Colts Get Unfortunate Update on Potential Trey Hendrickson Trade Talks
Colts Get Unfortunate Update on Potential Trey Hendrickson Trade Talks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cincinnati Bengals and star defensive end Trey Hendrickson are entrenched in one of the ugliest contract disputes in recent memory. Advertisement According to the former New Orleans Saint, the Bengals promised to give him a pay raise if he had another dominant season and he did exactly that. Hendrickson finished with 17.5 sacks for the second straight season and was a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year. Now, despite solidifying his status as one of the five best defensive players in football, Cincinnati is still playing hardball. Hendrickson hasn't shown up to any team activities so far this summer and he and the team have gotten into multiple battles with PR statements and media interviews. The relationship has been tumultuous to say the least, but for the time being things look to be improving. Advertisement Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that Hendrickson and the team have reengaged in contract discussions. We've seen hundreds of twists and turns in this seemingly never ending saga, so things could still turn sideways again, but for now the sides are peaceful. This is unfortunate news for a number of teams who were hoping to acquire his services, but especially the Indianapolis Colts. They had one of the worst pass rushes in the league last year, so they were banking on being able to add one of the best in the sport. They have a superstar on the defensive line in DeForest Buckner, but there is currently nobody in Indianapolis who can reap the benefits of his dominance. Advertisement Hendrickson would have been a perfect fit and instantly transformed the Colts into one of the best pass rushing teams in the league. There will likely be more drama between the him and the Bengals this summer, so the Colts just need to hope that there is more friction. Colts Acquire Bengals' Superstar Pass Rusher in Recent Trade Idea
Colts Acquire Bengals' Superstar Pass Rusher in Recent Trade Idea originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the most captivating stories of the NFL offseason has been the Cincinnati Bengals' contract dispute with Trey Hendrickson. Advertisement The star pass rusher was reportedly promised an extension if he continued his stellar play last season, which he did by recording 17.5 sacks for the second straight year. However, now that the rubber has met the road, the Bengals are playing hardball and refuse to pay the Defensive Player of the Year finalist what he deserves. This has led to Hendrickson being absent from mandatory minicamp and requesting a trade from the team. This is the second straight year that the former New Orleans Saint has requested a trade and although Cincinnati has been unwilling to engage in trade talks so far, he has a few potential suitors. Advertisement Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson (91) reacts after sacking Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (10) during the first half at SoFi A. Vasquez-Imagn Images One of the most obvious potential landing spots is the Indianapolis Colts who are in desperate need of pass rush help. The team was in the bottom quarter of the league with just 36 team sacks last season, so Hendrickson would be an instant boost. Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report listed a few three-team trades that would shake up the NFL and one of them included the Bengals star making the move to Indianapolis. 'Hendrickson can pair with last year's first-round pick, Laiatu Latu, while this year's second-round selection, JT Tuimoloau, can be the team's long-term rotational option. DeForest Buckner remains an outstanding interior defender, but he's been somewhat banged up the last couple of seasons and his interior pass-rush production dipped last year,' he said. Advertisement The only negative aspect of this trade for the Colts would be having to move on from Buckner. He has been one of the premier interior defenders in the league for a long time and it may be counterintuitive to move on from him to bring in another star pass rusher. There may be alternate routes to acquiring Hendrickson, so Indianapolis would need to weigh whether it makes sense to add one of the best pass rushers in the league while simultaneously giving one away.
