James Gunn admits Henry Cavill's Superman firing was 'terrible'
James Gunn has opened up on the 'really unfair' way Henry Cavill was fired from DC and his role as Superman. The Witcher star first appeared as the caped superhero in 2013's Man of Steel before starring as Superman in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He also appeared in Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021 and made a cameo appearance in 2022's Black Adam. Cavill announced in 2022 he would be returning to the role in Gunn's reimagining of the franchise, only to walk back on his comments months later when he was let go by DC. Superman, released earlier this month, stars Pearl actor David Corenswet in the titular role instead. Recalling the incident, Gunn condemned DC Studios for their handling of Cavill's role in the film. 'It's terrible – believe it or not, the day we were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios, the day the deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,' he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. 'I was like, 'What is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman. It was really unfair to him and a total bummer.' 'There was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and they were trying to force their way and it was just never part of the equation.' He went on to say the situation was 'really unfortunate' and he felt for the 'poor guy', but that Cavill took the news like an 'absolute gentleman.' 'He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to coming from you guys.' And I'm like, 'That's a class act',' he continued. Gunn also said he would love to have Cavill in a future DC film, revealing he 'talked to him about it on that day.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Cavill shared the news he would not be returning in an Instagram post, writing: 'I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. 'After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. 'The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.' Gunn's Superman was released on July 11 and currently holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with several glowing reviews. It sees Corenswet's Superman drawn into conflict and the public questioning his actions, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) the opportunity to rid the world of Superman for good. On taking on the role and being propelled from a relative unknown actor to one of the world's most recognisable superheroes, Corenswet opened up to Metro about how he handled the news. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'Oh, I just played solitaire by myself and panicked quietly,' he said on the red carpet at London's Superman Fan Event. 'No, I had the opportunity to tell about six or seven people who I was close to and just kind of relished in this one hour where I had a big secret that nobody else knew about,' he continued. 'It's a rare moment in life, so I tried to be present with it and not be too overwhelmed. 'I got to tell my wife and a couple of family members and then just sat in a chair and waited for the news to break.' Thankfully, once David's not-so-secret identity had been exposed, he could rely on other actors who've slipped into Superman's red Speedos for advice. 'I was lucky enough to exchange letters with Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill, two fellas who have played Superman before me,' he explained. Despite initial backlash over Cavill being replaced, Corenswet appears to have won fans over with his appearance in Gunn's Superman. More Trending 'There aren't enough words to describe just how much I love david corenswet as superman, and just how much of a masterpiece superman (2025) is,' Cntarogothic wrote on X. 'The thing is, sure, Henry Cavill played Superman, but David Corenswet IS Superman. Just, straight up,' Noodles_and_tea added. StacyH90 admitted: 'I was a big fan of Henry Cavill's Superman, and was bummed when it was clear we weren't getting more of him. But hot dayum David Corenswet really holds his own! He IS Superman! The man that could kill us all w/ a twitch of a finger but chooses to do good, saving squirrels too.' Cree reasoned: 'Henry Cavill and David Corenswet are both great Supermen who embody different ideals of the character and liking one more doesn't mean you have to hate the other'. Got a story? Superman's real-life kryptonite: The incredible shrinking cinema business
There's a new Superman movie in theatres this week and business is, as they say, boffo! ' Superman soars to $[US]122 million, third-biggest box office opening weekend of 2025,' raved Variety, referring to ticket sales in the United States and Canada. (In Australia, the film brought in $8.13 million for the weekend.) If you follow box-office news, it's all very normal: big bucks, records broken, blah blah blah. But there is one thing in Hollywood that's rarer than a substantive movie role for a female actor over 40, and that's the disclosure of the actual number of tickets a particular film sells on a particular weekend in a box-office report. That number can lead you into an alternative reality worthy of a David Lynch film. It also explains why going to the movies is so freaking irritating these days. Now, $US122 million ($187 million) might seem like a respectable haul for an opening weekend. However, if you look up the average cost of a movie ticket in the US, which is $US11 and change, and then do a little maths, you get the number of actual tickets that Superman sold: About 11 million. (The number is actually a lot lower; those big-franchise films get a disproportionate share of their incomes from high-priced Imax showings and the like, but that's another story.) Let's flash back to the last big Superman movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in 2016. That opened to $US166 million. Here's where we step through the looking glass. Movie ticket prices back then were $US8.50. More maths, and we get … 20 million tickets sold on the opening weekend. In other words, the Superman franchise has lost about half its fan base. Holy Kryptonite, Batman! Loading Hollywood's biggest secret: despite all the incessant talk about box-office records, ticket sales have been heading south – for decades. Per capita movie-ticket sales were down by a third in the first 20 years of this century. (Australia's admissions have declined similarly, from 92.5 million in 2001 to 55.4 million last year.) The pandemic made things much worse, of course, but the rebound hasn't brought us back. Fewer ticket sales mean someone has to pay, and it's coming out of the pockets of those among us who still go to see movies on the big screen. It feels a lot like being mugged. My wife and I went to the swanky Hoyts in Sydney's Entertainment Quarter to see F1: The Movie the other night. Tickets for the 'Xtreme Screen' showing were about $30 – and as I checked out online I saw that Hoyts had added a $5.10 'booking fee' to the order. (That extra 10 cents was a nice touch.)

