Superman's real-life kryptonite: The incredible shrinking cinema business

There's a new Superman movie in theatres this week and business is, as they say, boffo! ' Superman soars to $[US]122 million, third-biggest box office opening weekend of 2025,' raved Variety, referring to ticket sales in the United States and Canada. (In Australia, the film brought in $8.13 million for the weekend.) If you follow box-office news, it's all very normal: big bucks, records broken, blah blah blah.
But there is one thing in Hollywood that's rarer than a substantive movie role for a female actor over 40, and that's the disclosure of the actual number of tickets a particular film sells on a particular weekend in a box-office report.
That number can lead you into an alternative reality worthy of a David Lynch film. It also explains why going to the movies is so freaking irritating these days.
Now, $US122 million ($187 million) might seem like a respectable haul for an opening weekend. However, if you look up the average cost of a movie ticket in the US, which is $US11 and change, and then do a little maths, you get the number of actual tickets that Superman sold: About 11 million. (The number is actually a lot lower; those big-franchise films get a disproportionate share of their incomes from high-priced Imax showings and the like, but that's another story.)
Let's flash back to the last big Superman movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in 2016. That opened to $US166 million. Here's where we step through the looking glass. Movie ticket prices back then were $US8.50. More maths, and we get … 20 million tickets sold on the opening weekend. In other words, the Superman franchise has lost about half its fan base. Holy Kryptonite, Batman!

Hollywood's biggest secret: despite all the incessant talk about box-office records, ticket sales have been heading south – for decades. Per capita movie-ticket sales were down by a third in the first 20 years of this century. (Australia's admissions have declined similarly, from 92.5 million in 2001 to 55.4 million last year.) The pandemic made things much worse, of course, but the rebound hasn't brought us back.
Fewer ticket sales mean someone has to pay, and it's coming out of the pockets of those among us who still go to see movies on the big screen. It feels a lot like being mugged.
My wife and I went to the swanky Hoyts in Sydney's Entertainment Quarter to see F1: The Movie the other night. Tickets for the 'Xtreme Screen' showing were about $30 – and as I checked out online I saw that Hoyts had added a $5.10 'booking fee' to the order. (That extra 10 cents was a nice touch.)

Fans are up in arms after a beloved TikTok account has been silent for months following a legal firestorm over its use of adorable toys in viral videos. Irish content creator Thea Von Engelbrechten is the brain behind Sylvanian Drama, a TikTok account with more than 2.5 million followers. The account is known for using dolls from Sylvanian Families — also known as Calico Critters in the US — to create soap opera-like storylines, the US Sun reported. Some videos feature the dolls, which are anthropomorphised woodland creatures, passed out drunk, holding weapons, and running over other dolls in cars, among other activities. But von Engelbrechten suddenly stopped posting videos earlier this year, with the last clip being an ad for the Netflix series Squid Game. According to court documents obtained by Vulture, the creator has been dealing with a legal battle for several months after the Epoch Company, a Japanese toy giant that created Sylvanian Families, filed a lawsuit against von Engelbrechten on April 7. The lawsuit accuses von Engelbrechten of copyright infringement and 'creating, publishing, and disseminating online advertising videos' using the dolls without Epoch's permission. Von Engelbrechten has also used the dolls in advertisements with major brands such as Marc Jacobs, Burberry, and Hilton Hotels, according to the lawsuit. Epoch claims von Engelbrechten's videos have caused 'irreparable injury' to its reputation and squandered potential licensing opportunities. 'Defendant is 'working to build Sylvanian Drama's own brand image' as an advertising and content creation service provider at the expense of Epoch's goodwill it has built over decades,' the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit is calling for a formal declaration that von Engelbrechten infringed on its copyright and committed acts of false endorsement. The company is also asking the court to issue an order preventing von Engelbrechten from any further alleged copyright infringement. Statutory damages of up to $150,000 (AU $229,000) per infringed work are being sought along with any profits the creator made from the account. It seems that Epoch has been upset with von Engelbrechten's work for years, with the company sending TikTok a Digital Millennium Copyright Act take-down notice over the account in October 2023, according to the lawsuit. Epoch argued that von Engelbrechten's didn't count as fair use, which resulted in TikTok disabling her account in April 2024. However, von Engelbrechten got her account back after filing a counter-notice because her content counted as parody. Epoch disagreed with this, arguing that the videos didn't carry a message about the dolls nor offer any commentary or criticism about them, according to the lawsuit. After von Engelbrechten's account was brought back, Epoch claims that it tried to reach an amicable resolution for nearly a year. However, von Engelbrechten allegedly doubled 'her efforts to exploit Epoch's copyrights and trademarks for her own commercial gain,' the lawsuit claims. Last year, von Engelbrechten told Marketing Brew that Epoch never reached out requesting a collaboration. 'I'd definitely be interested if they ever wanted to. But it's not something that has happened,' she told the outlet at the time. At the time of writing, von Engelbrechten has yet to formally respond to the lawsuit. After news of the lawsuit came to light, many of von Engelbrechten's followers have come to her defence. 'She's just a girl, don't sue her!' wrote one person on von Engelbrechten's latest TikTok. 'Sylvanian Drama dropping banger after banger only to get sued years later … true genius is never recognised,' wrote another person on X. 'Nooo Sylvanian Drama literally made me want to buy Sylvanian Families at my grown age and now they're getting sued???' tweeted another person. The U.S. Sun has reached out to the Epoch Company and von Engelbrechten for comment.

