai (KM250.5) route with approximately 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting – Bukit Merah – Bagan Serai (KM87.25) with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat – Bukit Mertajam (KM15.5) with 40 metres affected.
The incident disrupted train operations, causing significant delays of between 80 and 115 minutes involving the following services; EP9172 (KL Sentral – Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth – Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth – KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar – KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat – Padang Besar).
In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh – Butterworth – Ipoh route was also affected, with average delays of 30 minutes.
KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms.
KTMB chief operating officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha in the same statement said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year.
"This type of theft amounts to sabotage of railway infrastructure and could threaten the safety of hundreds of passengers while also crippling public transportation," he said.
As a mitigation measure, KTMB announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network, involving an estimated cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas.
Among the planned improvements are installing manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, enhancing surveillance and prevention infrastructure including CCTV cameras and drones, and installing anti-climb security fencing.
Additionally, he said monitoring and patrols by KTMB auxiliary police with cooperation from the police would be intensified in hotspot areas to curb theft.
"We (KTMB) would like to call for the public's cooperation to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to combat such crime.
"We also apologise for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and remain committed to ensuring train service safety and reliability in the interest of the people and the country," he added.
Since 2024, total losses from cable theft in the northern sector has reached RM1.44 million, comprising RM1.28 million in 2024 and RM162,000 as of March 2025.

No stations closed tomorrow, says KTMB refuting message circulating on social media
IPOH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) has refuted that its Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and Kuala Lumpur stations will be closed Saturday (July 26), following an alleged notice circulating on social media. In response to a query by a user on its official Facebook page comment section Frida (July 25), the KTMB admin responded that there had been no official announcement from the management. 'At the moment, there has been no official notification from the management regarding this matter. "Any latest updates will be shared from time to time through KTMB's official media channels,' the response read. The alleged notice said that the BNM and Kuala Lumpur KTM stations would be closed from 9am to 5pm Saturday. The notice also said that trains would not stop at these stations during the closure period. The circulation of the notice comes ahead a mass rally expected to take place in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. Earlier, acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said no roads would be closed in the capital city ahead of the 'Turun Anwar' rally. More than 2,000 police officers and personnel will be stationed at all key gathering points, including Sogo shopping mall, Masjid Jamek, Masjid Negara and Pasar Seni, from 11am. The rally is anticipated to draw 15,000 participants and is expected to march to Dataran Merdeka at 2pm. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail previously said the police would facilitate the rally following a Federal Court ruling on July 1 that struck down Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as unconstitutional, meaning organisers are no longer legally required to notify authorities in advance.

Stricter action needed as cable thefts rampant, says Loke
PUTRAJAYA: Stricter action should be taken against cable thieves whose crimes have resulted in setbacks at the sites of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Loke said cable thefts should not be treated as just a normal case of theft, as they involve national security. "This cable theft issue is not limited to the ECRL project. As I have previously disclosed, KTMB has experienced various delays due to similar incidents. "I am urging the police to act firmly. I have openly called on the police to pursue this not merely as a regular theft case, as this involves public safety. It affects public order and poses a threat to national security. "Stricter legal action under more severe laws needs to be taken. However, I leave it to the wisdom of the police to determine the appropriate course of action. But we cannot treat this as just a normal case of theft," he said at a press conference here today. It was reported that the target to complete the much-touted ECRL project by December next year is facing an unexpected obstacle following the theft of signalling equipment and communication cables. Over 1,200m of signalling cables were reported stolen along its alignment, with 81 outdoor transformer units also removed. According to Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) Sdn Bhd, the thieves used non-professional cutting tools to complete the job hastily and even brought their transportation. Loke said the authorities will implement mitigation measures to ensure greater safety at the site, and he had also contacted the home minister on the issue.
