Highway Code: Drivers risk £1,000 fine for sun visor mistake

With the sun's glare at its peak, drivers are using their sun visors more than ever at the moment, but a little-known Highway Code rule means that you could be risking a £1,000 fine.
With bright summer sunlight making visors essential, many drivers also use them to hold sunglasses, toll receipts, face masks, festival passes, or parking stubs.
However, these items could be deemed an obstruction if they block the driver's view of the road ahead.
Cherie Carter, director at Indigo Car Hire, explained: 'Most people wouldn't think twice about clipping a receipt or sunglasses case to their visor, but anything that affects your field of vision could lead to enforcement action.
'We see countless hire cars returned with cluttered visors, which is not only a safety risk, but could invalidate insurance in the event of a crash.'
Under Highway Code Rule 94, drivers are legally required to ensure their vehicle is safe to drive, including having an unobstructed view.
If police believe an obstruction contributed to dangerous or careless driving, fines can reach £1,000, plus points or driving bans in severe cases.
Cherie added: 'Our advice is simple; keep your visor clear. Store passes or receipts in your glove box or wallet instead. It's a small change that can keep you, and everyone else, safer on the roads this summer.

'It's a good habit to do a quick sweep of your car interior before every journey. Remove anything hanging from your mirror or visor, check your windows are clean inside and out, and adjust your seat for maximum visibility.
'These small checks only take a minute but can significantly reduce your risk of fines or accidents.'
Drivers risk £50 fine over roundabout mistake
For new drivers, and some experienced ones, mastering roundabouts can be tricky, and experts are warning that millions of us are still making a simple mistake that is putting us at risk of a fine.
One in six drivers believe roundabouts make their journeys more stressful, according to a study from Compare the Market.

And experts at the insurance firm warn that almost six million of us are not following roundabout rules correctly, putting them in danger of getting a £50 fine.
Compare the Market's study found some drivers failed to give way to the right at roundabout junctions.
Rule 185 of the Highway Code states: 'Always give priority to the traffic coming from the right, unless you have been directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights.'
Furthermore, over half of UK licence holders (55%) could be at risk of the same fine due to driving over mini-roundabouts. Nearly half (48%) admit to driving over a raised roundabout and almost two-thirds (62%) to driving over a flat one.
Rules 188 to 190 of the Highway Code reveal that when it comes to mini-roundabouts the regulations are no different from regular roundabouts - 'It is important to remember that all vehicles must pass round the central markings, unless they are too large to do so. You will find that when driving around mini-roundabouts there is less room to manoeuvre and less time to signal, so take extra care.'

Luke Littler hits the wire after failing driving theory test for fourth time

World champion Luke Littler may be the master of the oche, but he is yet to master the Highway Code after failing his driving theory test for a fourth time. The 18-year-old has driven darts to a new level following his emergence on to the world scene 18 months ago, but he will not be getting behind the wheel any time soon after suffering more misery in the exam room. Littler revealed he had failed his theory test – a requirement before anyone can take a practical exam – for a fourth time on Wednesday. View this post on Instagram A post shared by McLaren (@mclaren) He scored 45 out of 50 on the multiple choice section, which was enough to pass, but only scored 41 out of 75 on the hazard perception, two short of the required mark. He posted a picture of his exam report on his Instagram story, with the caption '4th time and counting' accompanied by a 'green feeling unwell' emoji. Littler, who was a World Championship finalist before he was even old enough to take driving lessons, will have to quickly put his disappointment behind him as he prepares for the World Matchplay, which starts in Blackpool this weekend. Littler, chasing the title for the first time, takes on Ryan Searle in the first round on Sunday.

Brit drivers warned of deadly mistake millions face over summer holidays – and how to avoid getting caught out

As Brits hit the roads for their holidays this summer, motorists have been urged to take regular stops on their long journeys. National Highways issued the advice and warned that driver tiredness can lead to "dangerous mistakes". Drivers have been urged by the agency to plan breaks that go "beyond quick pit stops". They suggest activities such as exploring a nearby tourist attraction or beauty spot to ensure drivers are alert before they get back behind the wheel. To encourage drivers, National Highways is producing videos that spotlight potential places to visit near major roads. It's in an effort to help drivers discover new places and take a meaningful break without straying too far from their route. For example, drivers travelling on the M1 can visit Bolsover Castle, Hardwick Hall and Wrest Park on their journey. Or if you find yourself on the M5, you can pay a visit to Cheltenham's Pittville Park with its lakeside walks. An average of 262 people are killed or seriously injured between June and August each year on England's motorways and major A-roads where fatigue is a contributory factor. That's 59 per cent more than the whole of the remaining nine months of the year. Dramatic moment idiot driver speeds off road, spins out of control and crashes into police car The data covers the period from 2016 to 2022, excluding figures for 2020 and 2021 as the coronavirus pandemic affected travel patterns. A National Highways survey of 1,727 adults in England indicated just 39% would take a break because of driver tiredness. Some 29% said they did not factor in rest stops on their last long journey. Regional differences are clear too with drivers in the North East, North West and South West far more likely to take rest stops on long journeys. Whereas those in the East Midlands recorded the lowest rates nationally. Sheena Hague, director of road safety at National Highways, said: "We all want to reach our destination quickly, especially when the excitement of a holiday awaits, but fatigue behind the wheel can be deadly. "It's not just about falling asleep, tiredness slows your reactions, clouds your judgment and can lead to dangerous mistakes." She added: "That's why we're encouraging drivers to follow our advice by planning ahead, taking regular breaks and staying refreshed. "This will help keep themselves and other road users safe while enjoying the rich heritage and natural beauty our country has to offer." Beth Stone, Head of Visitor Experience at English Heritage advised drivers to "stretch those legs and enjoy a well-deserved tea and a slice of cake" at its sites across the country.
