Before you make your next bologna sandwich or serve bologna on any cold cut platters this 4th of July, you need to know about the latest nationwide recall. Because, according to an announcement by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), thousands of pounds of bologna are being recalled.
The recall, issued on June 27, affects a variety of ready-to-eat bologna products. Which means, it's time to check your fridge ASAP.
Here's what you should know to ensure you don't have any recalled products in your refrigerator.

The near 150,000 pounds of Gaiser's European Style Provisions Inc. ready-to-eat bologna are being recalled because of a misbranding mistake. FSIS explains that the recalled products 'contain meat or poultry source materials that are not declared on the product labels.'
Originally, the misbranding issue was discovered after a complaint was issued through the Office of Inspector General's hotline. That complaint resulted in an investigation by FSIS, and found that the following products had undeclared source materials on the label:
Vacuum-packed packages of 'FAMILY TREE BOLOGNA VEAL' containing undeclared pork
Plastic-wrapped packages of 'BABUSHKA'S RECIPE CHICKEN BOLOGNA' containing undeclared pork
Plastic-wrapped packages of 'FANCY BOLOGNA' labeled with pork as an ingredient but containing undeclared beef and chicken
Vacuum-packed packages of 'GAISERS RUSSIAN BRAND DOKTORSKAYA BOLOGNA' containing undeclared beef
Plastic-wrapped packages of 'GAISERS BOLOGNA VEAL' containing undeclared chicken and pork
Plastic-wrapped packages of 'GAISERS TURKEY BOLOGNA' containing undeclared chicken and pork
Plastic-wrapped packages of 'CHICKEN BOLOGNA KYPOYKA PABA' containing undeclared pork
Consumers would have purchased any of these affected products at wholesale and retail locations across the country anytime between March 20 to June 20 of this year.Additionally, inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels, shoppers can check if a bare establishment number of 'EST.5385' is present. FSIS says that some of the affected products would have been wrapped and label in-store.
Fortunately, FSIS doesn't predict that consumers will have any adverse health effects from this recall. So far, no adverse reactions linked to the products have been reported either.
But, caution is still your best bet. Especially since the agency suspects the products may still be in the fridges and freezers of customers.