The Purge creator James DeMonaco has finished the script for the sixth film. Four years after the latest entry in the horror franchise The Forever Purge hit screens, DeMonaco has revealed he has completed a new draft of the sixth movie's screenplay and has given it to Blumhouse head Jason Blum. He told Bloody Disgusting: 'I just finished a script. My producer, Sébastien Lemercier, has read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason.' DeMonaco added he was 'really happy' with the script, and was hoping to start filming the sixth Purge movie either at the end of this year or in 2026. He said: 'I'm really happy with it. I hope they like it. I think it's cool and fun. We're hoping next year would be great to shoot, maybe the end of this year if timing works out. 'But now it's with the powers that be, so we'll see what happens.' While he didn't confirm it was Frank Grillo's Sgt. Leo Barnes - who appeared in 2014's The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year in 2016 - DeMonaco teased a fan-favourite character would be returning for the next film. He said: 'People's favorite character might be coming back, I can say without naming who that is; a couple of people who could be. 'But someone's coming back who I love and I think the audience loves.' DeMonaco - who has written all five previous Purge flicks as well USA's The Purge TV series - added 'real warrior women' would take centre stage in the next film. He said: 'Then we create some real great female heroes in this one. There's some really amazing women. We've had some great women in the past, but real warrior women come forth here in a way that we haven't really explored on Purge night. 'It's been really fun to write. And I'm writing with my wife, so I'm getting a nice female perspective, and that's been really fun.' The Purge is set in a near-future America where all crime is legal for 12 hours every year. The original 2013 flick starred Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane and Rhys Wakefield. In June 2023, DeMonaco said he had finished the first script for the sixth Purge movie. He told Variety: 'It's not completely different than previous movies, but it's a new America that we're entering into. 'In The Forever Purge, America kind of collapsed, and it's really kind of mapped itself according to different ideologies. 'The states are based on sexuality, religion and ideology. So we've broken apart and the state of discord is at its worst. We enter The Purge in that world.' Reflecting on the series as a whole, DeMonaco explained it was his 'dark indictment of American gun culture' that had inspired The Purge franchise. He said: 'I had this little, strange, dark indictment of American gun culture. I hate guns. 'To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night when everyone was armed and it was legal to use these firearms. To me, there was nothing scarier than that notion.'

