Two teenage boys have been arrested in connection with rock-throwing incidents last fall, the Ontario Provincial Police says.
Over a two-month stretch between September and November, the OPP said there were multiple instances in which rocks were reportedly thrown deliberately at moving vehicles.
From Sept. 20 to Nov. 12 alone, the OPP said its Aurora detachment had received 11 reports of rocks intentionally thrown at vehicles travelling along Highway 48.
Two people suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of one instance, police said in a news release, while nobody was injured in the other incident.
Two 18-year-old boys, one from Markham and the other from Richmond Hill, were arrested on Wednesday, police said in a release.
The pair have been charged with aggravated assault, mischief endangering life and mischief damage to property.
Police are not identifying either person as they were both youths at the time of the incidents.
They are expected to appear in court in Richmond Hill at a later date.
Earlier this year, in an unconnected case, two teen boys were also arrested and charged in connection with rocks being thrown at vehicles in the Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville areas. One person sustained minor injuries.
In that case, York Regional Police said in January it had charged an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old with mischief under $5,000.

Toronto police identify man killed in apparent murder-suicide in Scarborough

Toronto police have identified a 62-year-old man killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Scarborough. David Foote, 62, of Toronto, was the victim of homicide, police said in a news release on Friday. His body was found along with that of a 67-year-old man in a house near Birchmount Road and Chelwood Drive, south of Eglinton Avenue E., on Wednesday. Police said in the release that the 67-year-old man is now believed to be responsible for killing Foote. According to police, officers were called to the home for a well-being check at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Police said concerned family members called police to ask them to check on the men, both of whom lived in the home. When officers arrived, they found the two men with "obvious signs of trauma." Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Foote is the city's 18th homicide victim of the year.

Man accused of running Canada's largest grandparent scam network arrested in Quebec

Gareth West, the alleged leader of a network of grandparent scammers accused of defrauding $30 million from American seniors, has been arrested. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested him in Quebec on Friday on behalf of American investigators who have charged him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit to money laundering, an RCMP spokesperson confirmed to CBC. Last month, CBC published a story detailing West's alleged criminal activity. Investigators allege he ran a lucrative and complex grandparent scam network that employed dozens of people out of multiple Montreal-area call centres. Meanwhile, West presented himself as a wealthy real estate developer. Read that article here: Last year, police raided locations across the Montreal area where West's alleged employees were found making scam calls to elderly victims in Virginia, according to information in an indictment filed in U.S. court. Then, in early March, RCMP officers arrested 23 people accused of participating in the scam. But West eluded them for several months. A source with knowledge of the situation who requested to remain confidential said West had been staying at a house in Burlington, Ont., in early March. But, when police went to that house, West wasn't there because it was being renovated. He was staying in a nearby rental home, the source said, but when officers arrived there, he was gone. WATCH | CBC's investigation into Gareth West: One other alleged member of the scam network, Jimmy Ylimaki, remains on the run. If extradited to the U.S. and convicted, West could face up to 40 years in prison. West will appear in Quebec Superior Court on Saturday.
