TV gardener's 'doon the watter' promise to his family
'I can still remember it now, that smell of seaweed and the sound of the paddles, it was so much a part of my childhood.'
Filming commitments mean that Domoney may have to miss this summer's sailing schedule, but he will be in Scotland later this year when he cuts the ribbon on the National Gardening & Outdoor Living Show, which takes place at the Royal Highland Centre Edinburgh on July 26 and 27.
The show is a brand new event and it will bring together top nurseries selling plants suitable for Scottish gardens as well as a traditional flower show with cut flowers, crafts and vegetables, alongside bonsai displays and koi carp exhibits and a Potting Shed Stage, where Domoney will be sharing his knowledge of growing and gardening.
That knowledge built on long experience, which began when, as a Scout, he turned his 'Bob-A-Job' efforts, cutting grass for his neighbours, into a pocket-money business before, at the age of 16, taking up a three-year-apprenticeship with a leading garden centre chain. It was a route that offered training, education and practical, hands-on experience and which provided the foundation for a stellar career that has involved senior positions with DIY multiples and the founding of his own, hugely successful garden design and consultation business.

Domoney has designed gardens for high profile celebrities and commercial clients, as well as winning 34 Royal Horticultural Society medals including a clutch of Chelsea golds. He has founded both the Community Street, community and schools gardening campaign, and the Young Gardeners of the Year competition, received royal accolades and been admitted as a 'Fellow' to a long list of eminent organisations, including the Linnean Society, the world's oldest organisation dedicated to botany.
He is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable of all TV gardeners, yet when broadcasting live from the greenhouse of his home in Warwickshire, demonstrating to viewers of This Morning how to squeeze the maximum amount of colour out of their window boxes, or wielding a spade in a suburban patch on Love Your Garden, he has a down-to-earth, approachable style that makes him sound more like the capable bloke at the local allotments rather than the bona fide member of gardening royalty that he actually is.

'I've always loved talking to people about plants,' he says.
'I did it when I worked for the garden centre, giving advice to customers, then from that I moved to making video clips when I was working for one of the big chains and from that came the opportunity to work on TV.'
That work has included making more than 120 gardens alongside Alan Titchmarsh and the Love Your Garden team as well as a series of instant transformations carried out live on daytime TV.
'The first thing that the participants would know about it was when I rang the doorbell at ten past ten in the morning and I had an hour and 50 minutes to complete the job.'
Domoney keeps finding new ways to express the passion that took him into the industry at a young age and most recently that has taken the form of a new book, 'Plants with Superpowers' that took two years of research to complete.
'Did you know that you can charge your mobile phone using a potato or that walnuts don't just look like brains, they can help our grey matter to function better?'
From the incredible longevity of the Ginkgo biloba tree, which has been around for 250 million years, or the Gas plant, which can spontaneously combust, Domoney says he was captivated by the stories that he uncovered.
He'll be sharing some of these on stage at the National Gardening & Outdoor Living Show, along with giving advice on how to make the most of any garden. And if you want to know in advance the secrets of creating your dream garden, then here are David Domoney's top ten tips for transforming your outdoor space:
1. The garden is your own, personal environment so make it work for you.
2. Create something that is manageable. For instance, if you have lots of plants in pots then you are going to be doing a lot of watering.
3. Lawns are calming, they soften the garden and a well kept lawn will produce more oxygen than a patch of rainforest of the same size.
4. Make it a place that appeals to all the senses. Include plants with different textures and those like mint and rosemary which smell wonderful when you touch them. Try too to include the sound of running water.
5. Think of your garden as somewhere that can support your health so aim to grow currants, blueberries, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables.
6. If you only have room for one tree, make it an apple. It will give you flowers, foliage and fruit and because the trees come in different sizes there's one for every garden.
7. Fill your home with houseplants, they bring the outdoors inside. Your window sills are the perfect environment for growing a whole range of beautiful plants.
8. Take care of the wildlife in your garden. Feed the birds and grow plants that are beneficial to insects.
9. The secret of any great garden lies in the soil, it is teeming with life and you can boost it with home made compost, so don't get rid of garden waste or vegetable scraps, compost them instead.
10. Aim to have something in flower in every month of the year. It won't just make your garden look better but it will also help insects to flourish.

