Murshidabad violence: Charge sheet filed by Bengal police against 13 in father-son murder case
The murders of Haragobindo Das (74) and his son Chandan Das (40) took place on April 11 during the Dhuliyan-Suti-Shamshergunj communal violence, amid protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in the district.
The riots left at least three people dead and many injured, besides forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
The unrest, which lasted from April 8 to 12, had also caused widespread damage to public and private properties, prompting the Calcutta High Court to order the deployment of Central Armed Forces to restore law and order.
'We have submitted the charge sheet before the district court within 55 days of the crime and have named 13 people in it,' the official said on Friday.
In the aftermath of the violence, the police had arrested over 300 suspected miscreants in connection with over 60 FIRs which were lodged at various police stations in Murshidabad.
According to police reports at the Betbona village where the Das family residence was targeted, the attackers broke down the main door, dragged out Chandan Das and Hargobindo Das, and struck them with an axe in the back. A man reportedly stood guard until they died.
Reports also noted that in some attacks, the rioters cut off the water supply to prevent fires from being extinguished.
Although the details of those named in the charge sheet or the sections slapped on them were not immediately clear, a fact-finding team set up by the high court had named local Trinamool Congress leader Mehboob Alam, former chairman of the Dhuliyan Municipality, to have 'directed' the attack.
The team, while submitting its report before the high court on May 21, had also stated 'inactivity and absence' of the state police, and added that the men in uniform did not respond to calls from the locals during the violence.
The committee documented that "as many as 113 houses were badly affected in the village of Betbona", many of which were set on fire.

Kolkata: Bengal BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya has directed its affiliated organisations to suggest strategies to overcome or minimise the booth-wise vote margin deficit with Trinamool Congress in the crucial Assembly elections scheduled next year. According to the BJP state committee, Bhattacharya is of the view that the role of the affiliated organisations will be equally crucial to that of the state party unit in overcoming or minimising the booth-wise vote margin deficit with Trinamool Congress. "Precisely that is why he had meetings with the representatives of the affiliated organisations on Friday evening. Percentage-wise, the BJP secured 40.7 per cent as against Trinamool Congress's figure of 43.3 per cent. On the other hand, in 2024, the Congress-Left Front alliance secured 62,35,669 popular votes. "As per a rough internal calculation, considering that Muslim votes went to Trinamool Congress' kitty in 2024, the majority of 62 lakh votes that went in favour of the Congress-Left Front alliance were Hindu votes or votes from non-Muslim other religions. Now, if we can turn around and consolidate a large portion of these Hindu votes in our favour in 2026, the vote margin deficit of around 42 lakhs could be minimised to a great extent," said the state committee member. At the same time, efforts will be made to consolidate Hindu votes from non-Muslim other religions, which went to Trinamool Congress till the 2024 polls, into the BJP's fold, he said. Bhattacharya also admitted that the vote consolidation process, as aimed by the BJP, will be comparatively easier in the metro and urban pockets than in the rural belts.

Successive govts. failed to protect green cover, says Mallikarjun Kharge
Expressing displeasure over declining forest cover in India, the All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun M. Kharge said that the successive State governments had failed to protect the forest area by not effectively enforcing forest preservation laws. He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the 'Hasiru Patha' and 'Hasiru Hejje-Kalaburagi' programmes under Vanamahotsava-2025 jointly organised by Departments of Forest, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Urban Development and the district administration here on Saturday. Though the country has lost its 20 lakh hectares of forest cover in the last ten years, the State governments are nonchalant in implementing the laws to protect the forest land, Mr. Kharge alleged. 'Our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi introduced the Forest Conservation Act 1980, and further the Forest Rights Act was introduced during Man Mohan Singh's tenure, and recently the Modi-led government enacted the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act, 2023, but no States in the country are fully complying with forest related laws. If this situation continues, the environment degradation can indeed worsen air quality and generate more health hazards in the coming days,' Mr. Kharge expressed. Expressing concern over the increasing deaths due to cardiac arrest, especially among youngsters' the leader said that clean air, water and a healthy environment are crucial for good health. Currently, India's forest and tree cover is 25.17 % of the country's geographical area, while Karnataka's forest cover is at 21.21 % of its total geographical area. At least 33% of forest cover is necessary to ensure adequate oxygen supply and water availability and to promote environmental health. Stressing on the need to increase forest cover to combat climate change and global warming, Mr. Kharge suggested the State government develop forests near the backwaters of the reservoirs and dams. The leader appealed to the public to join their hands with the government in expanding green cover by planting saplings at their homes, schools, and on the borders of agricultural fields. Just planting saplings is not a solution, ensuring survival of the planted trees is equally important, he said. The State government aims to plant three crore saplings this year, of which even if 2.5 crore of saplings survive, it will be highly beneficial, Mr. Kharge expressed. Mr. Kharge also distributed saplings to the students on the occasion. Minister for Forest and Environment Eshwar B. Khandre and Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge; MP, legislators, senior officials from the Forest Department, RDPR and Urban Development departments were present.

Bangladeshi national held near India-Nepal border
Motihari: A Bangladeshi national, Syed Iqbal Ahmed (43), who was trying to illegally enter into India through Raxaul integrated checkpost (ICP) on India-Nepal border, was arrested on Friday near Maitri bridge by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). On Saturday, Ahmed was produced before the SDJM, Raxaul, and remanded to jail custody under Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Acting commandant of 47 battalion of SSB, Sanjay Rawat, said the SSB jawan posted at Maitri bridge found that the Bangladeshi national did not have a valid visa for India. He had a Bangladesh passport and visa for Nepal only. He had come to Kathmandu from Dhaka by air last week. During search, 50 US dollars, Bangladeshi and Nepal currencies were recovered from his possession. During investigation, it was revealed that he had plans to enter different cities of the country after entering through Nepal. "This activity is being considered extremely serious and suspicious from the point of view of national security," Rawat said. The Immigration sources said from April 26 to July 4, four Chinese, one each US, Canadian, South Korean, Iraq and Bangladeshi nationals had attempted to enter into India without valid documents through Raxaul. However, they were arrested and jailed. After 'Operation Sindoor' there is a high alert in the border area and a temporary checkpost has recently been set up by the SSB at the Maitri bridge before the ICP. According to intelligence department sources, information has been received about the arrival of seven Pakistani and Bangladeshi associated with the Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, in Nepal and all these suspects have been active near the India-Nepal border since the first week of June 2025.
