Naidu calls for collective efforts to protect, nurture schools

The Hindu10-07-2025
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday appealed to people to collectively protect and nurture schools, 'which are modern temples of learning.'
The Chief Minister was addressing a huge gathering of students, parents, and teachers at the Mega Parent-Teacher Meeting 2.0 held at the ZP High School in Kothacheruvu of Sri Sathya Sai district. Mr. Naidu reiterated his government's commitment to usher in a knowledge-driven, morally groomed student community. Expressing a word of praise for Education Minister Nara Lokesh for 'successfully implementing the Mega PTM across 61,000 schools in the State,' the Chief Minister said that the landmark event saw the participation of 2.28 crore people. He said it would qualify for the Guinness World Record.
Focusing on the importance of families in shaping a student's success, Mr. Naidu narrated a personal anecdote, crediting his wife Bhuvaneshwari for Lokesh's academic success at the Cambridge and Stanford, as 'I was unable to attend parent meetings due to official duties.' Acknowledging the importance of holistic progress cards, the Chief Minister urged for wider parental involvement in tracking students' multiple indicators of health, behaviour, and studies. 'The students and youth should not limit their prowess to getting jobs, but also extend their vistas and join politics and serve society,' Naidu said.
Elaborating on the Thalliki Vandanam initiative, Mr. Naidu said that several lakhs of mothers had been supported to educate their children with dignity.
The Chief Minister announced ₹2 crore for the construction of a stadium in district headquarters Puttaparthi, saying that the State government was focussed on strengthening and expanding infrastructure and resources in government schools.
Drug trafficking
The Chief Minister vowed to crush the menace of drug use and trafficking in the State, warning that the properties of offenders will be seized and welfare benefits withdrawn. 'It must be clear that there should be no future for drug peddling and consumption of drugs as they are the enemies to the development of youth,' Mr. Naidu asserted, faulting the previous YSR Congress Party government of encouraging ganja cultivation in the North Andhra region and its largescale peddling.
Blaming the previous government for irresponsible and negligent handling of the education sector, Mr. Naidu said that his government could successfully conduct a Mega DSC to appoint 16,347 teachers in a fool-proof and transparent mode.
Later, the Chief Minister along with Mr. Lokesh took part in the community lunch with students, parents and teachers. District Collector T.S. Chetan, SP V. Ratna, district MLAs and senior leaders of the Telugu Desam Party were present.

