Mettur dam canals opened to cater to irrigation needs
Tourism minister R Rajendran opened the sluice gates of the Stanley Reservoir, allowing water from the Cauvery river to flow out of the dam and into the canals.
"In response to farmers' requests, chief minister M K Stalin had directed the water resources department (WRD) officials to open the west and east bank canals of the Mettur dam for irrigation purposes," the minister said. He added that approximately 45,000 acres of land would benefit, including 16,443 acres in Salem district, 11,327 acres in Namakkal district, and 17,230 acres in Erode district. "I urge the farmers in these three districts to utilise the Cauvery water released through the Mettur east and west bank canals judiciously," he said.
Salem MP T M Selvaganapathy, Rajya Sabha MP SR Sivalingam, and collector R Brindha Devi, among others were present when the sluice gates were opened.

Mumbai: BMC plans pedestrian subway linking metro, racecourse, and Haji Ali parking hub
MUMBAI: In a major step toward improving pedestrian access in South Mumbai, the BMC is planning a dedicated pedestrian subway. This new underground passage will connect the Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking hub at Haji Ali. The objective is to ensure seamless movement between the metro, racecourse, and coastal amenities. The main subway will run from the Nehru Science Centre exit of the Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to Mahalaxmi Racecourse, with a branch extending 120 meters. The main stretch of the subway will be 1 km long and 7.5 meters wide. Two design options are under consideration — one that connects the subway to the car park and another that doesn't. If connected, the subway will have a width of 18 to 25 meters at the preliminary stage. To take this forward, the MMRCL will appoint a consultant for a detailed feasibility and project report. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between BMC and MMRCL to define roles, responsibilities, and obligations. It will now accommodate 1,200 cars. This redesign became necessary after the cancellation of a proposed public parking lot at Amarsons Interchange in Breach Candy. Meanwhile, 70 hectares of open space around the racecourse are being developed by Reliance Industries Limited, making it South Mumbai's largest open space development. Bengaluru Rural district likely to be renamed Bengaluru North to gain brand edge
BENGALURU: After renaming Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South, the state govt is now considering a proposal to rename Bengaluru Rural district as 'Bengaluru North', a move that sources say is aimed at replicating the branding and development benefits seen in the Ramanagara renaming exercise. The proposal is expected to come up for discussion during the state cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Nandi Hills, near Bengaluru, on Wednesday. Officials said the cabinet will also take up a proposal to rename Bagepalli town in Chikkaballapur district as Bhagyanagar. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Bengaluru Rural district was originally part of the undivided Bengaluru district until 1986. It was formally carved out as a separate district on Aug 15, 1986. In 2007, the district was further bifurcated to form Ramanagara district, which has now been renamed as Bengaluru South. Currently, Bengaluru Rural comprises four taluks: Hoskote, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, and Nelamangala. "After the Ramanagara renaming, there has been a strong demand from MLAs of Bengaluru Rural and some Bengaluru ministers. They believe the 'rural' tag is deceiving investment in their district," said a govt source familiar with the matter. There has also been a long-standing demand from certain quarters to rename Bengaluru Rural after 18th-century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan, who was born in Devanahalli, located in the district. Last month, the govt formally approved the decision to rename Ramanagara as Bengaluru South. The move, originally proposed in 2023, had sparked mixed reactions. While some hoped it would bring more infrastructure and attention to the area, others feared it would erase Ramanagara's distinct identity. Despite these concerns, the govt went ahead with the renaming without much public consultation on the implications for the region's cultural and historical identity. The outcome of Wednesday's cabinet discussion will determine whether Bengaluru Rural gets a new name - and, perhaps, a new direction. Centre approves Rs 1,900 crore plan for PM MITRA park in Virudhunagar
CHENNAI: In a significant boost to the state government's ambition to cement its position as India's textile powerhouse, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday announced the approval of a Rs 1,894-crore development plan for the Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park coming up in Virudhunagar district. The 1,052-acre site will host a next-generation textile manufacturing ecosystem focused on technical textiles and integrated processing units. It is one of seven PM MITRA parks being developed nationwide under the centre's flagships scheme aimed at catalysing India's textiles sector with world-class infrastructure, policy support and investment incentives. The project, which was formalised in 2023, is the outcome of prolonged negotiations between Chief Minister M K Stalin's administration and Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh. State Industries Minister T R B Rajaa termed the approval as a big boost for TN's textile sector and called it 'a result of relentless follow-up and collaboration'. Works are targeted for completion by September 2026, with the state government projecting Rs 10,000 crore in investments and creation of one lakh jobs. 'TN is already India's top textile exporter, and now we're scaling up with ambition,' said Rajaa. Planned features include a 15-MLD common effluent treatment plant with zero liquid discharge, a 5-MLD sewage treatment plant, 10,000-bed worker accommodation and 1.3 million sq ft of plug-and-play and built-to-suit factory space. Tamil Nadu joins six other states — Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh — chosen to host PM MITRA parks.
