Yahoo3 days ago
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Roughly 15,000 absentee ballots have not been returned, with just one week left until the primary election on Aug. 5.
City officials are urging voters to use one of the 13 official Lansing drop boxes to return completed ballots.
This year's primary will narrow down the list of candidates for Mayor, City Council At Large, and 4th Ward City Council, and vote on a proposal to renew the City Park Millage.
'Voters can choose to vote at home, vote early, or vote Election Day; with so many convenientoptions, I hope this leads to a higher turnout than in similar past elections,' said Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope in a release sent to 6 News.
The REO Elections Office will be open for those who may vote early or drop off completed ballots at these times:
Wednesday, July 30 – 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Saturday, August 2 – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Sunday, August 3 – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Drop boxes are monitored 24/7 and will remain open until Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 8 p.m.

Following last year's successful debut, Staunton Citizen University returns this fall

Following last year's successful debut, the City of Staunton announced that Staunton Citizen University (SCU) is back for its second consecutive year, offering residents a behind-the-scenes look at how their local government operates. Starting Sept. 9, the city will host the 10-week interactive course designed to give participants streamlined but comprehensive exposure to key city departments and several regional agencies. Beginning at 8 a.m. Aug. 4, the city will start accepting online applications for SCU. A maximum of 25 participants will be accepted into the program, with Staunton residents receiving preference. Based on last year's overwhelming response, interested residents are encouraged to apply early, as spots are expected to fill quickly, the city said. For assistance with the online application, call the City Manager's office: 540-332-3812. "Last year's return of Citizen University exceeded our expectations in every way," said City Manager Leslie Beauregard. "The enthusiasm and engagement from participants was incredible, and we're excited to build on that success. This program creates valuable two-way dialogue. DOJ Supports Congressman's Supreme Court Challenge to Late Counting of Ballots

The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a friend-of-the-court brief on July 29 in support of a GOP congressman's challenge to an Illinois law that allows ballots received 14 days after Election Day to be counted. Eighteen states, including Illinois, accept mailed ballots received after Election Day if they bear a postmark from or before Election Day, according to a National Conference of State Legislatures report. The District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands also follow the same rule.
