Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile Choose Luxembourg as Joint Venture Headquarters to Drive European-Wide Space-Based Mobile Broadband Coverage

Business Wire13 hours ago

MIDLAND, Texas & NEWBURY, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vodafone Group and AST SpaceMobile Inc. ('AST SpaceMobile') (NASDAQ: ASTS) today announced that their new joint venture satellite company, SatCo, will be headquartered in Luxembourg, creating a European sovereign integrated satellite service. AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by everyday smartphones, designed for both commercial and government applications.
Luxembourg's strong digital credentials and strategic location provide SatCo with the ideal platform from which to exclusively distribute AST SpaceMobile's broadband satellite services to European mobile network operators under a single turnkey arrangement. SatCo's wholesale offering of direct-to-device mobile broadband satellite services, which complement terrestrial networks, has generated expressions of interest from network operators in 21 EU member states, as well as in other European markets. Commercial services are expected to begin in 2026.
Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile are in close contact with the Luxembourg Government, key European policymakers, EU Member States, and industry stakeholders to advance national and European digital sovereignty by promoting a cohesive space strategy. SatCo will forge private and public sector partnerships that will position Europe as a leader in the provision of direct-to-mobile space-based broadband connectivity. This will provide the region with a secure and resilient digital communications infrastructure for use in any location, including mountains or at sea, at any time.
Together, the companies' joint efforts have already led to a series of groundbreaking achievements in direct-to-device connectivity with everyday smartphones, including the world's first European space-based mobile video call to an unmodified phone from the UK. In addition, the companies, using AST SpaceMobile's space-based mobile broadband network, have demonstrated 4G and 5G capabilities and achieved download speeds of over 20 Mbps to unmodified phones on a 5 MHz channel. The 2025 next generation satellites soon to be launched will enable peak data rates of 120 Mbps.
Margherita Della Valle, CEO of Vodafone, stated: "This is an important initiative for Europe. Our service will ensure that European citizens, businesses, and governments enjoy uninterrupted, ubiquitous mobile broadband connectivity across the whole continent. Europe can take the lead in new direct-to-mobile broadband technology.'
The planned establishment of SatCo was announced in March this year by Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile. This unique solution is being led by Europe, from Luxembourg, and will benefit the EU's Digital Decade 2030 targets.
Mr. Lex Delles, Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy and Tourism of Luxembourg stated: 'The establishment of SatCo's headquarters in Luxembourg further reinforces the key role of our country as a hub to deploy innovative solutions serving the whole EU single market and its citizens. I welcome to Luxembourg AST SpaceMobile, a leading international player joining our thriving space sector, and I am glad that this project continues to strengthen the long-standing relationship between Vodafone and Luxembourg.'
Ms. Elisabeth Margue, Minister delegate to the Prime Minister for Media and Connectivity said: 'Assuring ubiquitous coverage of mobile broadband connectivity for all users in Luxembourg and in areas of Europe is a key objective for the Luxembourg Government. As such, we welcome the decision of Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile to choose Luxembourg as their European headquarters, enriching the connectivity ecosystem by developing innovative services based on terrestrial and satellite infrastructure. We are looking forward to the local deployment and leverage of competencies and skills by the new entity, enabling a commercially successful service deployment on a worldwide basis.'
'With SatCo now based in Luxembourg, Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile are strengthening Europe's position in direct-to-mobile satellite services and advancing digital independence,' said Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile. 'This joint venture supports European digital sovereignty by creating a unified platform to deliver satellite connectivity across the continent. Together, we are building secure, resilient cellular broadband infrastructure to serve Europe's connectivity needs—anywhere, anytime.'
The Luxembourg-headquartered venture will deploy a small network of earth stations that integrate with operators of existing 4G/5G terrestrial networks, providing secure backhaul links, as well as extended coverage across Europe from the AST SpaceMobile satellite constellation in low Earth orbit. This will enable users to switch automatically between space and land-based networks.