Florent Malouda praises Wrexham's superb success story
That is the view of Chelsea and France legend Florent Malouda who is enjoying watching the story unfolding at The Racecourse where Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are co-owners. Phil Parkinson's side finished runners-up in League One last season, securing an historic third successive promotion. It promises to be much tougher in the second tier next term - Wrexham last played at that level 43 years ago - but Malouda says the north Wales club can take heart from how Brentford managed to reach the top-flight where they have spent the last four campaigns and finished 10th in 2024-25. Speaking on behalf of bet365 and their launch of the free-to-play Club World Championship Tournament Predictor game, Malouda said: "It's a wonderful success story, especially when you consider people coming from Hollywood, getting involved in football, and being so successful so quickly. There is something happening there. "I hope the story continues and that they get promoted to the Premier League. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS Wrexham's Championship rivals Birmingham City complete sixth new signing Ben Foster and Ben Tozer set to appear at Soccer Camps on Wrexham Down Under Tour "Of course, it's more challenging now to step up from Championship to Premier League, but it has been done in the past. "Look at teams like Brentford, they got promoted and have managed to stay in the Premier League. "I hope that happens for Wrexham, they have a glamourised story around the club and I hope they make a movie one day. They'll shoot a movie based on the true story of Wrexham."

His standout characters include Jeor Mormont in the HBO series Game of Thrones, Angus MacLeod in Highlander and Campbell in Braveheart, which he has called ' one of the last real epic movies'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But more recently, he has turned his love of blended whisky into his own bottling, Storyman, in collaboration with borders distillery Annandale. The name was chosen given how much of a wonderful raconteur Mr Cosmo is, and no more so when talking about his acting roles, as well as Scottish food and drink. In one of his compelling tales, Mr Cosmo told us, on the most recent episode of Scran , of his 'secret' private jet flight from the south of England to Scotland to attend the Braveheart premiere, which took place at Stirling Castle in 1995. Mr Cosmo was not going to go to the premiere as he had other filming commitments. But at the last minute, the actor decided to book a private jet and fly to the event, returning very early the next morning. This night flight culminated in the actor and his wife transporting a human heart. Annandale distillery Speaking of the night, Mr Cosmo said: 'We hired a plane and flew up. We landed, a car picked us up, we went to the premiere and the after party in Stirling Castle. It was unbelievable. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'They had fire eaters and jugglers and all sorts of medieval stuff. It was the most wonderful party. Eventually at three o'clock in the morning, we needed to get back because that same plane was waiting to take off. 'I said goodbye to everyone and I got in the car and we're driving to the airport and the driver had one of these old brick phones, which rang. He says, 'oh, it's for you'. I thought 'oh Jesus what's happened', and it's the police. They said: 'Do you have a plane leaving for London?' I said, 'yeah, we are about 20 minutes away from the airport'. 'They said 'would you mind taking a human heart on the plane for a transplant?' Because in those days, it was very, very time critical. I said, 'no, it's OK'. They said 'just keep on the motorway'. Then within ten minutes this ambulance pulled in front of us and then two motorcycle cops came down [with the heart], so we just got on the plane with it in a big yellow box. 'Annie and I put it between us and we flew down, landed at the airport, and an ambulance and police [were] there, and it went flying off somewhere. I thought it was fate. We really wanted to go [to the premiere] and somebody got a heart that night.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Storyman whisky from Annandale distillery | Annandale distillery While early morning flights of mercy may be a thing of the past, Mr Cosmo is still very passionate about cooking, whisky and his love of Scotch pies. Luckily, there's a good family bakery near Annandale that keeps Mr Cosmo going with these traditional Scottish savouries. ' I'm an aficionado of Scotch pies,' he said. 'I travel to many places to eat them. In fact, there's one wee place in Annan, near the distillery. It's one of those family bakeries and they do all the old traditional things like potato scones, cakes and Scotch pies. So I go to the distillery, have a few drams, then collect the pies from the bakery and have someone drive me home.' The drams he is referring to will be of his own Blend, Storyman, which launched in 2023. The blend was specially created for the Game of Thrones actor by Keith Law, Annandale's master blender, and owner, Professor David Thomson. The blend features a carefully chosen selection of their award-winning single cask, single malt whiskies. These include various vintages and spirit types from a range of Fresh and Refill Ex-Bourbon, and Ex-Burgundy STR casks. The whisky came about after Mr Cosmo met Prof Thomson at the distillery after filming Outlaw King. Looking for something personal to gift to people at the end of a job, Mr Cosmo asked Annandale if they wouldd bottle something special for him, and the team decided to go one better - create his own whisky. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Annandale distillery Mr Cosmo said he wanted a blend as this was his favourite kind of whisky. He said: 'There's a huge number of aficionados who are single malt people, but I would never pretend to be an expert in whisky. 'If I like a whisky, I like a whisky, that's it. I always preferred a blend to a single malt, really. I was brought up in Clydebank, although I moved to London when I was quite young. But being Scottish, it was the thing everyone drank. 'I remember working in a pub in Clydebank. The ship breakers was just down the road and before we opened at five o'clock, about half past four, we would just start pouring halves [of whisky] and half pints of beer - dozens and dozens of them - because nobody ever asked for anything else.' Speaking of creating the whisky with Mr Law, who Cosmo called 'astonishing', he said: 'Keith is one of these people, he's got just such a knowledge of whisky. It's astonishing, he has a wonderful nose. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'There was one day when there were six samples of whisky , then I had to decide which one was going to be the one to bottle. Then we started the first run of it and it has been a fantastic experience just seeing that first bottle there.' Mr Law said: 'The blending process took a great deal of time to get right. It was a process that involved speaking with James, having in-depth conversations to identify the types of whisky James likes to enjoy. What we created is a smooth and complex whisky, with notes of vanilla, honey, citrus and smoke. What we wanted to do is capture the essence of James's whisky memories and make it tangible and that's what we have done with Storyman.'