Japan's SMEs ready to adapt to Trump tariffs

TOKYO: Small and medium-sized firms like Mitsuwa Electric that form the backbone of Japan 's economy have weathered many storms over the decades, and company president Yuji Miyazaki is hopeful they will also withstand Donald Trump . As part of a campaign against friend and foe, the US president has threatened 25 percent tariffs on imports of Japanese goods from August 1, having already imposed tough levies on its vehicles, steel and aluminium. "I'm not worried too much, because if American companies can't produce parts on their own, they have no choice but to import those parts regardless of tariffs," the descendant of the firm's founder said. Live Events With 100 employees, Mitsuwa Electric is not a household name. But like millions of other SMEs that account for 99.7 percent of Japan's companies, it is world-class in its specialist niche. It began making light bulb filaments and now produces coils, rods, needles, plates, pipes and wires for a range of goods including car lights, photocopiers and X-ray machines. In 2022 it won a Guinness World Record for the smallest commercially available metal coil, with a diameter around half that of a human hair. Mitsuwa's customers are across Asia, Europe and North America and include Japanese engineering giant Toshiba and Toyota-affiliated parts maker Koito Manufacturing. Miyazaki said the impact of US tariffs on the company's business is limited so far, with one auto sector customer asking it to lower prices. "All we can do is to adapt to any changes in the business environment," Miyazaki said. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has sent his tariffs envoy Ryosei Akazawa to Washington seven times since April to try to win relief from the tariffs. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was due to meet Ishiba and Akazawa on Friday in Tokyo. But the prime minister's apparently maximalist strategy of insisting all tariffs are cut to zero have been criticised in some parts, especially as August 1 approaches. US-bound exports of Japanese vehicles -- a sector tied to eight percent of Japanese jobs -- tumbled around 25 percent in May and June. The lack of a deal isn't helping Ishiba's popularity ahead of upper house elections on Sunday that may end Ishiba's premiership after less than a year. What bothers Japanese firms is Trump's unpredictability and the complexity of the tariffs, according to government-backed SME support organisation JETRO. Since February, the group has received more than 2,000 enquiries from members about US tariffs, with a flood of requests since June asking for "the latest information" as the deadline approaches. Mitsuwa Electric boss Miyazaki admits worrying about Trump's threat of pharmaceuticals tariffs of 200 percent, or if medical equipment is targeted. Together with its broad product range, the diversification of its customer base has shielded it so far, he said. This is also vital for other firms to survive, said Zenkai Inoue, an SME expert and professor at the Kyushu Institute of Information Sciences. "I'm proposing a 'tricycle strategy', which means you have to have (at least) three customers in different regions," he told AFP. "For SMEs, securing financial stability by asking banks for their funding is important to survive for the time being, then the next step would be expanding their sales channels to other markets," he said. Inoue added that some Japanese firms had been slow to prepare for Trump's tariffs, even after he said he would during his 2024 election campaign. "There was a time when Japanese companies, having heavily relied on the Chinese market, (were) hurt badly by a sudden change in China's policy. But some of them have not learnt a lesson enough from that experience," he said.

These investments, linked to 22 projects, are projected to create 30,899 jobs. The investment proposals cleared by the SIPB are related to sectors like IT, food processing, energy, and tourism. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to develop a symbiotic ecosystem around upcoming industrial projects in Andhra Pradesh, ensuring mutual benefit for industries, local communities, and associated institutions. He noted that such integrated development would not only accelerate industrial growth but also uplift surrounding regions through job creation and institutional linkages. Naidu directed officials to ensure the development of robust infrastructure-roads, ports, airports, and utilities-around all upcoming industrial projects in the state. He stressed that such infrastructure is vital for stimulating economic activity and earning the confidence of local communities and farmers. 'People will part with land only when they are convinced of tangible benefits,' he observed, highlighting the importance of companies adhering to project timelines. Addressing key sectors during the SIPB, meeting, the CM laid special emphasis on integrated planning for tourism development. He instructed officials to design tourism projects with a broader ecosystem approach, expanding activities beyond core attractions to encourage investments.

Naidu lacks sincerity on Polavaram: Ambati

Tadepalli: The YSRCP accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of making hollow claims about the Polavaram project while neglecting Rayalaseema's water needs. Speaking at the party headquarters here on Thursday, former minister Ambati Rambabu said that the Polavaram–Banakacherla project was YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's brainchild, not Naidu's. He criticised Naidu's recent Delhi meeting with Telangana's Chief Minister as a political stunt, yielding no results or official statements. Rambabu said the project lacks approval from the Polavaram Project Authority and Central Water Commission. He alleged that Naidu's focus is on securing kickbacks through mobilisation advances rather than project completion. The project's viability hinges on maintaining a 42-metre water level, but Naidu's agreement to lower it undermines its effectiveness. Rambabu claimed Naidu cannot complete Polavaram by 2027, accusing him of ignoring expert advice for personal gain. He recalled a similar fruitless meeting last year between the two Telugu states' leaders on water issues. The YSRCP leader warned that Naidu is misleading the public on Polavaram and Amaravati, asserting that only YS Rajasekhar Reddy and Jagan Mohan Reddy genuinely worked for Rayalaseema's development. He also condemned Naidu for visiting the HNSS project site only to criticise YSRCP and for police actions against citizens attending Jagan's meetings, labelling it political repression.