BlackRock's Rick Rieder says there is a 'generational opportunity' for income right now

The high levels of income in the bond market right now are a "generational opportunity" for investors, according to BlackRock's Rick Rieder. "I've waited for two decades of my life for some deals," he said in an interview with CNBC, pointing to the years of low interest rates that ended in 2022. Bond yields move inversely to prices. That income is a priority now that bond duration is still no longer the reliable hedge it once was, explained Rieder, the firm's chief investment officer of global fixed income. In other words, fixed income hasn't necessarily offered a ballast against a drop in stock prices. "In a sense, the ability to deliver consistently high coupons to global portfolios can serve as something of a bulwark against equity market drawdowns, especially at a time when duration itself has failed to serve its traditional function," he wrote in the firm's mid-year outlook released Monday. Getting that income doesn't necessarily mean taking excess risk since companies have de-levered, paying down their debt during the post-Covid period, he added. However, the opportunity isn't going to last forever, Rieder told CNBC. He said he anticipates a boost in productivity and innovation from the "greatest technology revolution" that is now underway. That will bring down inflation and, eventually, interest rates, he added. Still, some labor softness could hit the economy in the near term, Rieder noted. Yet, he expects a pretty good second half of the year from a growth perspective — although more toward the last quarter. "A lot of corporate CEOs are sitting and waiting to see what would happen with regard to tariffs, and I think you unlock some of the spend in the capex [capital expenditures] and [research and development]," he said. President Donald Trump 's pause on reciprocal tariffs ends on July 8 and the deadline for a deal between the United States and Europe is on July 9. However, the president recently said he may not adhere to the deadlines, saying, " We can do whatever we want ." Where the opportunities lie The front and the belly of the curve remain the most attractive, said Rieder, who is also the portfolio manager of iShares Flexible Income Active ETF (BINC) . The exchange-traded fund has a 30-day SEC yield of 5.45% and a 0.40% net expense ratio. BINC YTD mountain iShares Flexible Income Active ETF year to date Rieder still favors European credit and peripheral sovereign bonds, like Spain and Italy. The yields are terrific and there isn't much concern about supply, he said. "If you're a dollar investor — and this is something that we also haven't seen in decades — we get a cross-currency swap benefit," Rieder said. "Everybody's trying to hedge their U.S. dollar exposure. Being a dollar investor you actually get the benefit and it's tremendous," he added. "We get an extra 2%, 2.5% benefit for being a lender in Europe and that makes all the difference in the world for a dollar investor." He also likes securitized products in the United States. They make up 35% of BINC's assets, with commercial mortgage-backed securities and non-agency MBS accounting for some of that allocation. Rieder has reduced BINC's allocation to investment-grade bonds, which now make up 7% of the ETF. Instead, he said he'd rather get the income from high-yield bonds or agency MBS, the latter of which has attractive income and is much more liquid than corporate bonds. Biggest risk in the market The biggest risk facing fixed-income investors right now is the rising federal deficit, Rieder said. Concerns about it have fueled volatility in the market, he said The U.S. budget deficit hit $316 billion for the month of May, according to the Treasury Department. "There is the risk we still have to keep doing these [Treasury] auctions," he said. "Long-end interest rates are extremely volatile and sensitive to inflation." While Rieder thinks inflation is coming down, he isn't sure that will happen in the next few months. "Longer term, I think we'll be able to outrun the debt," he said. Near term, "markets tend to sense vulnerability." "I watch every 10-year, 20- or 30-year auction," he added. "In the bond market, to me, it's almost a sigh of relief when they get them done."

How the Stock Market Under Biden Compares to Trump's 2025 Stock Market

Markets generally rise over the long term, but does the political affiliation of presidents matter to your stock portfolio? Be Aware: Check Out: To answer this question, GOBankingRates spoke with two financial experts on how investors should navigate markets when the White House changes hands. While past performance is not indicative of future results, the stock market has generally performed better under Democratic presidents. Not because they're more market-savvy, but rather due to timing — specifically, where the economy stands in the business cycle. According to TD Economics, Democratic presidents have had the benefit of getting elected during the early stages of the economic cycle more often. By contrast, Republican presidents, historically, assumed office near the end of the cycle. To be clear, this is not to suggest markets always perform better under Democrats or poorly under Republicans. In fact, the S&P 500 delivered remarkable returns during President Dwight Eisenhower's presidency and President Donald Trump's first term, both Republicans. Read Next: Under the Biden administration, the S&P 500 appreciated by 55%, based on a report from Morningstar. Not bad, considering he took the helm during a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic that catalyzed a total upheaval across virtually every supply chain. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite delivered a gain of 46%. In 2021, which marked nearly one year of Biden's term, the S&P rose nearly 27%, while the Nasdaq gained about 21%, per CNBC. Markets have been a roller coaster since Trump took office. The S&P 500 reached an all-time high in mid-February, but his controversial tariffs and, more recently, tensions in the Middle East derailed whatever momentum there was. From Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025, through June 26, 2025, the S&P 500 has grown just 2.41%, while the Nasdaq has grown by 2.74%. Linda Jensen, a chartered financial consultant from Heart Financial Group, believes there is no reason to panic — as long as you stick to a long-term approach. 'First, I remind clients that markets dislike uncertainty — but trying to time the market based on politics often leads to missed opportunities,' she said. Instead, Jensen reorients her clients to think about why they're investing in the first place and what their goals are: 'I always bring the conversation back to goals, time horizon and risk tolerance,' she explained. Matt Hylland, a financial planner at Arnold & Mote Wealth Management, shared a similar sentiment: 'Stock markets have rewarded long-term investors, regardless of which party is in the White House.' Hylland advises his clients to focus on what they can control, like having a diversified portfolio and a tax-efficient savings strategy. Jensen also weighed in on where markets could be headed, based on a wide range of factors. Best-case scenario, some of Trump's policies, including the extension of tax cuts, expanded asset depreciation and the introduction of a $15 million estate exemption, might spark new optimism among investors and the business community, which may drive markets forward. Conversely, Jensen warned that 'global tensions, interest rate movements and inflation data will still weigh heavily on performance.' But the bottom line? While elections matter, both experts contend that a long-term investment plan is the best way to stay on track, irrespective of who occupies the White House. 5 Revealing Analyst Questions From Plug Power's Q1 Earnings Call

