Mamelodi Sundowns to freshen up before kicking off pre-season training at home

Mamelodi Sundowns will officially kick off their pre-season on July 21 and focus on honing their skills at home in South Africa.
Unlike previous seasons, Sundowns will refrain from international travel and have opted for a domestic pre-season. It will mark a fresh start for a team that endured a lengthy season filled with highs and lows.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso, who has been in charge for approximately six months, has faced intense scrutiny following a heart-wrenching defeat in the CAF Champions League final against Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
Despite the criticism, which notably raised questions about Cardoso's decision to omit captain Themba Zwane from both legs of the final, the Sundowns management has publicly reaffirmed its support for the coach.

Cardoso's tactical nous was on display during Sundowns' campaign in the FIFA Club World Cup, where the team competed fiercely against elite clubs including Ulsan HD, Borussia Dortmund, and Fluminense. Despite finishing third in their group with four points and narrowly missing out on a spot in the knockout phase, Sundowns' tenacity against higher-profile opponents has been viewed positively by the club's executives.
Management has expressed satisfaction with Cardoso's work to date and is reportedly prepared to back him during the upcoming transfer window. They aim to bolster the squad in a bid to secure another shot at the elusive CAF Champions League title.
One player strongly linked with Sundowns is Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien. There are also reports suggesting that management is exploring talent from the South American and European markets.
Within the squad, there is a growing belief in Cardoso's capabilities, and players are optimistic about the upcoming season. The pressure is mounting on the Portuguese coach to deliver not only the customary league title, but also additional silverware to a trophy cabinet that is rapidly filling.
One of the standout stars of the last season, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, has attracted attention from abroad following a stellar performance in the league, where he ended as the top goal scorer. His impressive efforts at the FIFA Club World Cup have further solidified his place on the radar of European scouts.
Latest reports indicate that Turkish giants Trabzonspor have taken a keen interest in the 26-year-old Brazilian forward, who showcased remarkable vision and striking ability throughout the tournament. They are reportedly looking to secure his services this summer, indicating that Costa's tenure with Sundowns could be entering its final stage.

Kaizer Chiefs must do their bit to support their fans in the transfer window
Mihlali Baleka | Published 7 hours ago You have to feel for the Kaizer Chiefs fanbase. They raise their hopes of club making marquee signings with every passing transfer window, only to be let down. Chiefs blew lukewarm last season as they won the Nedbank Cup, and disappointedly finished outside the Top 8 in the Betway Premiership. Coach Nasreddine Nabi had bemoaned that their shortcomings were due to their inferior squad depth - hence they needed to beef up during this window. Nabi emphasised that the scouting process had already started during the season as this would be a make or break campaign for the club and the technical team. As such, when Nabi was caught on camera attending some matches during the off-season alongside head scout Thembela Maliwa, expectations ran high from their fanbase. But boy, those are yet to come into fruition - Chiefs are yet to make any notable 'top signings' as the bulk of the highly rated players have gone to their crosstown rivals. Orlando Pirates have beaten their nemesis to two marquee signings - Sipho Mbule and Oswin Appollis - who've been heavily linked with Chiefs. Mbule with all his ill-discipline issues remains a gem of a footballer, having proven his skillset from his day at SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United. With all his flaws, the Chiefs fanbase were ready to welcome him to the Taung Village as they reckoned that he'd be the rightful gamechanger the team needed. The Chiefs hierarchy will probably never reveal whether or not the club had made contact with Mbule's agent Mike Makaab who admitted that he offered him to the club. Of course, it would be naive to think that a team revolves around one player. Hence, Chiefs will be confident that they'll make good signings, and not necessarily the right ones. But no one from the already confirmed new quintet - Ethan Chislett, Thabiso Monyane, Flavio Silva, Paseka Mako and Nkanyiso Shinga - bring Mbule's pedigree to the club. Trio Chislett, Silva and Shinga were all signed from overseas-based clubs - England, Indonesia and Portugal - hence they are largely gambles. They could bring about the needed reinforcements at Chiefs if they quickly adapt and adhere to Nabi's philosophy which needed tried and tested players, instead of gamblers. The duo of Mako and Monyane might be quality players in their own rights, but their struggles at Pirates are a cause for concern. They didn't make an impact in their previous club last season, owing to eventualities such as injuries, form and suspensions- something that they'll unlikely not be immune to at Chiefs as well. What will even be stressful for a discerning Chiefs fan is that whenever they've signed a free-agent who played for their arch-rivals, it never seems to work out as well. Think Gaston Sirino - the Uruguayan arrived with a lofty billing at Chiefs last season after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns, but he never made the team quite tick, to be honest. Except for scoring the opening goal in the 2-1 win over Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, there was nothing to write home about on Sirino's season to be frank. He was a shadow of his old self, appearing to turn up only when he feels like, while the reported burst up he had with Nabi didn't help his cause either. Of course, Mako and Monyane could still turn out to be ideal signings for Chiefs if their fortunes turn out otherwise. But the Chiefs fanbase is still eager for strong signings. It's been reported that Siphesihle Ndlovu has signed for the team on a three year-deal. However, for all his impeccable midfield abilities, which include cleaning up for teammates, he's not the sort of player that can win games for Chiefs. He thrives behind the scenes! Chiefs' head honchos are away with the team in their tour of the Netherlands, but Chiefs' fans will be hoping that they are plotting behind the scenes for top signings. Yes, sometimes clubs do break the bank for a player, only for the move not to work out, but I am sure Chiefs supporters will be satisfied knowing that the club did their part.

Orlando Pirates: Why Mbule is two players in one
Orlando Pirates' 2025/26 Betway Premiership season will feature one of South Africa's most popular players, Sipho Mbule. The 27-year-old joined the Buccaneers after a controversial exit from Mamelodi Sundowns due to alleged misconduct. Mbule is one of 10 new Orlando Pirates signings, along with Oswin Appollis, Sihle Nduli, and Sinoxolo Kwayiba. Kaizer Chiefs to make an announcement Sipho Mbule takes a fitness test before preseason training with Orlando Pirates. Image: orlandopirates/Instagram Ask any football coach around the world what abilities they look for in a new signing. The likely answer is a player who can play in multiple positions. Kaizer Chiefs agree to sign Velebayi and Baartman, but… This is what new Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will get from Mbule. Born in Bethlehem, Free State, Mbule began his career at SuperSport United's juniors before making his professional debut at the same club. This was also the same setup where Mbule learned to play two different positions in midfield: central midfield, also known as the number eight role or creative midfield. Additionally, Mbule can also show his talent in the attacking midfield position, also known as the number 10 role.