Superman box office collection Day 5: James Gunn's DCU film witnesses improvement on Tuesday in India, earns Rs. 2.75 crore
James Gunn's Superman reboot has been well-received by viewers around the world. Released on July 11, this film marked a new start for DC's multiverse franchise. The superhero epic features David Corenswet (Superman), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) in leading roles, and has had a commendable box office collection in both India and globally. Superman marks a new start for DC and Warner Brothers in rivalling the successful Marvel multiverse franchise. After failing to secure success through movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017), and Dwayne Johnson starred Black Adam (2022), Warner Bros. hired James Gunn as the co-CEO of DC Studios (films based on DC Comics) in 2022. Superman India box office improves on Tuesday The DCU film earned Rs 7.25 crore on its first day (Friday), beating the likes of Brad Pitt's F1 and Rajkumar Rao's Maalik. Since then, the DCU film maintained a consistent run at the box office for the next two days, having collected over Rs. 9 crore on both days. However, it faced a major dip on Monday, witnessing a drop of 76% viewership in theatres in India. After a troubling Day 4, the superhero movie saw a slight improvement on Tuesday. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film's day 5 collections across all languages in India stood at Rs 2.75 crore, up from Rs 2.3 crore the previous day. This brings the total Indian collection to Rs 31.05 crore, a decent figure for a Hollywood release in the country amid a struggling box office.. However, despite the good numbers, the film failed to reach its predicted Rs. 40 crore benchmark over the first five days. The release of Jurassic World Rebirth had put up significant competition for James Gunn's movie over the past two days. Day-wise breakdown for Superman Day 1: Rs 7.25 crore Day 2: Rs 9.5 crore Day 3: Rs 9.25 crore Day 4: Rs. 2.25 crore Day 5: Rs. 2.75 crore With that, the total Indian box office collection for Superman comes to Rs. 31.05 crore. Superman Earns Rs 32 Crore In First Weekend, Becomes Top DC Opener In India
Last Updated: By the end of the first weekend, Superman collected Rs. 32 crores across 3037 screens, marking the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in India. The Man of Steel is flying high once again as James Gunn 's Superman broke records, becoming the highest-grossing Superman film of all time in India, alongside being one of the few DC movies in recent years to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic theatre. Superman marks a crucial film for Warner Bros. and DC Studios, as it is the first step in a 10-year plan to reboot the DC Universe. As per Sacnilk reports, Superman had a record-breaking opening weekend in India. On the opening day, James Gunn's film earned an estimated Rs. 7 crores at the domestic box office, and by the end of the first weekend, the film collected Rs. 32 crores (gross) across 3037 screens, marking the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in India. Superman also recorded the third-highest opening for a DC movie in the country after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Batman. James Gunn's Superman is also soaring high at the international box office. As per Variety reports, the film collected $122 million in North America across 4135 theatres and earned $95 million from 79 international markets, marking a global opening of $217 million. Domestically, the film surpassed Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, which collected $116.7 million, to become the biggest-ever launch for a solo Superman film. Among all the releases so far this year, Gunn's Superman is the third film to debut above the $100 million mark, securing a place right behind Warner Bros's own Minecraft Movie and Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, which collected $162.8 million and $146 million, respectively. The film has also outperformed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to become Gunn's second-best domestic opening, trailing behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which collected $146.5 million. Gunn's Superman features David Corenswet as Superman, or Clark Kent, marking a significant departure from Henry Cavill's portrayal of the character. The film features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Alongside them, the film casts a versatile lineup of actors, including Skyler Gisondo, Beck Bennett, Isabel Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Anthony Carrigan, among others. Gunn's direction and the film's star-studded cast contributed to its robust success. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
