‘Sudden spark, shrieks before we could react'
The tragedy unfolded around 2.30 am when an iron rod and tin shed — part of a makeshift structure installed to manage the crowds — reportedly became live due to a short circuit. Thousands of barefoot devotees stood in queue, unaware that the very structure meant to protect them was about to claim lives.
"There was a sudden spark, then shrieks. We watched helplessly as Ramesh and Prashant collapsed. By the time anyone could react, they were gone," said Vivek, a friend who accompanied them.
Ramesh, 28, a humble farmer from Nakta Saheliya village, travelled with a group of 10–15 villagers, including his pregnant wife Lalita Devi.
He was also father to a 14-month-old boy. "He stayed behind to help someone. The rest of us passed through. We turned around when we heard a thud. He lay motionless," recounted Ramu, his eyes brimming with tears.
Lalita, now a widow, and eight month pregnant clutched her 14-month-old baby as she sat numb outside the mortuary.
"He went to seek blessings for our child and never came back. How can a temple — a place of God — take him away?" she sobbed. Ramesh was the sole breadwinner of the family.
The second victim, Prashant Kumar, barely 17, went with his father and a few elders from his village. "He was the light of our home," said Ram Kripal, his father, breaking down. "God should have taken me, not my son. He had his whole life ahead."
Eyewitnesses allege gross negligence in the temple's temporary setup. "There was stagnant water, exposed wires, and metal supports. Everyone was barefoot. It was an accident waiting to happen," said Ankit Dev, a local.

SC hearing next week, Sports City builders start repaying their dues
Noida: Following Noida Authority's notices to developers, some builders involved in the Noida Sports City projects have initiated payments to start clearing their outstanding dues. Notably, a consortium partner in the Sector 150 Sports City project led by Lotus Green Constructions has deposited Rs 80 crore. Officials said that several other consortium partners in the Sector 150 Sports City project have expressed willingness to pay and are likely to follow suit soon. In March, the Authority had issued notices directing developers to settle long-pending dues within a month, in compliance with a high court order issued in Feb. These dues include pending premiums, interest on premiums, penalty interest, lease rent, time extension fees, and the 64.7% additional compensation amount. An official said that 62 notices were issued to various developers across the four Sports City projects in the city. These projects collectively owe Rs 11,000 crore in dues to the Authority. In a set of rulings on Feb 24 this year, the Allahabad High Court directed the Authority to issue notices to all stakeholders, demanding payment of outstanding dues, including interest and penalties. It warned that failure to comply would result in the automatic cancellation of allotments. Exposing what it described as a "dirty nexus" between real estate developers and Noida Authority officials, the high court had ordered investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into three of four Sports City projects, citing massive financial and planning irregularities. A division bench comprising Justices Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Prashant Kumar passed 10 separate judgments detailing violations of land use norms, misappropriation of public land, financial mismanagement, and a systematic failure to construct the promised sports infrastructure. In response, many developers approached the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court's verdict. While the apex court did not stay the CBI and ED investigations, it restrained the agencies from taking any coercive action against the developers for the time being. The next round of hearings is scheduled for the first week of Aug. To oversee compliance, the Authority constituted a committee, led by an additional CEO, to pursue recoveries, enforce court-mandated timelines, and monitor the development of the sports infrastructure. The court's scrutiny has focused on Sports City projects in Sectors 78, 79, and 101, developed by Xanadu Estate, and two major projects in Sector 150, developed by Logix Infra Developers and Lotus Greens Constructions. The fourth project is led by ATS Homes in Sector 152. Developers were found to have violated project norms by prioritising residential and commercial development over the mandated sports facilities, which were supposed to occupy 70% of the allotted land. The Xanadu and Logix projects are both currently under insolvency proceedings, which the court criticised as strategic attempts to evade liabilities. First conceptualised in 2004 and launched between 2010 and 2016, the Sports City projects were planned across 798 acres in Noida, promising world-class sports infrastructure, including three golf courses and an international cricket stadium. However, developers focused instead on residential and commercial construction, failing to deliver the promised sports infrastructure.

The broken wire came in contact with the temple's tin shed, resulting in the incident which also left 29 devotees injured. The temple management committee, led by manager Atul Vinod Giri and priest Atul Goswami, has taken steps to ensure devotees' safety. The tin shed has been stripped of its electrical wiring. The committee members further said that electricity supply to the tin shed outside the temple has been discontinued. In addition, a 500-metre stretch of the temple path is being equipped with safety nets below the 11,000-volt electrical lines. These nets will catch any broken wires, preventing them from falling on the ground and causing harm, they added. Besides, fans installed in the temple corridor's tin shed have been removed to minimise potential electrical hazards. The committee members said that the local police and electricity safety department are conducting investigations and implementing safety measures. A four-member team from the Directorate of Electrical Safety visited the temple to investigate the incident, they added. The team has taken the digital video recorder (DVR) and hard disk of the temple's CCTV system for further analysis. The committee confirmed that nine CCTV cameras are installed within the temple premises and are fully functional. The local police and officials from the electricity safety department are also part of the investigation.

Temple to see safety revamp after tragedy
Lucknow: A day after two electrocution deaths at the Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Haidergarh, Barabanki, which occurred during the early hours of Monday, authorities launched a major safety and accountability drive. The temple management and police, under intense scrutiny, began removing old and faulty wiring and fans installed along the jalabhishek route's tin shed, where the incident occurred. According to officials, the electricity department cut off the power supply to the temple premises on Monday night, citing hazardous, unverified internal wiring. The move came after eyewitnesses and media reported that a network of worn-out electrical wires parallel to the tin shed transferred current to the metal barricade poles, triggering the fatal shock. On Tuesday morning, the temple staff began dismantling the damaged wiring, generator connections, and electrical appliances. Manager Vinod Giri confirmed that the police ordered complete rewiring and inspection by certified experts, and no electricity will be restored until the premises are declared safe.