Superman's canine sidekick is stealing hearts and inspiring a massive spike in online searches for how to adopt a rescue dog. According to dog training app Woofz, Google searches for the phrase 'adopt a dog near me' jumped by a staggering 513 per cent following the opening weekend of James Gunn's new blockbuster. Searches for 'rescue dog adoption near me' also surged by 163 per cent. The film's four-legged rascal, Krypto, is not only inspired by Gunn's own badly behaved dog Ozu, whom he adopted while writing the movie, but was actually 3D modelled on Ozu's body. Gunn shared a video of his pup barking wildly at Krypto on screen, hilariously reacting to what he doesn't realise is his own digital twin. As Gunn joked, 'Every time he sees himself on screen, he tries to murder himself.' The director also opened up on Late Night with Seth Meyers about Ozu's journey and how it shaped the film. 'Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs and never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. 'He immediately came in and destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture, he even ate my laptop,' Gunn said. 'It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?'- and thus Krypto came into the script and changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.' But while Krypto's mischief and Ozu's heartwarming backstory have clearly inspired many to explore adoption, animal advocates warn that this kind of surge in interest can come with serious downsides. This isn't the first time a film has triggered a wave of pet adoptions. Disney's 1996 live-action remake of 101 Dalmatians, and even re-releases of the original animated classic, sparked a frenzy of fans wanting their own spotted Pongo. But most were unprepared for the breed's needs, resulting in many owners returning to shelters with their tails between their legs. This phenomenon was so widespread it earned its own name, The Dalmatian Syndrome. According to the American Kennel Club, Dalmatian puppy registrations skyrocketed from 8,170 to 42,816 during that time. Disney was forced to add a statement to the end of 102 Dalmatians (the sequel) warning potential owners to research a pet's breed thoroughly before purchasing it as an additional member of their family. Lauren, an Animal Attendant from Animal Welfare League NSW, who you may have spotted on your tele if you're a fan of The Dog House, implores viewers of the new film to 'make sure they know the requirements and amount of time you need to put into raising a puppy.' 'Owning a dog is easily a 10-15 year commitment and not something that should be done on a whim. 'If people think they are ready for a lifelong best friend, they will never regret adopting from a shelter and giving a dog a second chance at life. 'Animals in shelters struggle everyday through no fault of their own. 'But it's also important to do lots of research about the breeds you're intending to adopt to make sure they fit in with your kind of lifestyle and living conditions. 'Shelters and pounds are bursting at the seams because of overbreeding and neglect, mostly from backyard breeders. 'There is a dog to suit any home and lifestyle at a shelter, all people need to do is have an open heart and mind. 'I will always and forever advocate for people to adopt and not shop.' Other dog breeds that have experienced similar popularity spikes due to television or film include: Collies from Lassie, german shepherds from The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, french bulldogs from Modern Family, and jack russells from Frasier. Despite the cautionary tales, the film's heartwarming message seems to have struck a chord, and many are hopeful that more Ozus will find their forever homes. Critics have praised the new instalment, with many calling Krypto a standout star. Screenrant's Molly Freeman posted to Twitter: 'James Gunn's Superman is a fun-filled, action-packed, quintessential summer blockbuster. Also, Krypto is THE BEST dog.' Anthony Whyte from The Movie Blog added, 'Look, I didn't think James Gunn could make me care about Krypto the Superdog or dedicate a whole section to the canine in my Superman 2025 review. I was wrong. 'Krypto isn't just a gag, he's a loyal companion with attitude. Whether he's brawling with alien tech or just chilling in the Fortress of Solitude, Krypto earns his screen time. 'Kids are gonna love him, and adults are gonna leave the theatre googling 'adoptable white dogs'.' Krypto is typically depicted as a white Labrador Retriever in the DC universe, not a Schnauzer/ Terrier mutt, which predictably drew some grumbles from comic buffs. But despite minor changes appearing in the final cut, Krypto's impact on audiences, both on screen and off, has been undeniable.