Plug Power's first quarter results saw revenue growth and operational improvements, but the market reacted negatively to ongoing margin pressure and continued losses. Management attributed the quarter's performance to renewed momentum in the material handling segment and successful commissioning of additional hydrogen production capacity. CEO Andy Marsh highlighted that Plug Power's 'Q1 cash burn was down nearly 50% year-over-year,' due to cost reduction initiatives and improved execution across core business lines. The focus on internal production and inventory management provided some buffer against near-term cost inflation, but new tariffs and policy uncertainty weighed on investor sentiment. Is now the time to buy PLUG? Find out in our full research report (it's free). Revenue: $133.7 million vs analyst estimates of $132 million (11.2% year-on-year growth, 1.3% beat) Adjusted EPS: -$0.20 vs analyst estimates of -$0.20 (in line) Adjusted EBITDA: -$153.2 million vs analyst estimates of -$138.7 million (-115% margin, 10.5% miss) Revenue Guidance for Q2 CY2025 is $160 million at the midpoint, above analyst estimates of $158.1 million Operating Margin: -134%, up from -216% in the same quarter last year Market Capitalization: $1.31 billion While we enjoy listening to the management's commentary, our favorite part of earnings calls are the analyst questions. Those are unscripted and can often highlight topics that management teams would rather avoid or topics where the answer is complicated. Here is what has caught our attention. Bill Peterson (JPMorgan) asked about the implications of changing U.S. tax credits on Plug Power's Texas facility and DOE loan. CEO Andy Marsh acknowledged policy uncertainty, stating that while safe harbor provisions are positive, the company is accelerating construction to qualify and increasingly focusing on European opportunities. Bill Peterson (JPMorgan) also inquired about the status of the electrolyzer order pipeline. Marsh responded that while around $200 million in backlog exists for the year, the scale and complexity of projects mean some closures could extend into 2026. George Gianarikas (Canaccord Genuity) questioned the potential for business divestitures to accelerate profitability. Marsh clarified there are no current plans to sell any business segments. Colin Rusch (Oppenheimer) sought updates on hydrogen production facility performance. Marsh and Jose Luis Crespo reported operational improvements and noted that the Georgia site had its best month yet, with Louisiana's design improvements supporting smoother ramp-up. Eric Stine (Craig Hallum) asked about trends in the material handling segment after a shift to direct sales and price increases. Crespo explained that Plug Power is seeing expansion with both existing and new customers, but higher pricing may lengthen sales cycles. In the coming quarters, the StockStory team will be monitoring (1) the pace and margin profile of large European electrolyzer project conversions from backlog to revenue, (2) the impact of U.S. policy changes and tariffs on domestic demand and cost structure, and (3) Plug Power's ability to sustain lower cash burn and progress toward gross margin breakeven. Execution on further cost reduction initiatives and capital deployment will also be closely watched. Plug Power currently trades at $1.31, up from $0.90 just before the earnings. Is there an opportunity in the stock? The answer lies in our full research report (it's free). Market indices reached historic highs following Donald Trump's presidential victory in November 2024, but the outlook for 2025 is clouded by new trade policies that could impact business confidence and growth. While this has caused many investors to adopt a "fearful" wait-and-see approach, we're leaning into our best ideas that can grow regardless of the political or macroeconomic climate.