Lewis Capaldi opening up about Tourette's therapy will help others seek help
Lewis Capaldi's decision to be open about using therapy to help him cope with anxiety and Tourette syndrome must be applauded. His honesty is refreshing, having admitted that he initially lied to his therapist before finally revealing his true feelings. Only then could he begin the road to recovery. His reluctance to fully commit to getting the help he needed is a lesson for us all and one which many of us can empathise with. No doubt nervous at first, Lewis found out the hard way that it wasn't until he finally opened up and told his therapist the truth about his feelings that he was able to get a handle on his anxiety. Now he is speaking out about his experience and, in doing so, he is setting an example that there is no longer, and nor should there be, a stigma around mental health issues or in finding tools to deal with them. We should all feel comfortable asking for professional help and we should do our best to allow people to express that need should it arise. It could be a member of your own family, a close friend, a colleague or a neighbour. For Lewis, therapy has meant that, two years after quitting the music business, he has made a successful return to the thing he loves best – singing and writing songs. He's No1 in the charts but he doesn't pretend that therapy is a quick fix, or even a cure all. But, by revealing his true emotional state, Lewis may have helped others to seek the help they need. Liquid gold for air travellers Edinburgh Airport has become the first in Scotland to lift the 100ml liquid rule for hand luggage. Travellers will now be able to take through containers of up to two litres and not have to put up with annoying wee plastic bags and bottles. The rule has been in place since 2006 and has been a nuisance we've all put up with since. The key to the old rules being ditched is the purchase of eight new scanners as part of a £24million security overhaul. Edinburgh is the first but it is hoped the other main Scottish airports will follow suit. Air travel safety cannot be compromised and is paramount. But, when they can, airports should strive to make the life easier for passengers. The next thing bosses might want to look at is the rip-off fees people are charged just for dropping someone off at the airport.
